The vowels are 18 in all. The importance of 18 is highlighted throughout the Hindu religion. {The short form of ए and the short form of ओ are missing!! These two are now not found in modern Sanskrit just like the ॠ , ऌ & ॡ } 18 स्वराः :- अ - आ - इ - ई - उ - ऊ - ऋ - ॠ - ऌ - ॡ - ऎ - ए - ऐ - ऒ - ओ - औ - अं - अः This is as in:- അ ആ ഇ ഈ ഉ ഊ ഋ ൠ ഌ ൡ എ ഏ ഐ ഒ ഓ ഔ അം അഃ There are 18 shakti peethaas (Power / Expression points) Kaali wears munda-maala (garland) of either 18 or 51 (= 18 vowels + 33 consonants). The 33 crores of goddess are the goddesses of the consonants. The vowels give value and beauty to those consonants. In Sanskrit vowels are named Praana - means life Consonants are named Saroopa - means Body. In Tamil, vowels are called Uyir (உயிர்) - means life. Consonants are called Meyy (மெய்) means body. The word that is formed out of three vowels (praanaas) alone and representative of all the praanaas (life) is called the Pranava Mantra. That is अ + उ + अं = ॐ In fact Sanskrit is refined and cultured from Tamil - both are said to have come from Lord Shiva - the primeval God. That Sanskrit has come from the west and it is Aryan which is superior and Tamil is Dravidian and is inferior is only part of the agenda to demean India as a Hindu nation. Understand that this is also the foundation of the eastern languages. The similarity can be seen extended to even Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc. though not as much to the Araimic or latin or Hebrew.
