I suggest you imagine it not as 'and' but as 'as for (me)' or 'on the other hand'. It's usually used when there's some kind of contrast e.g. 'аз съм българка, а мъжът ми е французин' - 'I am Bulgarian and (on the other hand) my husband if French'.

My guess would be the following: а is the equivalent of the Romanian ă and ъ - of the Romanian â. ь does not make a sound of its own, it's just used in a couple of sound combinations. However, when they are not under stress, а and ъ might sound practically the same (that's why you've heard ъ pronounced as both ă and â on different occasions); in fact, native Bulgarian speakers often get them wrong. As for the many words that mean 'to leave/to go/to get going/...', yes, this is definitely something specific to Bulgarian. I think it's a bit worse in Russian, though! I think the reason благодаря sounds in this way to you is because the L sound is much less soft than let's say in English; it's a bit like a w. You're absolutely right that благодаря and благославям have the same root - благ, which means 'nice, kind'. Благо + даря = to give kindness. Благо + славям = to speak kindness. So, while they do not directly come from the word Бог, it's still a valid association, I guess, in terms of a wider lexical field. I bet that the links between Romanian and Bulgarian are a very interesting topic. Also, they seem to say that being fluent in Buglarian and French would make Romanian very easy to learn. And I am veery tempted, to be honest 😀 If I was a bit less busy, I'd probably start a 'Romanian challenge' series right away.

Yes, you're right - these forms imply that we're referring to objects, as there is no final -т (техния, not техният etc). However, we don't have full sentences, so the object role is just an assumption or a 'default' here. I don't think that there are formal rules about how such words and phrases should be written when in isolation, as the full definite article has to do only with syntax (roles within sentences). We're following the guidelines of the exercise - it says 'апартамента им' so we transform it to 'техния апартамент' (if it said 'апартаментът им', we would have transformed it to 'техният апартамент' for consistency). 'Oт' means 'from' e.g. 'Аз съм от България'. 'На' means 'of, belonging to' e.g. 'Къщата на Иван'; it can also mean 'on, on top of' as a preposition of place e.g. 'Книгата е на масата.' Thank you very much for the kind words! When two verbs are used (in the past but also the present, etc.), they always need to both be conjugated; and the second one is always conjugated in the present tense. In fact, there are no unconjugated verbs in Buglarian as there are no infinitives. However, I think what might be confusing is that the conjugation is not always the same as the one we use in the present simple tense. The reason for this is that many Bulgarian verbs have two forms - perfective and imperfective. When talking in the present tense, we use the imperfective forms, but when we have two verbs together, the second one is always in the perfective form. For example, let's look at ex.23 of lesson 8. First we have 'реших да празнувам' ('I decided to celebrate'). The second verb, 'празнувам' is conjugated in the exact same way as we would in the present simple - 'аз празнувам' ('I celebrate'). However, if we use another verb in the second place, such as 'to send', the combination will be 'реших да изпратя' ('I decided to send'), when in the present tense, we say 'аз изпращам' and not 'аз изпратя'. The reason is that for this verb, the perfective and imperfective forms are different. I hope this helps and I understand if it is confusing!

@@Monoglossia hey, thanks for the detailed response. I've been studying A2 for a couple of years now so I'm familiar with a lot of the rules so while it's difficult, and this is helpful for me. I guess I just need to keep practising to get it to stick and understand it better. Shout out to Alex, who I always identify with as the foreign spouse struggling to pronounce and recall words that are in his head somewhere!! His wife is more patient than mine (but she does try to be supportive) :-)

In isolation, it just means “Don’t!” It can also be used in the negative imperative - “Недей да правиш това!” is the same as “Не прави това!” (“Don’t do this!”)

Yes, apart from some exceptions, that's absolutely correct - if a verb ends with two vowels (the last one being -я in the 1st person singular), the imperative ends in -й. The conjugation of крия is: аз крия ти криеш той/тя/то крие ние крием вие криете те крият Also, note that "той крие" means "he hides (something)". If there is no object, the reflexive form should be used - аз се крия, ти се криеш, ... Hope this helps!
