It's the 1980's and the war on drugs is in full swing. With the DEA zeroed in on Miami as a key port for the massive amount of cocaine coming into the country, smugglers begin looking for areas in South Florida with less heat. And the rural pastures around Lake Okeechobee become an enticing landing spot.
They now estimate the 1928 hurricane deaths at between 6,000-10,000 people. Most were migrant workers that were not documented. And this Cat 4 came just two years after the Cat 4 Miami Hurricane (the university's moniker is in memory of this storm) of 1928 that caused a few hundred deaths and thousands of injuries and devastated the landscape and infrastructure of Miami. The 1926 storm affected mainly the east side of the lake. The lake is so huge that it allows the storms to gain power once again after making landfall. Then the Cat 5 Labor Day Hurricane struck in 1935, and the real estate demand disappeared. This plunged Florida into a deep recession, and it did not recover until after WW2 soldiers returned and the air conditioning advancements of the 50s.

There is no such thing as "Borderline" torture. What went on there was, in fact, torture.
Do you know the story of Griselda and Oakland Blacks, nah, right?
You can see the haunting in these boy’s eyes..
Bush was shutting down his competition.. 😆 I was in an e2c Hawkeye squadron that worked out of panama... trust me... bill, too! Also, sam Walton of Walmart..
This is super well done! My grandfather was dean of the high school in okeechobee at that time. Cool to see a doc about a story I’ve heard so much about growing up. And to recognize all those family names lol
What's with the burning palm tree 🌴
Nowadays the guards would be getting dragged 😭
When the truck got stolen from the IHOP and then 300 keys were just giving away and then the town of Okeechobee snowed for the first time yeah it was the end of that somebody's going to jail
the inscription was inside of a heart carved into the tree never was sure who did the carving
your stories not true...not even close...my best friend's dad and uncle were setting coon traps on south Hutchinson Island and smelled something worse than a tidal swamp at low tide...parts of an Australian pine tree were removed as evidence...carved into the trunk of the tree was the inscription...R.I.P. in memory of Georgia Jessup...no ghosts or lingering evil spirits ever appeared,we spent many nights there swatting skeeters running traps and telling stories the trees long gone the beach access is private and probably less than a handful of us know where this took place
"Rednecks" are hard Libertarian-Left Union workers rights activists. Has fuck all to do with whatever this is. People need to stop using terms they don't understand
Them Petersons had the best pitbull breed and the best catch dogs. I grew up with a few Peterson boys.
Your a great storyteller.

The government was doing exactly what they were doing at the same exact time. They were probably doing it for the government
Actually a unique channel.
I wonder if they were Freemasons 🤔
The current Highly Traumatized Male Floridian Babyboomer population.
I believe it’s safe to say, we’ve lost the “War on Drugs” at this point
“We built a new WaWa” 😂 do they have wawa that far south?
interesting story, thanks and well done. The temptation for easy cash.. very destructive.
I knew one of the 8 and loved the story about the $5 bills under the bed. Won’t mention his name out of respect and honor to him and his children and grandchildren.

Great perception and on things. Was an old Indian man and his wife that my dad used to take me to visit he was very very quiet man. Barely talked. But when he did. He sure had things to hear. This was in te 80's, we lived at jiggs landing on the Braden River but they lived inland on the northeast edge of the chobe. Shit he was In His 80's back then. I was told e lived to over 100. Can't rememeber their name for the life of me. Sweet people and a large farm that no longer was in use.
Height of the drug war have you not seen how many Americans are lonely have died from fentanyl we're almost a quarter of a million would say this would be the Apex of it

Creepy you can just hear the evil in his voice!
I used to mow the yard of one of the Okeechobee eight...
Did he treat you right and pay you fair?
When getting young Bhole gets more time than setting up a murder bc jury's moral qualms get in the way of true justice
Most likely the Sheriff faked his death and was whisked off to South America to live out the rest of his days. The investigation was too sloppy for a cover up of crimes. It was more a cover up of a faked death to keep the good Sheriff safe or to retire him from all the smuggling he had done himself. Nice video. I grew up in Sebring, just north. Old WW2 airport there, where the races are held every year, that has a big hand in all this smuggling too.
thank god for different playback speed, the lame ass suspenseful pauses are so bad, just like your dumb idea of having a fake frequency meter on screen, channel is so corny
What about the Clark boys and myakka of gold?
Tommy Charlie Donnie and their sister Cindy. They lived on the dairy farm when I was in jr high school. Do you remember Bubba Rucks? @dirtbike1921
I’m 64 and live in southern Indiana I had a couple friends that made trips to Florida at least twice a month. The 80s was nuts
Wow this reminded me of that 1996 movie Sleepers Its so sad these school exist
Utopia huh? Sounds about like a three legged cat named Lucky. Oh the irony..
Bush was one of the ones bringing it in to the u.s.
We need to Free Mexico and Columbia from our use of cocaine. Legalise it, manage it, treat those addicted. We could save their economies and spend our money on more important things like healthcare and education.
It's very difficult to find good coke these days, especially where I'm at 😔
