Making a 1949 Advance Pattern Blouse - One Day Make
Hi, I hope you don’t mind my asking… I’m torn between making one of these myself (beginner) and having one made for me, so I haven’t purchased the pattern yet. Either way I have a fabric in mind that’s currently on sale and I was wondering if you’d mind telling me how much fabric is needed for someone with a 36 bust?
@jessicapollman1672 No problem Jessica 😊 I had to look it up myself since I'm away from home and my patterns at present. That would be a little under 7 yards needed for a size 36 bust. This is the link to the pattern's size chart and yardage requirements: margospatterns.com/pages/sizing-charts
@ thank you!
How do you attach the sash to the dress? Is that some kind of rhinestone pin/clip?
@@swagmasternim2807 Yes it is! The two blue rhinestone clips you see in the pictures are actually brooches. I simply jab them through the sash and anchor them into the bertha of the dress. This helps the sash stay secure especially as the dress is off the shoulder.
7mm hoop boning?
@@Coffincruisine It’s been a long while since I’ve made this video so I have forgotten what I might have said, please forgive me. 😅 I used a 1/2” hoop steel similar to this one: www.biasbespoke.com/corset-amp-lingerie/boning-amp-busks/1-2-white-spring-steel-boning-23-sizes-available.html They also have pre-cut and tipped 1/4” boning if that would better suit your needs. I personally spring for the pre-cut and tipped bones bc I’d rather the convenience of those over that hassle of doing it myself, especially for such a small project. 😊
your back yippie!!! ❤😊
Thank you for this wonderful video! I used this as reference for making my own gamurra, I appreciate the amount of detail you put into it!
Very informational on shorts construction.
Did you go to fashion school in London. Your sewing style/ pattern drafting is impeccable! 😊
you are awesome to draft the patterns yourself… do you use the haslam method
wow the dress turned out great…👍🏾
i just love your videos. please dont stop making videos keep going❤
you are very talented
you are so cool… you give the History and the era your going for before you start sewing and you are so thorough l. I am binge watching your videos ❤
you did an excellent job. you explained everything wonderfully. I am glad I found your channel. Happy sewing😊
Lovely
I appreciate your explanation of labels for gowns in the time period you are addressing. In my extensive research into women's gowns in the last third of the 1700s, I have never even once come across the term "Italian Gown"; Not in any museum listings, authoritative books on gowns of this type, or from any other established authority independent of a particular costuming blog. As I began studying the Robe a l'anglaise, I observed that the style evolved to having the fitted back and skirt cut separately, but finding any evidence of a new name never appeared. While it is handy to have a term that quickly differentiates this change of style, I wonder where the term came from other than in a contemporary setting. If you have any sources that reveal the use of the Italian Gown label during the 1700s, I would be interested in finding that out. Great video. Thank you!
Unfortunately I do not have a period source for the name change either 😆
🤩🥰😃
Amazing job. Thank you so much!
If you want your eyelets to be as strong as possible you should not punch a hole through the fabric. But rather use an awl to spread the fibers to the desired size and then cover the hole with thread to make them as strong as possible.

What new things have your been working on? I don't understand how you only have just over 700 subscribers, your videos and the work you put into them deserves more subscribers. I will admit ive missed watching some of your videos, and need to go back and binge watch them. For the meantime stepped away from costuming, I still love it, but i easily get discouraged with the lack of views i get, over how much work ive put in. You clealy work harder at your videos than I and deserve every sub you get. I know you mention some personal circumstances for the delay in your videos, please take as much time as you need, but please continue to post projects your working on. I love watching your videos.
I absolutely love the colors of the hat. They go perfectly with the outfit! Thanks for the inspiration.
Very, very well done!!
Thank you for showing how the pleated skirt gets attached to the bodice! That step has always been murky for me and I just couldn't get it. Your dress turned out wonderful!
Nicely done Lieutenant. Very beautiful and looks gorgeous on you! I have my red security shirt and black pants for my uniform I wear at Halloween parties. I have my phaser, communicator and science tricorder! My wife maid my shirt. I were my police caro pants and black shoe boots.
I am making a bustle but I am stuck at the bustle stay stage (the inner piece)... Is it boned ? How does it stay in place ? My bustle keeps it shape at the top bust collapse near the bottom! I can't find anything online 😫
I'm sorry you're running into speed bumps 😔 From what I recall the inner piece is not boned. The shape of the bustle is created my the tension the inner piece (that lays against you backside) creates. Based on memory I sewed the inner piece to one side of the bustle, boned the bustle, then jammed in under my sewing machine, using all my force to sew the other side down. The permanently curved the bustle and created its shape. I would also perhaps consider the boning you are using, some boning, like the hoop steel I'm using here is much more springy and holds shape by itself more then others.
Im obsessed with this gorgeous colour 😍
Wow Well done!
It's so impressive! I've watched the two other parts a while back and I'm glad you posted the last part. Beautiful work 🖤
It’s awesome! I bought that pattern and just couldn’t make it work. I’m going to try some boning like yours to see if I can save it 😝
Amazing!
I love it you are such a neat sewer
Where did you find the belting? I used to be able to find it. I saw the covered buckles at Mood. Maybe I'm calling the wrong name.
Belting is the right name! I use Heavyweight Pellon Weight Interfacing (71F) from Joanns I get a whole bolt of it with a 50% coupon. It lasts me about a year.
Oh sure. I find your channel and you aren’t posting anymore! 🥴
I loved all three dresses but I would wear the red one forever. XOjennyinseattle
I love this fashion moment, like ‘49-‘53. These turned out beautiful. They remind me of the outfits in “A Holiday Affair,” “Born Yesterday” and “Dear Wife.” I love how much color you put into your wardrobe!
Does the pattern have you do the crotch seam in two steps? I’ve never seen that.
Yes, from what I remember it has you do up the front and back parts after you sew the pleats then put the legs of the pants inside each other and sew the rest of the crotch seam.
Love the brown dress with the double collar.
Love what you made! You have inspired me.
Elfie sew shows you how to add a side pocket and side zip at the same side of garment and is easier then you think hope this helps because two pockets are definitely better than one.
So impressive! ❤️
Wow. You did such a great job and made it look so easy!
This is a really beautiful costume! You can be so proud! New sub here. Sending best wishes from Down Under💕🌺🌸🇦🇺😎
Wow
Working on an EIIR costume and needed a DIY Garter Star. This is perfect! Also, you are a smashing Victoria! You look so much like her! ❤
just found your channel! youbard very talented!
🍁🐾🙋♀️Thank you very much for shearing this precious experience 💗🍀🌻
Very nice, the dress fits perfectly!
the pattern was sold, I have one. you can find it, I don't know if Intergalactic trading company still has copies.
Cute looks! I've heard of Shadow and Bone but I haven't watched it, but I think I'll give it a watch after seeing that still from the show and your look!
Amazing ❤️
Hello there! I'm looking into old-fashioned skirts (particularly from around this era) for a costuming project, and I wanted to try to be as accurate as I could. Regarding closures, was it normal at the time to use the hook closure that you made, or were there other methods with which skirts were held closed? I hope you don't mind the question and the skirt looks amazing! The fabric is beautiful too!
Hook and eyes were the main closures method for skirts, they formed a hidden and secure closure. Buttons could also be used as well but they were more often used for more utilitarian clothes, like cycling bloomers or riding split skirts.
