The best song from the first Stone Ponys album. I think her only lead vocal. Easy to spot the lead singer.

This song hits home. I missed so much of my daughter growing up, things I can never make up with her, but I had to make a living. The railroad life is a hard life.

I was fortunate to have ridden The City of New Orleans in the late 60s; riding north from school in Carbondale. I had no idea how lucky I was and very glad I had the opportunity.

I was never on this particular train, but when I was a little kid, I travelled with my parent on the PennCentral and the New York Central routes. I can still remember, sitting in Cleveland and looking out the window at all the sacks of mail ready for loading. Or, getting a cup of water. It seems like yesterday.

This is one of the two songs I want my boys to play at my celebration of llife...........when ever that may be!! Thanks, again for playing this!!

I'm glad to see so many people use the phrase "haunting" when describing this song. The first time I heard it years ago, that was the one word that came into my mind. By far the best song he ever did in my opinion.

Heard this on a local North Carolina radio station the first night I was staying at my aunt’s place while hurricane Michael tore up south Florida where all my friends were. It’s a nice song. It’s really quiet out in those woods, even in a house. Not like Florida at all.

I grew up "on the railroad" too. We lived 4 houses from a mile-long wooden trestle that crossed the river & was owned by the old Norfolk Southern Railroad. My gang swam off the trestle, knew all the railroad men , rode the trains ( usually on the engine), & spent everyday on the tracks. When I was a teenager, I briefly dated a young Fireman ( who later became an engineer). He was very shy, & the way I met him was, one day my gang was waiting for the train to pass so we could go swimming off the trestle, & the engineer stopped the train, grabbed him by the back of the collar & the seat of the pants & physically threw him over the rail of the engine to land at my feet. I later married & moved away. Ten years later, when I came home, my gang still swam at the trestle, which was Southern Railway by then & my uncle was General Foreman of the Eastern Division. I later moved about 2 miles away, & am in my 70's now, & the new Norfolk Southern owns the railroad. But on still nights, I can sit on my porch & hear the trains blow the whistle for the highway & the creak as it lumbers across the trestle & it's still the most beautiful music in the world!

This song is so beautiful, it was written in 1971 by Steve Goodman was introduced in 1972. Is so sincere and true, it really makes a person to become emotional in a beautiful way. I feel this is the most beautiful version sung by Arlo Guthrie, no offense to other artists!! A song I can listen to repeatedly without getting bored. Trust Mr Arlo is doing well this day. 🥰❤❤👍

I sang this song with gusto back in the 'fifties, then forgot about it for years! Last night in a rare fit of insomnia snatches of it started coming into my mind. This morning 'Hank Snow" popped into my mind. So here I am liking it all over again.
