1996 SCCA Trans-Am from Minneapolis (Children's Grand Prix of MN) - July 7, 1996
For three years, between 1996 and '98, the streets of Minneapolis became a racecourse. This, the Trans-Am series, was the premier event for the first year. The Trans-Am series competed in all three years of the Minneapolis event before sadly going away due to lack of sponsors, proper funding and poor ticket sales. In 2010, the series eventually made its way back to Minnesota, racing at the shortened 2.5 mile Brainerd Int'l Raceway road course.

Buffum and Company: Performance Rallying in North America

I dubbed this down from an old VHS tape, but fixed contrast, color correction and saturation. The film was made by British Leyland, covering John Buffum's career during the 1977 season in his Triumph TR-7.

For several years, RallySport was your best way to get VHS videos and DVDs at major rally events in the U.S. and Canada, between the late'90s and early '00s. Often, they had pop-up tents set up at parc exposé and service areas. Around 2003/2004, they sadly dissolved. (NOTE: Do not call or write, as they are no longer in existence!!!)

This was a great era for rally in the U.S.! The sport grew exponentially this year. A variety of Hyundais, Mitsubishis, Subarus and other manufacturers battled relentlessly among the five classes. LSPR was the final event on the 2000 calendar.

1986 UMSCC Welcome Week Auto-X (Minneapolis, MN) - Fall 1986

Although I'd been autocrossing cars for two years by the fall of 1986, I was asked to co-event master my first event with Ron Hirabayashi. Thankfully, Ron and a few friends documented 15 minutes of that day onto a VHS tape. This was on the very small Lot 37 on the U of M grounds back behind the tennis courts. Later on, I went on to be event master for several more UMSCC events. When that group ...

This was the last of five races my father put onto a VHS tape, so it's bit jumpy in spots. Paul Tracy decimated the field in the wet at Mid-Ohio that year.

39 cars !!!
where's all the 510's?
They came in the next year.
Love that S4!
Did Harvey West have any A-Sedan video at Road America the same year (1973)? I am looking for pictures/video of Leonard Janke in a 1967 Camaro.
Thank You!
There's jerry hansen winning again
Excellent film transfer work, Jerry. Harvey West was real good with a movie cam, as well as a race driver. This is an excellent documentation of SCCA Can-Am racing during the series' peak at Road America.
Great footage! Thanks for posting. You wouldn’t by chance have any photos from this race. I’m looking for photos of the Escort that looks like it only lasted one lap 🤦♂️
Unfortunately, I don't.
When did they start doing the historic races? Right after Can-Am ended?
Roughly since the late-'80s. It used to be called the Chicago Historic Races, but now called the WeatherTech International Challenge with Brian Redman Weekend. It's in July of every year.
From a Parnelli Jones Tribute I learned he helped save AJ Foyt's life in this. Parnelli reached in his mouth and pulled out debris blocking Foyt's airway.
I believe Parnelli helped Foyt at Riverside in a stock car wreck. This wreck was at Road America.
The Doctors book talks about this incident and many others. It’s called rapid response by Steve Olvey. Talks about Zanardis wreck in the book too. One of the best books I’ve ever read on the subject.
Thank you for posting these 1992 Atlantic Championship videos. I was the lead mechanic on Cameron's team beiginning at race #4 at Lime Rock and I've been looking for these videos for years.
I was a corner worker that weekend. A good friend was the first to reach the car
Thank you for sharing these complete races! Great stuff!! And 1080 too, very nice!
Thank you Jerry for taking the time to share these! And in 1080 too, very nice! These are great to find!! I appreciate the info too (without spoiling the ending)!

Thank you Jerry !
Awesome!!!
Thanks for uploading this! Glad to see another lost Trans-Am race found!
This must of been one of Calvin Fish’s first races behind the mic
He used to come into our family donut shop in Maine regularly.
Thanks for your dedication to archiving so much racing history.
Thanks for the video, really cool to see as a Minneapolis resident and racing fan! I was curious where exactly this was in Minneapolis and was able to figure it out from watching this video. While Minneapolis has changed a lot, especially in near the Mississippi / Gold Medal Park, there are still lots of older buildings that giveaway the location of this course. I'll describe the track layout below -- pull up a map and follow along if you are interested. Starting in front of the old Milwaukee Road Depot (turn 1), head north on 3rd Ave just to 2nd St where the track turns right and faces east for the long backstraight. The straight continues all the way to 10th Ave, broken up by a small chicane through a parking lot where the Guthrie currently stands. At 10th Ave, the track turns right, then right again to get back heading west on Washington Ave. Shortly after is another series of quick turns around singular city blocks, with a left onto Chicago Ave, right onto 3rd St, left onto Park Ave, right onto 4th St, and finally a right heading north on Portland Ave. From this point, the track heads back north and passes between the modern-day Wells Fargo buildings up to Washington Ave with a left turn to start the main straight. The main straight continues up to the Milwaukee Road Depot where the track's first corner is. The pit lane follows along the main straight from the final turn onto Washington Ave and exits just after the first turn.
Great views with no catch fences.
It would've been cool to see an IndyCar race at this track.
My car belonged to Joe Sposato. Sorry to see that he was a DNF!
What a wonderful bit of film to find, especially since I'm (re)reading The Stainless Steel Carrot right now.
Look who is in the camera shot at 5:07!!
Dude I’ve wanted to see this for years!
This was a preview to what to expect from PT in his CART/Champ Car career....
This is great, thanks! Do you happen to have the 1997 Trans-Am race from here?
Unsure. Dad recorded a bunch of stuff. I'm basically grabbing a random tape, digitizing it on my laptop, editing, uploading the finished edit back to the computer once completed, and then uploading to RUclips. There must be an additional 40-50 tapes to go through yet. Each tape typically has 4 to 7 races on it.
@@comicozzie1 That's awesome. I'd love to help archive these some day if you ever needed help. I have some high end tape equipment and love archiving this kind of stuff. Thanks for your work getting this online! I don't think this has surfaced anywhere else before.
Jerry Winkler, you are the man. I imagine you are sitting on stacks of VHS gold.... thanks for sharing!
Also, I now realize you took the picture of my 2 favorite childhood FV liveries, Kochanski and Otto at Brainard. Great photo and thank you for your service.
This is great! Do you happen to have the Trans-Am race from that same weekend?
I received this VHS tape from a friend. Sadly, it isn't on there. If my father put it onto VHS tape - and there's a lot to go through - it may be on one of those tapes.
How did you end up with this footage?! Thanks for posting it. It was a very memorable experience for me.
A friend gave me this tape a year and a half ago. I have no idea how he got it. Cool, huh?
Excellent find. I hope the door is open for you to post more motorsports content from SPEED and ESPN. Do you happen to have the full LSPR broadcast? Thanks for preserving this amazing network's history! I love being able to experience racing history firsthand like this!
I just uploaded 2000 LSPR overnight. Thanks! And yes, there will be lots more!
First time I saw Tracy race was on the TSN Television Network here in Canada and it was the Porsche cup they were all 924 Porsches and he was a real cocky piss at then but he sure could drive a car I always really enjoyed watching him race got to meet him once at the Molson Indy in Toronto champ car was really something back then great memory thanks I enjoyed that
I was six and a half when this happened and watched it live because racing is god, but anything starring Paul Newman must be watched by everyone. Especially when an actor can out perform people, that race cars professionally.
I was also 6 and 3 months. While not at this race, I s0ent summers here while my dad raced SCCA. I believe my grandma would have made some TMZ money in a different era, she got a picture of Newman taking his own garbage bag out of the trailer to a paddock can! Different times indeed.
That wasn't Mid-Ohio. AJ's horrible crash was at Road America
Correct! It was at the end of the front straight at Road America in late-September, not Mid-Ohio. That said, this update was announced on ESPN in mid-October. Dad just happened to catch it on his VHS recorder.
I was there. We had no idea what happened and the race was delayed for what seemed like an hour.
@@comicozzie1 23 September to be exact.
What is a v8 tracks .. lol😂
Did he win?
He did! Had a successful career in Minnesota, then retired recently. I just happened to find this on an old VHS tape my dad had made. As it wasn't on RUclips, I opted to post it.
RIP Jovy Marcelo.
That's A.J. (Jerry) 'Foyt' Winker in red #69 Mazda GLC.
I'm still a fan of Saleen and I owned a white one...but the Rangers were the coolest.
I was at this race. Eight years old.
I don't know what's better...the racing of the graphics...😉😆 ~ John
My run at 12:45 looked alright for my shitty autocross style. I couldn’t grasp going in slow and coming out fast. Bridgestone RE71s were a blast for a budget performance tire on that car.
You must have had two drivers in your GLC. #mazdaglc
I was at that race. Man, it was hot and humid. My buddy and I left the Twin Cities at 2 in the morning and heading to Road America. It was solid fog most of the way. At times, I could not see the road, so tried to stay behind semi trucks and use the lights on the trailers to help navigate. After the race, it took close to 3 hours to leave the track and then head back to the Twin Cities.
NICE work Jerry!!
Love the big bubble visor on half helmet.
