Some fun LCD Readout trivia: This is the actual song (if any) that Jonathan struggled to write for Playwrights Horizons. Jonathan wrote at least seven drafts of a totally different song called either "So Easy" or "Easy" (the lyric sheets don't have a title so for now we're gonna go with that until I can hopefully get better confirmation or maybe even find demo audio or sheet music), which started as a duet between him and Elizabeth and then became a solo number. While most other Superbia songs have only between maybe one and three revisions, it's very clear Jon wasn't happy with "So Easy", and kept revising it before PWH before it suddenly was replaced with LCD Readout. I notably didn't find any prototypal material for LCD Readout, doesn't mean it doesn't exist but does mean that I'd wager once he had LCD Readout written it was a lock-in and "So Easy" was thrown out. Both So Easy and LCD Readout cover similar topics, but in very different ways. While LCD Readout has Josh staring at the clock and justifying his own descent further into nihilism and the In lifestyle, So Easy instead has him singing to the camera in Roi's room, remarking that the camera made everything so easy- he didn't have to think about much of anything because the camera could decide who he was and what he wanted. In the duet version, Elizabeth is sitting in her room, writing Josh a letter about how feelings are starting to come more naturally to her now that she has discovered them. They both conclude that (in Josh's case, becoming emotionally desensitized and in Elizabeth's case becoming emotionally aware) has become easy, before they both go to sleep, with Josh plugging in. While I don't know that anyone knows what "So Easy" would've sounded like at this point as from what I can tell the LoC doesn't have any audio of it, I'm willing to trust that Jon probably knew what he was doing with this one. LCD Readout is pretty amazing overall. I do however appreciate some of the lyricism in So Easy, as it very explicitly talks about reality television, with lines like: "You were the mirror Only through you can I picture myself Infinite mirror Only through you can I picture myself Doing things I've never done Seeing things I've never seen Saying things I've never said Wanting things. Having things.. So many, so many things So many, so many things.... And the person I was And people I knew And the things that seemed important before Don't amount to anything more than Images Which dissolve into ghosts Leaving nothing behind Only silhouettes That fade into grey"

Some fun trivia on this song. It was a part of the earliest Superbia script in 1985, but by 1986 was given new lyrics and entitled "Too Cold To Care". The demos for 1985 and 1986 were sung by Scott Burkell, who also voiced the main character Josh in other demos from 85 and 86. The song continued to evolve, and while the title stayed, the same after that, the overall tone of the song continued to darken throughout Superbia's '87, '88, and '89 script revisions. So to sum it up: 1985 - One of These Days - Fun and upbeat number about wanting people to see your potential and love you for who you are. 1986-1987 - Too Cold to Care - Somewhat snarky number about wanting to fit in with everyone else and not be burdened with feelings. 1988-1991 - Too Cold to Care - Way more rock vibes now, slightly different tempo, now basically about pure nihilism and basically wanting to party away the rest of your life because you know the end is coming fast and don't have the capacity to care anymore. In many ways, it really mirrors Josh's progression from the fantasy "knight" archetype in 1985 to more of a satire on that in 1986 with more insecurity, to basically being ruled by his insecurities in 1988 and beyond.

For credits, the characters and their singers in this demo, in order of appearance: M.T. - Barbara Marineau Roi - Tia Speros-Harker Josh - Scott Burkell Elizabeth - Marin Mazzie Studd Starr - Jonathan Larson Hank - Mark Mazzie Mark is Marin's brother and only plays Hank in this demo. It is currently unknown who played Hank in workshops and the other demo featuring Hank's voice (a song entitled The Electric Gate). Working to try to solve this mystery but aside from that the rest of this is now known. :)

Saw Antonique on broadway in December of 2005 and she was absolutely unbelievable. Can’t believe that she’s hasn’t blown up, she is so incredibly talented.

Okay 👌 fr sixtet the original blew my mind and I thought the movie sold out and should never have changed it.....but honestly after hearing this wow just wow! 😮 This is truly the biggest travisty the film missed out on! Imagine the film version faded out to this version! This is the most touching version I've heard! 🥰

Some parts of this song would also be recycled during LA VIE BOHEME. When Idina Menzel and Freddi Walker were both cast for the 1996 WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION OFF BROADWAY, the song really didn't fit great for the story and their voices. Jonathan went back to their original audition songs & wrote a whole new song around both Idina and Freddi's vocals.
