Remote Island, 80 dogs, no vet and one amazing story of Princess the dog. Back in 2022, we spent three months volunteering on the tiny island of Mayreau, of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean through the Workaway platform. We took on the roles of the resident vets and helped as many of the dogs as we could. Here's the story of one of our favorite patients, Princess, and her journey...

    They measure the temperature at the airport: They use 95°C hot water to clear the runway , the defrost the the planes with 70°C hot water and the airplanes heating up the weather station. And a station at an island nearby has no climate change at all.

    So the Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else? Looking at the European Climate Assessment & Dataset (ecad.eu) for Longyearbyen, Svalbard, the mean of daily mean temperature graph (1958-2020) shows 1958 around -4°C. The temperature then declined rapidly and stayed lower around -6° or -7°C until the mid 1980's (Remember CO2 was rising all the time). By 2015 it rose to around -2.5°C and there it levelled off for the remaining 5 years of the record. So an overall change of +1.5°C in a little over 60 years. If this is the fastest warming on Earth we have nothing to worry about. But it does show how variable climate can be, and the temperature changes have no relationship to the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. In the current interglacial Svalbard has been far warmer than today. Using biomarker evidence (for example, the Early Holocene presence of sea creatures unable to survive below fixed warmth thresholds) and glacier melt extent measurements (for example, sea shells buried 6 km inside a glacier), scientists have discovered that much of Arctic Svalbard was about 7°C warmer than today during the Early Holocene, when CO2 concentrations were much lower (near 260 ppm) (Farnsworth et al, 2020. Leopold et al, 2019. van der Bilt et al, 2019. Łacka et al, 2019. Beierlein et al, 2015).

      Hi Charly, thanks for your comment. I think your comment may be wrong, and the treaty members have right to engage commercial activities on the island, but is open to all entirely visa free. (We did meet a Mexican on the island who is not part of the treaty countries who was doing exactly this). Do you have other information to correct us on this? Also interested to know what the other mistake was. Big hugs, Chris.

      @@RollingRoutes they might be allowed to come as tourists, but legally they are not allowed to live or work here. And this kind of misinformation is causing a lot of frustration with us locals here, as we keep getting flooded by "job applications" (literally some of them are just a "hire me or you suck" email) from people that have no right to live here and only have watched videos like yours spreading misinformation due to bad research. And watch the first few seconds and then look up the actual date for sunset and rise and you'll see there is weeks of difference between those dates. As a svalbardian, I stop watching any video about my home town, if the first minute already contains bad research, granted usually it's more along the lines of "3000+ polar bears", so at least the wrong start and end of the polar night was a new one

    • @RollingRoutes
      @RollingRoutes Год назад

      Hi Charly, thanks for the reply,! Are you able to send some links to any official sources stating people can only come as tourists and cannot live and/or work on the island, because we can't find any information of the sorts even on the governor of Svalbard website. Happy to be corrected but we cannot find this info anywhere currently 😊. It doesn't sound nice about getting job applications like that though, why would you hire someone who is rude to you even in the application, sorry you have to deal with that! And apologies about the polar nights dates being off, it was more for example purposes of the length of time, but you are right we were off on that one.

      @@RollingRoutes and since apparently using Google is to hard here is the passage from Wikipedia "All citizens and all companies of every nation under the treaty are allowed to become residents and to have access to Svalbard including the right to fish, hunt or undertake any kind of maritime, industrial, mining or trade activity. The residents of Svalbard must follow Norwegian law, though Norwegian authority cannot discriminate against or favour any residents of any given nationality." And yes, that includes work laws as that is considered undertaking industrial and trade activities.

    Contrary to popular belief, Europeans (not him) from a few earlier centuries never liked to live in frigid places all year long, and years in the northern reaches of the geographical Inuit areas of their countries where it's forever frigid and icy almost all the time. Only Eskimos / Inuits liked such places of those three countries and Imperial Russia all year long and all around the north pole actually from just north of the Arctic Circle. . During the time of Peter the Great, North Sweden and North Norway and North Finland exported or deported all their Inuit Eskimo populations living there 300 years ago or so, living around the Arctic Circle to Imperial Russia and north Russia and Siberian Russia, in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia. This was how Sweden the other two countries got rid of their Inuit populations and Eskimo populations about 300 years ago, in exchange for money. They were exported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money. The Eskimos were replaced by whites with a Nomadic lifestyle in North sweden and Norway and North Finland in places closer to the North Pole. I forgot the name of that ethnic group, like Sami white Inuits or white Eskimos, which had a similar lifestyle to Inuits. Like Inuits, the Sami white tribes likes fish and reindeer meat. All Inuits / Eskimos of North Sweden and North Finland and north Norway were deported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia about 300 years ago.
