What's Wrong With My Horse? | Horse Video | Realistic Farming Vlog | Winter On The Farm
When Grace turned up lame on October 13, I feared the worst. What if she had a fracture, torn ligament, sprained joint??? Part of the journey and joy of owning horses is also the hard things that happen along the way. Equestrians and horse owners alike, have joked for years about how accident prone horses can be. Truly, even if you bubble wrapped them in a stall, they would STILL find a way to get sick or injured. My motto is to let them live life, and 'put out the fires' as they come up. If I coop up the horses in stalls, they're more prone to colic. If they are out in the pasture, they MIGHT injure themselves. Our lifestyle is more rugged than many are used to. And believe it or not, th...

Summer came and went in a big hurry. Or so it seemed...while I truly do think we tried to enjoy every moment (especially things with the kiddos), we also struggled with the huge demands of the farm. Juggling an orphan foal, fencing our property, digging waterlines, installing automatic waterers, renovating my milk shed (parlour), clearing dead trees, picking up sticks, training horses, milking ...

    Still might try the catnip peppermint oil wrap on Raven, it has always been helpful with my horse's joint swelling and aches, I would love you forever if you could film just like 5 minutes of a good snowfall, big fluffy flakes that I could put on loop. Watching snow coming down is truly my happy place. If I am lucky we get 34 good snows a year. This year, we are unlikely to see any. They say we are going to have unseasonably warm temps this winter, setting many records for high temps.. And while it will make for an extended fall riding season, which is the blessing, it means no full moon ride in the snow probably. So a video of snowfall to put on the TV sounds good to me. God Bless.

      Is catnip peppermint oil one product? Or to mix the 2 and wrap her knee in vet wrap? I would love to know! YES! Oh my goodness, I love the suggestion!!! The next beautiful snow I will set my phone out to record for a while! 😍😍 And a full moon snow ride sounds like a perfect idea...that should be on my list this winter!

      @@Liltroyerfarm Two products. Just regular old catnip from the pet section, and peppermint oil from Amazon, grocery store, soap supply shops, herb shops etc. Wet the catnip with very warm water (a couple of tablespoons of dry leaves should cover her knee) enough to form sort of a paste, then mix in a few drops of the oil, pure peppermint oil is strong and it does not take much. Rub a bit on your wrist, if it feels cool and tingling without burning after 10-15 seconds, you got it right I spread it on an old piece of t-shirt or flannel, enough to cover the area, then vet wrap or an elastic type bandage (washable and reusable) to hold it in place. Leave it on 30 minutes or so. The catnip draws out the swelling/decreases inflammation, the peppermint is like an ice pack without the ice, and increases circulation which encourages repair, even in us old girls lol. I use this on myself as well for muscle aches and joint pain or stiffness. Bonus uses for peppermint oil: add to shampoo to encourage hair growth, add to a drink for nausea. add to tea, or hot cocoa for the bestest cocoa ever, are the most common things I use it for in addition to the poultice.

    I know it’s work, but soaking her hay meal by meal often helps if it’s a dust issue. You can do it in a warmer area in winter and haul it out to her. Steaming is the best and easiest (and smells heavenly!) but the steamers are atrociously expensive

    • @Liltroyerfarm
      @Liltroyerfarm 21 час назад

      She had heaves while she was out on summer pasture, so it's not only the hay. However, I do think that the dust in the hay aggravates it more! So soaking or steaming will be necessary to make sure she thrives. Yes, it's crazy how expensive steamers are! So I'm looking into some DIY steaming options! I think I would have to steam it in a hay net, and have her seperate with Raven who would also benefit from steamed hay. But feeding all the horses steamed/soaked hay would be a full time job. 🤯

      Yes, we actually bought big tarps to cover the bales. (That's already been done, just not shown yet!) The Respi-Free has 15 different herbs in it, and I'm pretty sure it helps with detox as well! Just the fact that she's improved so much with a bit of supplementation, tells me it's more of a mild case that can be handled by making some changes. Including either finding a way to soak or steam her hay. 😊

    There is a sticky sauve you can buy after soaking foot in a pan of Epson salt. A diaper actually works great on soft bed of straw in a stall. Make the pink wrap and duct tape your friend. Hay can be steamed It won't freeze quick. Lungs are inflamed from dust and not all hay is good to feed to all horses. Steroids will reduce inflammation like having asthma. Slow process with changes makes a difference. Hope you find your best way to tackle these problems. Knowledge will guide you.❤ WD40 or Grease 😮

    You give her mash? Wondering if she's breathing dust into her lungs, from hay and/or grain. Making her eat too fast isn't helping. I understand why. Just offering help and some suggestions Beat pulp and alfalfa pellets soaked in hot water. Be careful with the steroids. Long term use starts eating their bones. There ARE natural options also. As always trying to help. I feel the frustration coming from you. Solutions will come. Just breathe. You are doing your best and that's enough.

    • @Liltroyerfarm
      @Liltroyerfarm 21 час назад

      I will be transitioning to a mash, especially during winter I think the extra hydration will only help, and of course the dust reduction. She's not getting much grain, and she is eating it at her own pace. With the added oils, and with the grain having molasses, it is very palatable and not dusty. The hay is quite dusty, which is why I'm looking into the steaming option. Just challenging when looking at it practically. The Respi-Free is a blend of 15 different herbs, and I don't have any intention of using steroids unless nothing else was helping. So far so food with the herbs! Thank you for your input, as always! There's room for improvement, I acknowledge that. One thing at a time. I'm just happy that her lungs have calmed down now with supplementation. 😊

I feel so privileged to have been a part of your journey and to have helped in a small way. Here’s to you, Stan and your free range children 😂 Love from me always xxx

    If you rub baby oil on before you paint any spatter will not stick. Works well to get paint out of your hair as well.

    Happy Autumn Saturday Amanda 🍁 Want to mention that Stanley makes a yellow hose that's comparable to farm hoses at Peavy TSC. They come in 100ft or less links and can be found on Amazon, Home Depot on sale. Best hose I've owned. I'm going on year three and they still look new. Hope you are enjoying your weekend. I've been winterizing here and spray painting my birdbath. Appreciate you sharing and the efforts necessary to make those changes. Hugs Neighbor 🇨🇦

    Even though you will not need your hoses as much this winter, a trick we use to prevent frozen hoses, it to lift one end over our head and hand over hand walk the length of it, keeping the part in your hands over your head until you reach the other end. Clears out the water and prevents hosecycles.

    • @Liltroyerfarm
      @Liltroyerfarm День назад

      Yes, I did that all last winter! But still, sometimes the hoses would freeze. 😫

    It’s a shame you have not got a stable for the horses for the winter.It would just be a matter of cleaning and feeding ,and letting them out for a bit of exercise ..But that can be done in the future for them,once you have got more established.Your doing a great job love as you do most of the work on the farm with your husband working.But you will have to get the doors sorted and fill the hole in the shed ,and make sure the animals will have shelter for the winter months .You have snow where you are I should imagine,and being high up,quite bad.So these jobs need doing.You will be fine.I have every faith in you.I always found over the years it was easier relying on getting things done myself .I could do just about anything ,not electrics or plumbing,but now with RUclips ,you can learn anything.I guess it’s because I have got that I am going to get what I want done even if I have to do it myself lol!..Remember in the old days they did not have a lot of money,so they used what they had.You have a lot of trees to build a barn.You don’t cut down clumps ,thin out areas so the trees grow stronger.I noticed there are a lot close together .A good forester would take out some to allow more light in and to give others to thicken.Thin ones can make beautiful rustic fences.You don’t need to spend while improving your land.The horses will benefit because grass will grow amongst the trees,as well as wildflowers.It will give them more room to manoeuvre as well as a longer feeding on natures own grass.The other areas will grow grass again and it won’t get so muddy.You have s very beautiful farm and you have the means to build and get the things you need for basically free..You will just need corrugated roofs.You are very lucky to not only have this beautiful land but all the animals under your guardianship.Not everyone gets a chance like you and your family,especially not at your young age..By the way I am upset none of the goats are due on my Birthday Jan 16 th..They all missed it duh! And it’s a big one for me as I turn 70 lol!..Sending love to you and the children 🥰

    🎉 hey I don’t know if you’ll see this but can you get Temu app in Canada. You should add it to your page. I just found the cutest little goat sign. I wanted to have it sent to you. I think you need a mailing address or PO BOX. But somethings can’t be sent to PO Box.

    Both of my kids have a vitamin D deficiency. My oldest daughter loves to be outside and stuff and still had the deficiency. My son says I'm not an outdoor kid and he definitely has the deficiency. So vitamin D3 gummies and B12 has been a big help. We just need more sunlight. You Are Not Alone.

      Ooo that is a good reminder. I usually start significantly upping my vitamin D in the fall, and I haven't yet. Gonna start that now!
