I knew about the pier operation, but didn't realize that the shuttles had side rods. That allowed one motor to drive both axles on the truck.

It's from the video "Pillars of Smoke in the Sky". It was done by a mechanical engineer who worked for General Motors, using professional grade video and audio equipment. The intro comments something like "We think that you will agree with us that this is one of the best rail videos of all time.".
What fabulous railroading! Imagine being able to stand trackside and watch this!
