    good starting guys, i had one and they are specific on what they like to start, mine had a problem of disengaging on the hard start kick and slam my foot to the ground ,first extending my knee joint then compressing it when i hit the ground! 3 times and i was on the ground, NEVER KICKED IT AGAIN! you are doing exceptionally well! AND I love that exhaust sound, beautiful muffling!!

    I had a 1976 XLCH, last year of the kick start only. Was a good bike! Got it totaled by a dumb kid in a Fiat. Made the parts into a chopper. Still a good bike!

    Nice early Sportsters. Was the rear fender on the 68 dancing around a little when you reved it? Like Snow says, "These are the last of the affordable vintage Harleys." Snap 'em up!

    My engine builder hates it when he sees me walk in the door carrying old Ironhead stuff. I’m 64 and he’s older than that. I can easily see a day in the not too distant future where you won’t be able to find someone knowledgeable and skilled enough to do everything it takes to get these old motors back in service.

      You are exactly right. I'm trying to rebuild a 1972 Sportster motor and most of the people I used are too old, have died, or have dementia, or not excepting Harley engine work. I cannot find someone to dynamic balance my engine. I'm about 20 miles south of Charlotte, NC., in South Carolina. There are less people doing machine work on the older Harleys. This area needs a good Harley engine shop.

    These 3 clutch videos are outstanding! I’ve been riding Ironhead Sportsters since the mid-1980’s and thought “a dry clutch is a dry clutch”. NOT TRUE”. I’m working on 2 ‘59’s and a ‘68 and will have to carefully inspect all my parts to make sure I have the right stuf. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos.

  • @johnkelly6942

    The thin tubes used by Harley to run those seat springs contributed to early frames breaking at the seat post. When Harley went to the fabricated seat post section in 1973 they used thicker tubes so no more spring seats.

    It's good that you showed the grease-soaked glass beads in the holes. Make people aware of what's going on. People rebuild motors with glass beads in the cases and oil tanks that are not flushed out. All that junk in a fresh motor. Just a shame.

    Thanks for the information. Great video. My carb is marked MG on the Venturi, and has a cereal number of E 203. I’ve searched everywhere for a float with no luck. I can order the whole bowl with a float. But I want to keep my original bowl with the S&S on it. Do you know if the float will fit the S&S bowl? And what does the E mean in the number? Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

    That was an easy clean out. I wanted to put the factory sprung seat on my 1972 XLCH. Harley stopped offering that option in 1970. Harley didn't ream out the weld bead on the inside of the tubing. I bought a carbide tipped reamer, welded an extension on to for the reach, and used a 1/2" drill to turn. It was not easy. Also went with Colony parts. I enjoy your videos and like the older Sportsters you work on.

    Great startup video and gorgeous bike! One question - what is the reasoning behind rolling the throttle during the kick?

    • @mrkeopele
      @mrkeopele 26 дней назад

      in my opinion it likes to fire with the air mixture throttle closed position, but, then when it fires, and it is very temperamental, to increase the A/F mixture volume to keep it going, meaning rolling the throttle half way.. that's my experience. The cause is engine temperature fuel ratios are different for this technology.
