After 8 months riding on our dirt bikes we finally needed to preen our feathers and "ride" the sky again! It worked out good, taking turns to help each other.
A week since my ride here, revisit Minyon Falls after heavy rain 29/9/2024.

Often these falls will reduce to a trickle during our historically driest months - Climate change exaggerates all the many different weather phenomena, enjoy these views from the result of 250mm of rain.

Have a look at what is taking most of my hang-gliding time. Bought a 2018 dual-sport Yamaha XT250, such a good fit for me. Finding a joy that can be shared is one of the antidotes to our modern malaise. Walking your dog, a vegetable garden, visiting a library- find something that gets you in the zone. The ride down the rolling grassy hills back to camp was something I didn't want to end. Nearly...

The image of those daredevil crazies has arguably gone forever, mainly thanks to guys like these, who mentored so many in the very early days of hang-gliding around the different countries. Thanks to ABC and their weekly documentary human interest series A Big Country, we can see a little into the lifestyle choices Ian, Chris, John and others made as "jumping off a perfectly good cliff" became n...

Lovely welcome back to the sky after a 5month break. My new basic harness was a nice match with this basic glider - both light and simple. The soaring around the Cape is experienced pilots only, enjoyable and watchful..

Thanks for the nice video, Col. Paddo handled his launch in the gusty conditions really well! And you got fly the East face that day. Nice! Glad to see you still got your wings.
Thanks Haz, it feels sad but after 50years, for a variety of reasons hg for myself and Paddo and truthfully this northern NSW region is only just "hanging in there". Good luck with your pg and in reality the pg club now.
Absolutely beautiful ❤❤❤ Is that Minyon Falls?
Thanks, you know, when I heard that version of the song I knew I had to use it. Yes, Minyon Falls after a major rain event..
We have to go for a ride together Col
That sounds nice Matt, will ring you soon.
Beautiful video Col. The first launch made my butt pucker.
Thanks mate, a calm pilot and a thoughtful wire-man (or two) is the go when it's anything but straight in and under 14.
Love your videos as well as your choice of music.
Thanks, nothing like a video or photo to bring back a memory.
Great stuff Col
Thanks, just hanging in there!
There's only one like option Col. 🙂
Appreciation increases with age, enjoy your flying.
Great to see you and Pado in the air. I thought you had lost your wings! I was actually on the ramp at about 11 and wondered if anyone was going to take advantage of the perfect conditions.
Paddo launched at 12.45, just missed you, me at 2.15. One thing I've learnt in my late sixties- I want to enjoy different things while I can still do them. Mind you, the dirt motorbikes are a rekindled old joy! Hope life is fun for you and yours old mate..
....makes me want to fly straight away - so cool!
Glad you felt it, I've had a long obsession!
go do it!
Nice ride Col, good to see your at home on the new stead. I'll call in soon and let you have a blast on the 900. Remember the saying. You dont stop riding when you get old, you get old when you stop riding !
I was there just last weekend. Awesome waterfall and a great road for a motorcycle.
Riding a motorcycle is great for all.
Hi Col, I watched your Tween Valley HG video, truly spectacular site and video. Is that site in the Border Ranges National Park? I'd love to go hike there if have any information to share on how to get there please. I live in the Gold Coast Hinterland near Currumbin. I haven't flown in years and would like to get back into it. I probably have to do a refresher course to ease back into it. This site in Tweed looks amazing to fly. It is not too far from where I live either. Do you still fly this site? And I'm curious to know if there are any nice dune gooning sites around tweed coast going south towards Byron? Gold Coast has nothing to offer in terms of dune gooning. I would appreciate your feedback/suggestions. I also enjoyed dirt bikes when I was growing up on the farm, I had a YZ 125. Good fun:)
Hi mate, some bad news if you attempt any dune climbing between Currumbin and Ballina the local rangers will chase you off our fragile dunes. If your serious about soaring flight join the Northern Rivers Hang-gliding and Paragliding Club or the Canungra Hang-gliding and Paragliding Club and become a responsible pilot. There are many protocols to protect our precious sites and many easy ways to lose them too. I only fly the odd coastal site now
@@colrushton8304 Hi Col, thanks for the message mate. I've worked as a ranger before and I have no intention to fly sites that I am not allowed to fly. Which coastal sites do you fly these days? Do you still fly that beautiful inland site in Tweed? Where is that site in Tweed ? Why do you no longer fly inland sites mate? Have a look at this youtube video of a flying site called Budgewoi beach by Newcastle- ruclips.net/video/Ac8w4duWe_0/видео.html Do you have a similar site around your area that resembles this site?

My missus would be trying to catch it so it could live in the house. I'd be out the door and living in the garage. But the table would be turned if it was a huntsman.
Ha, that"s funny.

The reptiles and birds of Australia are amazing.
That's a BIG snake...
What a beauty.
Rate the flares - trousers that is😊.
Awesome video Col...
Thanks, if the people want change bad enough it will only come from the bottom up...- One of the basic problems with society in general is that our leaders tend to be wealthy and powerful. Thus they are shielded from most of the negative consequences of their decisions and of human planetary impact in general. Rich people can stock up on supplies, hire bodyguards, move to more hospitable locations, hide behind gated communities, manipulate the legal system, and in general curry favor with other rich and powerful people. This creates a vast conflict of interest where they are not incentivized to resolve the problems that will disproportionately impact the poor masses. In fact, they get rich and powerful from milking the system that oppresses the rest.
You found your voice Col.
If only us smart primates would elect the best of us-that could be a good start..
Loved the video Col - makes me want to get back into hang gliding ! I was a regular at Tallows and Lennox Head back in the day when Ian Herd, Vern Middleton and Neil Mersham were still with us. Henk Van Raalte was my instructor. All the best !
Thanks, shame we didn't fly with handy-cams but see if you enjoy " Hang-gliding with mates at ByronBay 1978" - one from my YT video channel. Cheers..

Come back, wonderful modern equipment waits for you. Even a single surface like the Piuma will handle super easy, be super safe, and outperform any old wing.
Can't watch any more....! Too many nostalgic memories of the mid/late 1970's when I lived and flew my life away in Byron Bay. Thanks so much for sharing.
It's okay for some melancholy now and then, glad to help you remember..
Wow..I used to fly all the time here in the late 1970's. Nice to see it still working for you guys, but what an incredible change to the buildings/community!
Sometimes it feels like I'm really on my "farewell tour" with my hang-gliding- we will see?
And they say Hang Gliding is dangerous...😎
Funny though, every rider I spoke with, when I mentioned my hang-gliding joy- they ALL thought I was a crazy risk taker! " We take these calculated risks not to escape life but to stop life escaping us."
I flew a hang glider into a hill in east Sussex breaking my right arm aged 16 in 1977 just in time not to sit my O levels. Happy days.
Some moments in life you wonder what my life would be like if that didn't happen?..
Legend Col, live the dream, dream the life. 7:17 - What great memories, well before my time but so cool to see a youngster CR
I see your making lots of new memories, fly safe..
Thanks for sharing Col - you old hippie! Took me back to my training with Ian in the eighties. If I recall correctly the course was $120 including snacks (cookies)! That was an experience!!!
Ha, glad you enjoyed the lessons..
Ian taught me to fly. Byron Bay 1988. He built my first hang glider, which was an Altair 160. The things that I remember from those days; Coorabell (never flew it). It's best when the kids don't get the kids cookies confused for the adult cookies. Shout out Amy/Amie! I still laugh about that one. G'day to Mango if you're still around. Who was that Peter guy from NZ who worked in mining? Ian Hird lives on in my memories.
I think you're referring to one of our Kiwis ( hi Mike), Bruce, who enjoyed his Coopers and eventually rented a cabin near a mountain launch. " Hirdy" was well known in most hg circles..
Happy to be corrected. I was a while ago. :-) @@colrushton8304
What a classic..was that you at Tallows showing your rating?
Ha, not sure, he looks so young!
The US has exported hateful far right rhetoric around the planet. There are too many fools in Australia who go along with it. But its better here than in the US itself.
Nice one Col. Very relaxing. I'm out of the game for a while with a ruptured achilles tendon. Hopefully back in it after winter.
Bad luck mate, rest well and listen to your doctors advice..We repair slower now!
You've got hidden talents Col - this one's a little gem
Thanks, not sure why I make "this" type of video..
Looked very relaxing.
It was, though a few body aches had me landing earlier than I wanted..
Nice flight!
Thanks, the more experienced you become the more relaxing it becomes..
I havent had a fly there for decades. Every time I'm in the area the forecast is crap. Last time - Sep 2023 - the wind had a lot of north and was blowing hard. So I dropped in and said g'day to your brother at Lennox - who also wasn't flying.
Hi mate, September can be a bit off sometimes, best is Oct-April. I just have a coastal fly these days since I'm back into trail bikes.

Thanks mate, nice to ride the air instead of our motorbikes!..
Nice
Thanks,happy flying to you..

Some awesome flying there - the last tandem landing was superb!
Thanks mate, my niece really enjoyed that fly too..
Merry Xmas to you too Colin!
Thanks mate,we are all good this end. Hope your flights go well.
Hello Col, very nice videos and great flying site. I looking at getting back into hanggliding again and doing my refresher. I will be moving down to Coffs Harbour. Are there any nice dune gooning sites in that area that you know of? I love coastal flying but I really enjoy dune gooning. I know of Budgewoi for dune gooning but that site is near Newcastle which is a long drive. Happy flying:)
Nice place to fly.
Yes, restored my mental health for a while..
Beautiful Colin, thanks for the fly 😊❤ I found myself looking for whales in that gorgeous ocean 🐳
Yes, breaching and spouting whales, big dolphin pods and turtles- so much sea life. Wallabies, sea eagles and ospreys- a feast from the smells, the sounds and of course the sights. Thanks sis, a beautiful way to leave it all for a while..
Great to see you back in the air. Enjoyed this very much. Thanks
Thanks mate, lovely fly in so many ways.
Nice , can't wait to get back there in a couple of months 👌👍
Thanks, cheers..
The good ol days - when the weather cooperated. It's hard to get even a bad fly in Melbourne at the moment. And I think it's been pretty quiet at Stanwell too. I hope it's easier to find a fly at Byron than down here.
Hi Col, awesome video... Was this from Palmwoods?
What an awesome soaring day for a blue sky!
