    I started to learn in the hands of Roger fox . I spent a year trying my best due to illness had to give but thank you all for you help between 1978 -1980 Kindest regards all in the tower God loves you all . This is just my reflection in my now a shortened life . Bless you all . Peter Strudwick (Huish )

    My grandfather Sydney Oliver was the cousin of Ernie Oliver who made the small bells. Really great to see this film with him in it.

      Sydney was married to my nana and they had 4 children although two of them died. Nanas family was from Scotland and her and granda both ended up in Northern Ireland. Sydney was a very kind and caring person and adored his grandchildren and we adored him back. He and nana took us out every Sunday afternoon on little trips, he was a very special person. Thank you for putting that wonderful film online for us to see.

    The rhythm of the chimes seems very unsteady, much more so than I remember during my years as an undergraduate at Merton back in the 1970's.

    Nice to hear Shere, their 4th bell was recast due to a crack a couple of years ago, and hadn't hear them since

      I knew that there was something that stopped us ringing at Shere on one of the outings; I thought it was a broken stay d'oh! Shere are lovely. Big old tenor and you need to keep the 7 and 8 up so they don't crash with the other bells.

      ​@@ringerpaul3118oh yeah I've heard off horsell ohhh nice. You should come up to Braunton North Devon near Barnstaple. There a 16cwt 8 & there lovely bells treble second third thorth & sixth only are Taylor's 1885 1886 1829 & 1929. Thith & tenor are Evan l Evans 1713.

    What a terrible thing to happen , this was a a good reading of a play about the Battle of Bamber Bridge, I only found out about this earlier this year and was horrified as had never heard about it

      That's a good question. As we were all visitors no one said anything about that and there was o one there to warn us about 'difficult' bells. The three of us got the tenor chiming quite early on (which I always think helps the bell to go up right).

      Thanks, I did. Lovely group of ringers and there's talk of an outing in October. Since going to the Esher practices on Wednesdays (so I practice twice a week) I think my ringing has improved. Ringing at different towers is also good to build confidence (hence me tenoring behind and ringing such big bells!).

    Thank you for sharing this Paul for the same reason as @jamieabw4517 mentions. It's still very much an issue today as it ever has been. I could tell you of some shocking situations I've witnesssed over the years that's for sure, as I'm certain many others could, but maybe not here.       @@markanthony7184 Thank you! I get quite anxious when I ring the treble; it's getting the slightly larger gap at hand stroke just right that worries me! I going on a 'Better striking course' on Saturday. I've just about mastered Plain Bob Doubles on the 2 - so quite a long way off ringing a quarter peal.

    Great informative video. I was born in 1947 and lived in Gt Yarmouth till I was 15 yrs (1962)old, then I joined the Royal Navy. My father George Crisp was manager of Coop butchers just off the market place, we lived in Priory Gardens. I was never interested in the history of the town when living there, but for the last few years I can't get enough knowledge, and on my frequent returns to the town I garner as much information as possible.Shame the interview wasnt filmed.

      @@068694 Colin Tooke has written two books about the rows: Great Yarmouth: The Rows and the Old Town: 2000 (£14.95 on eBay) and Rows of Great Yarmouth: 1987 (£22.99 on eBay).     I worked at the Foundry during school holidays in the 1960s, my dad was a bell hanger. I did loads of jobs and knew Ron Brown very well, I worked in the handbell shop with Ernie Oliver. Sadly Ernie was killed in a car crash. My dad was a practical joker and played many tricks in the foundry. I am greatly saddened it's all gone and when I was really young I can remember meeting Albert Hughes who was the father of Bill and Doug Hughes. I knew Danny, he was fun to be around. RIP dad I love you.

      It’s great to hear you worked with my grandfather, and worked in the foundry. I have fond memories of visiting the foundry when I was younger. Just a correction, Ernie was not killed in a car accident. He retired and passed away many years later.
