Very interesting. I also have a 28 Authentic here in the UK. My only comment would be what you say about the rod. I had thought that the rod in these 28 Authentics was ebony and not the T-bar. I could be wrong about that. Anyway, whether it's ebony or a T-bar, my only minuscule issue about mine is that there is a tiny bit too much forward neck bow for my liking. How is the neck bow on yours? I am considering a compression re-fret to address this on mine, but it's really a borderline issue. I am with you...this is one of my favourite guitars, unlike any other Martin I have owned or played really. All the best.
Hi there...yes it is definitely a T-bar rod in the neck (only ebony in the real early ones plus the war years when steel was in short supply). On mine the neck is absolutely dead flat (it anything perhaps a small amount more relief is needed)... a compression regret is expensive and requires a VERY stilled luthier to do it so it might not be worth it. It has always fascinated me who so many guitar makers insist on putting a spring in the neck and wonder why their guitars sound dreadful...as you have discovered, removing the spring makes the guitar sing. Many of the world's top luthiers, such as TJ Thompson, when they make guitars do it with either an ebony or carbon non-adjustable rod to strengthen the neck...so there isn't the necessity to have metal in there. This has led me to found a guitar company making the type of guitar that your Authentic is but hand made rather than with the obvious compromises that come from a factory set-up.
