1st Annual Pooches & Paddleboards Race | Camden Windjammer Weekend
Oakley and I competed in the 1st Annual Pooches & Paddleboards Race in Camden Harbor (Maine) as part of Windjammer Weekend. We got to paddle with some cool dogs and check out the schooners up close. The crowd was fantastic! The race was well organized by Camden Parks & Recreation and Maine Sport Outfitters. Glad we went!

Catarafting the Dead: High flow causes problems

The flow on a recent Penobscot Paddle & Chowder Society club trip on the Dead River was supposed to be 2,400 cfs, but rain from inflowing streams doubled this and made the conditions challenging for some boaters.

How was the camera filming after the guy fell out of the boat ? Shouldn’t you have a painter line to hold onto the back of the canoe after you fall out ? I have never done rapids as heavy as that, I’ve thought about it but I do alot of class 2 with a little class 3 here and there.
@@larzchannel5975 The camera was mounted on the bow of the canoe and just kept filming. Cool, huh? I did have a painter line but I had it tucked away at the stern. There are two schools of thought on this. I suppose it might have been helpful for holding onto the canoe. But it can also be a deadly hazard if you get tangled in the line. In this case, I mostly wanted to get away from the boat because it had become a weapon while bouncing up and down beside me. You can see me push it away early in the swim. I knew my teammates had me covered this time so I just focused on swimming.
@@River_Metimbers that’s some heavy rapids. I have a mad river canoe with a lot of rocker but the wooden frame needs repair now and I never got the serious air bags. I had thought of doing the dead river before but I never got to that point. I am 62 years old, I’ve run quite a few class 3 sections but nothing like the dead river
@@larzchannel5975 These are definitely big and long rapids for a canoe if you aren’t experienced. But with a little practice and the right boat you can do it. Our club, the Penobscot Paddle and Chowder Society, does stuff like this almost every weekend. The club has people of all ages - I’ve done trips with people ranging in age from 10 to 84. I got a lot of practice in the spring races, some of which are easier class 1-2 with an occasional class 3 drop. (I.e. Passagassawakeag, St. George, Sandy, Meduxnekeag). Check out my Carrabassett videos - also another favorite river where you can dodge rocks without huge consequences.
@@River_Metimbers I ran the Carrabassett from maybe it was the stratton trailhead where there's a bridge - I am not sure. It had a couple of narrow tricky sections. I've paddled under the Bridge at the Sandy river in New Sharon .. This is a video I have from the Sandy river ruclips.net/video/4Za2mPyldKI/видео.html The rivers I like to paddle are the East Branch, Sebois, and Saint Croix .. Do you find running the dead river to be stressful or nerve racking ? I stopped running a few short class 4 sections many years ago because I found it a bit stressful but I was doing it alone and I didn't have a good setup at the time I do have a dagger crossfire kayak. I tried to learn the eskimo roll from youtube but I couldn't get it. Maybe it's not the best kayak for that but I would need some help with that, someone needs to teach me. I could maybe sit in a kayak for 2 hours max. I don't like sitting on my but. I prefer the canoe so I hardly ever use my kayak
@@larzchannel5975 I really like the Seboeis, although it seems like most people prefer the East Branch. St. Croix is great, too. Have you tried soloing your canoe? I find it MUCH easier… better floatation:weight ratio and less communication to worry about. I guess I do find whitewater to be a little stressful, but really it’s a way to completely focus your mind on one task and that can also serve to reduce stress.
Too funny. Damn cat, think he's a big cat going for the neck of an antelope. I guess cats doing cat things.

Hitting the carrabassett from town office to Kingfield Saturday 8/10 around 10
@@541EFD Have a great run. Let me know how it was. I’m headed to the Dead again this morning!
GREAT video! The poor little boat still filming you in the water, trying to help you! What happened to eject you so cleanly: got wedged between 2 rocks? I didn’t hear any clunk.
@@unclejohnthezef I still don’t know exactly what happened. There were two rocks, I didn’t see either one, and I think I hit at an angle that just quickly threw me off balance. I was surprised to be sitting on the rock and thought for a second I could hop back in my boat. By the end of that second we were on our way downriver.
We did it in mid-April at about 1,500-1,700 cfs. It was just under 7 miles long.
How long or a run is this and what time of years is the best

Nice video! That is one surefooted (pawed) dog! Looks like you had a great time. Question, what model is the Pyranha kayak? I have a Pyranha Ion but the one in the video looks longer. Peace, MD
@@Mainedwella33 It’s a Pyranha Fusion II crossover. My wife isn’t into big whitewater but this can hold its own up to class 3 and it has a skeg that can be dropped for flatter sections. Decent storage space, too. Fits the purpose!

You get better and better at this every race! Excellent! What is the black plastic thing in front of your knees? (I liked when Ben thought he was going to pass you, then he decided to just follow your trail... )
