We interviewed Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers in August of 2021 in preparation for a documentary we were developing (and are still working on) about veterans in Spokane. I asked her to talk with me about her work among and on behalf of veterans both locally and nationally.

Pop-Up Warming Centers - Segment 4 - "Broken Shalom" If Shalom expresses the way things ought to be, then certainly people experiencing homelessness and wandering the streets of our city in winter weather with no safe place to go, expresses broken shalom; NOT the way things ought to be. If we’re going to build the Shalom - the peace, health and well-being - of our Community, especially for thos...

Pop Up Warming Centers - Segment 2 - "Running A Warming Center Isn't Hard" How hard is it to operate a pop-up warming center? It's a lot of work but it's not hard. It just requires a lot of commitment. The hardest part of a pop-up warming center is finding the space to do it in, and a staff that's willing to sit with and address the issues that come along, a lot of de-escalation. People come to...

Give Me Shelter - Segment 10 - "Credits." The Cannon Street Warming Center, under the management of Julie Garcia and Jewels Helping Hands, ceased operation on Thursday, April 30. The building at 527 South Cannon, owned by the City of Spokane, continued as a shelter operated by a different non-profit. As a result of the trauma surrounding the closing of the Cannon Center, 17 homeless individuals...

Give Me Shelter - Segment 9 - "Broken Shalom." Welcome to what broken shalom, broken trust, abandonment and trauma look like in the homeless community. How we as a community will restore broken trust, heal the trauma and bring genuine Shalom to the homeless, and to ourselves, will be the critical question moving forward. And each of us will need to be part of the answer.

Give Me Shelter - Segment 8 - "The End of the Beginning." The City’s contract with Jewels Helping Hands to operate the Cannon Street Warming Center had always been scheduled to end at Midnight, on Thursday, April 30. Give Me Shelter - Segment 6 - "Celebrating Success." A traditional low-barrier warming center normally sets a very low bar for measuring success, perhaps nothing more than the number of people sleeping on mats every night. The higher the number, the greater the success. But the Cannon Street Warming Center under Jewels Helping Hands raised that bar, measuring their success by such tangible metr...

I've been watching and following from Utah for a few years now. That lady there is the most awesome caring human I've run across that actually really cares about her hurting brothers and sisters on the streets. God bless you, ma'am. 🌟 I've sent her barrier shelter videos to our Utah governors staff to show them how it's done in hopes of them allowing these kind of shelters. However, they don't even respond to me.😢

So happy when they moved in for the winter but then they tore down all the people had gathered with any pride or having an address to get a job. 😢😢. They should have put down tarps for floors and put up those long metal and tarp dwellings. Then let them move in so no one would have known they were there.

Hi ! I live in spokane and i’ve been doing some research on what the city’s doing to help the house less population and drug/crime problem as it’s been affecting my neighborhood and there’s been a stabbing and a super public and scary attempt of murder (my next door neighbors are using and selling narcotics and they have houseless people/customers/friends over all day and all night long) right in front of my place just in 2023 and it honestly makes me afraid to leave my apartment and i can’t afford to move. Anyways i have a question/idea that if you see this comment it’d be super cool to get your opinion on; i just watched an interview with the mayor and she mentioned the city’s struggling with the trash pickup from the homeless population because the sheer amount of it and not having enough hands on deck, and i thought it could be a cool idea for maybe the city to employ some of the houseless people to pickup trash all around the city (or where ever they can) and turn it into a mobile trash pickup or something at the end of each day. I’m super curious if you think people would be interested in taking an opportunity like that or even if the city would even be willing to employ houseless people for that. I’m really passionate about helping people and the environment and it’s always bugged the shit out of me that there’s trash literally and random crap everywhere in spokane; i used to do pickups myself but i started feeling unsafe doing it alone (i don’t know many people in spokane so i couldn’t really recruit friends and family) it would be really beneficial to get more people on board and if we could potentially create jobs for people while cleaning up the city/planet it’s just a double whammy. But yeah since you seem like you’re super involved in all this and know these guys experiences and feelings i’m curious if you think this idea is viable?

I don't known if this will be helpfully but in auburn California. There is no panhandling. Or sleep in front of stores. They have a area that the city or government own and they set up camp there. But the police seem to be on top of it. But we are a smaller town and spread out. But I think if you bring a couple full bags of garbage to a site. That a food coupon could be gave out for a breakfast sandwich somewhere. Or have a microwave to heat up a cup of soup or breakfast sandwich.

Dear goodness, GOD be with all those experiencing homelessness and with a grateful heart I send my Prayers and Blessings out to my fellow children of the Most High GOD who are doing all they can to help the vulnerable in this fallen world. We should help our less fortunate no matter who they are or what they have done, we don't know their story. Please don't let your heart wax cold, remember, Jesus came to minister to the sinners, he did not come in fancy clothing nor did he arrive in grand style with trumpets blaring and soaking up the fanfare of the adoring crowds hoping to be seen and worshipped. He was humble and more than willing to help those who were suffering and deemed unworthy. His love through The Heavenly Father is immeasurable and never has there been or ever will be a sacrifice greater than his. Big props to Julie, Ken and staff. God bless the sweet little man Phil Lewis........💜🕊💚👑💙 thank you for the upload. 💕

THEY HAVE A DUTY TO SERVE AND PROTECT THE ACTUAL COMMUNITY HURKAMP HOPE IS NEGATIVELY AFFECTING, ya know the people that have mortgages and live in the houses that are in that neighborhood get trashed on their yard and things stolen from them on a day-to-day basis. Drug use is rampant in camp hope and you want to have a bitch attitude toward the people that keep the city of Spokane safe. You're occupying land that doesn't belong to you and you're directly causing the people that actually have to get up and go to work everyday that live in the houses around camp hope suffer. go to hell karen

I used to feed Spokane homeless. More of them are stubborn, cruel, entitled, and antisocial than are not. The things they enjoy doing at our churches-peeing on the bathroom floor, leaving hair dye all over the sinks, breaking windows and sanitary despensors, then cussing at me because my homeless butt has to close the church, but has "a HOME to go to!" I had to clean all of their messes up-they refuse shelter. They fight, are loud, and destroy things. They burn their bridges with everyone. Very few WANT help, very many are strung out. I say MANY-certainly not ALL.

  • @andreaberryman5354

We have shelters open. These folks don't want rules and curfew though. "Minimal impact"? They leave excrement and trash all over. The city keeps saying over and over there ARE beds available. Beds have rules. Many are on the streets due to attitude/behavioral problems. They cannot handle authority or people by CHOICE. Mean, violent, vandalizing, antisocial, entitled. They cannot be renters, they cannot be in shelters. I used to feed Spokane homeless. SO many are rude jerks.
