Welcome to Blooming Wildwood Homestead! In May of 2021, I moved my urban homestead to the country. Lot's of things are happening here in the Pacific Northwest. Living on the homestead, there is never a dull moment. We are seed starting, gardening, and seed saving. The orchard needs tending and training. After all the good food is harvested, I am showing you how I preserve food so that I have it for the winter. Additionally, I am working on using sourdough starter in my baked goods and so much more. Enjoy the journey as I share with you some of the things I am doing and learning around the homestead!

5 Considerations BEFORE Starting A Homestead in 2023
Never put anything cooked into compost. You can add three spoons of rice to thicken instead of flour
I’m sure the recipe is great, but you absolutely should never use dairy products in anything you can pressure or hot water bath because it can cause botulism and I would hate to see you get your family sick or anyone who follows your recipe please use olive oil for salting
Where’s your recipe????
I have tried this method a number of times with little potato production. What's the secret to success?
It could possibly have to do with the variety of potato used. Indeterminate potatoes will continue to grow new potatoes as they are hilled or mounded. That would work well with the trash can method as you would be adding dirt as the plants continue to grow, thereby encouraging new potatoes to form up the plant. Determinate varieties will grow in a single layer and hilling would not be necessary with those varieties. It might be something to at least consider if you have not previously had success with this method and would like to try again.
I'm sure your method has served you well over the years; however, you may want to consider reading the Ball Blue Book for canning. Using flour (and butter) changes the Ph levels in food hence the reason for adding citric acid or concentrated lemon juice to each jar to prevent bacteria growth... especially when water bathing. Also, per guidelines, you should water bath pint jars at 35 min. I'm not trying to offend, just offering USDA guidelines.
Hello FOOD SAFETY!! TY
Thank you for posting this. The thing about these canning videos is there might be new people watching and think it’s OK to use these dangerous methods
Hey question! Does all tomato soup need to be waterbathed? I made tomato soup the other day. Brought the liquid to a boil, heated the jars, and added to hot liquid to the hot jars. Added a 1/2 teaspoon of citric acid to a 2 quart jar .. will I need to waterbath these also? Or are they shelf stable?
You still need to water bath, or pressure can to make them shelf stable.
How much sugar?
I have never had tomato soup. I’m excited for this.
I don't like seeds in my jams... At what point do you put the crushed berries through a sieve before completing?
Where is the printed recipe of this?
There is a transcript of this video included. Tap on the text under the video at the top of this page.
Make more plants !
❤TY for the VIDEO 😊✌
You are so welcome!
I was always told finger tight not to crank the lids down so the jars can vent and oxygen can expel from the jars. Good video up to that point. Thank you.
Do cherries need to have sugar added to them for canning? Does it improve the color quality
love the video... do you have a printable recipe ? ty
I got one satsuma plant in a small pot turning yellow leaves but I think I want to plant it in the ground but I want to get a few more satsuma plants
Two tiny maybe-try-them out suggestions: 1] Rather than honey, I like to use Maple Syrup (the real stuff , of course. I’m from Vermont). 2] While heating up the soup at eating time (*not* before canning), I like to throw in a good pinch of baking soda. This reduces the acidity of the tomatoes, and the resulting “fuzziness” can add a nice texture to the soup. (BUT, watch out: Sometimes it can foam up quite a bit, possibly overflow if your pot is too full.)
Thank you for the suggestions. I would not have considered adding baking soda to the soup.
One particular difference from canned tomato soup is that canned soup is _so_ much saltier. (Since I stared making my own, I find I simply can’t eat canned soup any more.)
Will you be doing this challenge again in 2024?
I will definitely be doing this again this year. I hadn’t decided if I would make a video about it yet, but there is some possibility there.
We make this recipe but we make one modification to the mixing step. Once the dough is all mixed before putting away for overnight rise we cover wait 15 minutes then do a small 3-5 minute knead. Then we cover and let rise overnight then no dry bits at all in morning. Thanks for the episode. Also, have you ever tried fennel seeds on pizza, so good.
Thank you for sharing how you have modified the recipe. I have had fennel seeds on pizza. I would agree that it is a delicious addition!
new to you..I am in pantry challenge too!
Welcome!!!
Wonderful video. Thank you for being so inspiring for those that are still trying to build a pantry and letting us know its ok to participate but still progress on building our food stores.
Thank you! Glad it can be an inspiration to you. Keep up the good work on building up your pantry!
Personally, I think more people should focus on perennial fruits. They take almost no effort, so new gardeners won't get overwhelmed. Fruit is also more expensive than the typical vegetables most home gardeners focus on such as potatoes and carrots which tend to be very cheap.
I enjoyed your video. I am participating. I do not have a RUclips video account, so no videos from me. I will have a $15 dairy budget per week.
Thank you! Glad to have you be a part of the challenge!
We've decided to join for January. Then we intend to reassess and decide whether to go on thru February as well. I'm really excited about it.
That is fantastic! Starting with January is a great place to start. Happy New Year!
Are you considering participating in the pantry challenge? Looking forward to using more of what is in the pantry.
Where should you place the trash cans for the potatoes to grow? Does it need to be in sun? Brand new to this. TIA
Mine were in the sun most of the day. The nice thing with the trash cans is that you can move them if they need more or less sun during the day. Good luck with this fun project!
I have an overabundance of home canned tomato sauce (just cooked and strained tomatoes). Could I make this with some of that? If so how much sauce would I use and would I have to thin it?
Hi, thank you for that video. It was pretty awesome. My question is I hear that when you are counting you’re supposed to hear a pop not sure if it’s in the water or after you take them out. Not sure that make sure it’s sealed correctly or is that pop necessary? Again, thanks for that awesome video. I’m ready to go and sell last question. How much does one charge for a jar of jam that size I think those are 4 ounce or 8 ounce?
I do live in California where everything cost so much L0l
Glad you enjoyed the video! The pop usually happens after they come out of the water. Sometimes I hear them, sometimes I don't. After allowing the jars to set overnight undisturbed, check them to see if the button is down. If you press on the lid and the button pops up and down, it is not sealed and will need to be used or reprocessed right away. Store jars with the rings off. As for selling, I am really not sure how much would be charged or what the regulations are around doing that. That is not something that I currently do. You could probably check out a local farmer's market. The vendors may be able to give you some helpful insight on regulations and pricing for your area.
If the soil outside the hole is crap, you’ve just created a slow growing elderberry. In my extremely limited experience, soil quality has a tremendous effect on growth rate of elderberry. And you didn’t wet the cardboard. Everything looks lovely above ground. But everything below the cardboard is not well.
Thanks for sharing this! 💯❣️
All good stuff, gardening is an all year round job getting ready for things to come.
Delicious!!!! I added my hot peppers 🌶️ n it's absolutely delicious!!! Thanks for sharing this, your an amazing chef
Very nice. Quick question. Does the butter separate during the canning portion?
You are not supposed to can dairy!
Add the butter and flour when you open the soup to eat. Both butter and flour should NOT be canned.
Campbell's comes in a steel can ..........
What a great harvest💥
Thank you!
Hello from Michigan. I had some tiny potatoes that I left in my garden last year. They came up this year. I had an 18 and a 16 ounce russet, that was absolutely perfect. I got 10 pounds out of a handful of tiny spuds ,that I didn't even plant this year. They are still growing. I can't wait to see what else I'll get. I love your channel. Thank you!!
That is amazing! It is so encouraging to see good results and it is even better when they are volunteers. Thanks for being here!
You cannot safely can a product using flour, please consider using either Arrowroot powder, or Sure Jel. Thank you for sharing your version of Tomato Soup. May God always Bless you with good health, safety, and prosperity in all you do. God Bless ~SuzyJC-in-Central-Southeastern-Ohio_09.06.2023~
Do you use the same amount of sure gel as it calls for flour
Potatoes can be grown in many different ways. If you would like to check out the harvest from growing potatoes in garbage cans, watch this video: ruclips.net/video/SyfArVfLUNs/видео.html This is a link to the raised beds that I used this year: Kesfitt Raised Garden Bed Kit - amzn.to/3GgwKQI
My own recipe is very similar to this but I also throw in 2 carrots and a jar of my home made stewed tomatoes with my blend of Italian herbs. I let the soup cool down then liquify everything in my blender. Return to the pot and continue cooking until it is nice and thick. The pulp and skin add more natural sweet flavor and thickens on it's own. I do not add as many onions, just one large Vidalia. Sorry but if I needed it thicker I would add tomato paste not flour..
Looking to get my potting bench going- have an old *solid* styrofoam bench on casters that was from a retail promotional display. Weird base but I’d rather use it than send to a landfill. It’s perfect counter height. Added a couple 18” square floor tiles to the top for a durable work surface. I may get real fancy and cut out a square for a rinsing sink fed off the garden hose, with the drain hooked up to the garden bed. Anyway, happy gardening!
Way to recycle! Sounds like it will be very functional for you. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy!
Flour is not a safe ingredient for canning.
then why do the stores sell soups that contain flour eggs milk ect.....
@@sadiebea2000 because they have commercial canning equipment that unfortunately can not be replicated at home.
I wish people would get right to the point instead of including a long spiel about the history of their tomato soup experience.

Yup and everyone says don’t feed your animals potato plants it will kill them 😂🤣😂. There wouldn’t be any deer left if that was the case !!😂🤣. Hey people you can feed your animals potato plants it won’t hurt them. I’ve been doing it for over 50 years I ain’t killed one yet !! Animals will not eat things that will harm them. I have happy chickens goats and cows every year after digging my taters !
They sure did enjoy them. Fences are the only way to keep them off the garden here!
@@BloomingWildwoodHomestead we use a double fence. They won’t jump one if there’s another behind it. They can’t judge distance and won’t jump it
Container gardens can be very helpful for those who have limited space. Check out this video if you are interested in how to plant potatoes in garbage cans. ruclips.net/video/IxaiHyqbuC8/видео.html
It is not approved to use grains, pasta or dairy when canning.
I don’t know exactly WHO needs to APPROVE it. I have used flour and cream and butter for years and have killed no one. Do not let those do-Goodyears rule your life sometimes one’s own brain is a much better source to rely on. BTW I’m 79 years old and still kicking. Real high. I have seven quarts of tomato soup on the stove as I’m writing this. Also, butter seems to really mellow out the flavor. Awesome!
Well the government also approves poisoning food that is on shelves in grocery stores around the US and vaccines so there's that.
if it not ok when why does literally almost all canned soup u buy from the store have wheat or eggs and milk or cream????🤔🤔
@@sadiebea2000 Home caning cannot reach the temperatures or pressures that a commercial canning can reach. That is why. I had asked the same thing as you and was told this.
I was.raised on home canned good. There were 6 of us kids and 2 parents and we all did just fine. I have been canning food tje same way my mother taught us and evidently it has not killed us and have never made us sick. Don't believe you have good information.
What are some of your favorite ways to use marionberries?
Looks good! Can you tell us where to get your sieve and other canning tools? PS I would add fresh basil, oregano, garlic, rosemary, and a touch of lime from our garden too. I have also seen some reduce the tomato broth to make it thicker for a stronger tomato taste.
Those are some great ideas! I have had my sieve for a long time and I am pretty sure it was passed down from my mom or grandma. There are a couple options on Amazon that are similar. From time to time, I have seen some at Goodwill or other thrift stores that are more like the one I have. My other canning tools have been purchased from a variety of different places. We have a local store that sells some canning items and I have bought some things there. I have also picked up a few things on Amazon.
