5 watts my friend, this is masochism towards oneself and sadism towards others :) 73! :D
@@czxc53ca8b80a_kono I know. It’s awesome. ruclips.net/user/shortsbLilhRxyX3A?si=IZ3Pi1y_iqnwvk-p 73!
I will. Hope to see you on the air tonight. 7 to 8 pm around 7035 . 73 Ron
This is very helpful. Please do more, thanks. 73's.
this looks awesome, i wish i knew what was going on lol
How about 6M man! Come on! There many techs out here wanting to know.
I put out two "CQ CQ TEST OY1R". It resulted in one contact followed by one spot and then pandemonium, i had no chance in containing the pile so i had to qsy and proceeded with search and pounce for the remainder of the test. I did just shy of 300 q's. I had a good time. 73 OY1R
That's amazing. How much power were you running? I tried calling a few times and had a nice little run on 80 meters, a few contacts on 40, but not much luck other than that at 5 watts with my wire antenna. So, almost all S&P for me, which I like. 73 Ron
Hi! What do you think about the interface FTDX10? Were you able to get used to it completely? The receiver is good, but the usability of the device is questionable.
Hi Ivan, at first I wasn't so happy. Two things - the screen interface and the physical interface. For the menus, I was used to Icom, which is better (for me). The 7300 or what I have, the 705, is very intuitive. But I'm familiar with the Yaesu now and it's good. For the physical interface, I got used to it pretty quickly. The quick band changing is poor and you have to remember that when switching, but you get used to that, too. It's tightly packed around the VFO but yes, it's okay. I'm used to it now and quite like it. Great receiver. 73 Ron
@ve3sif Thanks for your opinion. I have a similar story. I gave two chances Yaesu, but every time I sold it and came back to ICOM 7300, 705, 7610. Now I had to sell all the expensive equipment, I bought third time FTDX10 and it seems to me, that I can use it )))
Fantastic Antenna Setup...💯👍 73 de Uncle Günter across the Pond 🙋♂
Thanks, Günter. It's humble but it works for me :) 73

That looked amazing, and a lot of fun. Now, I need to get out, and activate!!! DE K7RLN
@@ralphnunn3 it was fun. I’m keen to do some portable ops in the snow this winter. Hope to see you on the air! 73
How can the SWR display be wrong like that? Is the forward and reflected power detector wired in backwards? And how does the SWR protection not trip?
Not sure why. It came that way pre-assembled. I have to disable the swr protection. The suggestion is that there’s an issue with the T507. I’m not a builder though - at least not for something this small. But I might try to fix it when I get chance
Oh. And the new issue I have is no transmit on 80 meters which did work for a while. I’m trying to like this radio.
I think the clicking can be fixed with some AGC settings (and firmware update). I have the QMX and the same JBL speaker.. works like a champ.
@@miketaylor6700 thanks Mike. I did (finally) update the firmware and that did help. Receive is much better too and I love the new filtering. I’ll keep playing with the settings but it is already better. 73
Do you have enough radios? Which do you like best? By the way I love that you didn't clutter up your video with needless chatter.
No, I don't think I have enough radios :) I've been asked to do a video on the little qrp radios I use. I'll try to do that. My newest portable QRP radio is the Mountain Topper MTR-4B and I always go for that one. Maybe because it's new to me. But it's a joy to operate, very quiet receivers, solid construction - no mechanical issues, firmware updates, or big menus. I'm keen to try the new MTR-3B. Thanks for watching. 73 Ron
AWSOME Activation 💯💥👍
Thanks 73
Thank you for sharing Ron, that was great.
@@janiceemery2008 thanks Janice 🙂
Hi Ron, which antenna tuner do you use for (tr)USDX? 73, VE3INE
Hi Mary, I don't use a tuner. The end fed antennas I use work for 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters without a tuner. This is the one I was using in the video www.hyendcompany.nl/antenna/portable_mini_hyendfed_antenne
Interesting build! What ferrite core/wraps are you using for the balun?
I think I used a 240-43 ferrite. The design is based on HF kits mini end fed so 2 primary and 14 secondary turns. It was an easy build, even for me, and worked really well. Maybe my total cost at the time was about $40 CDN. www.hfkits.nl/beschrijving-mini-aanpassingstrafo-end-fed-antenne/ ruclips.net/video/5KgyaDQ2IuE/видео.htmlsi=t_TV33gbQ0uPZEBH
@ve3sif Looks like I am going to have to give this one a go. Thanks for the reply!
How is it full of tuna salad?
Nice video Ron. Your callsign is great for CW, the series of dits makes it quick to send and really stand out, 73
Thanks so much, James. I was thinking about cw when I chose my call sign. 73 Ron
What is going on here?
I really like the Icom 705. I use the Icom 7300 for a base rig. Does the Icom 705 have an antenna tuner? Thanks for sharing the activation. 73s
@@MyHamRadioJourney I love the 705, but no it doesn’t have an internal tuner. I currently use the LDG Z100 plus with my 705, when I need a tuner. In the field I usually don’t use one as my antenna gives me four bands without needing a tuner, sometimes five bands (80 meters if I use a longer antenna). The mAT 705 is a great small tuner made for the 705. Here’s some tuner video ruclips.net/video/5VAMhklORHk/видео.htmlsi=nNfVKC-Ukq-6b7yo 73 Ron
The Icom AH-705 is the matching tuner from Icom. Works great but is another small box to carry and hook up. (n4gf)
Good to see more POTA by bicycle!
GREAT ! !! 💯👍🙋♂
Thank you!
Awesome Sauce! I made my own EFHW antenna too! Works like a champ! I have a QMX from QPR-Labs… but may invest in a Mountaintopper too! You can never have too many QRP rigs!!! 72 Mike KK7MMN

@@VE3FAL1Fred thanks Fred! 73 Ron
Nice video! i am wondering do you like the mat705 or elecraft t1 more?
@@tangjinbh4fdj970 for the Icom 705 I preferred the mAT tuner. It interfaces with the radio perfectly. But it’s only for the 705 so the T1 is more versatile. If you’re looking for something for multiple radios, I would look at the T1.
Sounds great on Ssb for certain
Big difference on SSB indeed.
Nice job! I am having fun with my QCX Mini and am on the list for a QMX! N7BBQ
Thanks, Ron. These little radios sure pack a lot of features into a small package. This was a fun activation. 72 Ron
Love it! Amazing how far 5watts can actually transmit (when the sun isn’t mad). :)
Thanks! I have a lot of fun with the small qrp radios. 72 Ron
Great activation. Gotta love the QMX + Bamatech
thanks! It was a quick one, but a fun one.
Nice Ron..are you in the NAQCC sprint tonight? VE3IIM/VE6PG
I need that tuner! Thanks for the demo!
I use the mini round speaker (the same one) with my (tr)uSDX, and it really changed things for me. Now you are making me want to buy the JBL! Of course, I admit that I'm not doing CW (yet), but then, your videos are inspiring me to learn CW!!!
The JBL does give a better sound (to me) but not as portable. I think my mini speaker may be giving up - tried it today with the truSDX and heard a lot of static. It has been through many, many portable ops sessions. If you do look at the JBL, make sure it has a cable connection and isn't just bluetooth. Code is awesome. I do hope you give it a try and maybe soon I'll see you on the air! 73 Ron
Just stumbled on to your channel! GREAT videos! On point, fantastic use of time in short videos that drill down to exactly what the title says! Need to send you to Texas A&M and have your DNA cloned, so more channels can be as good as yours!!!
thanks, Dewayne. glad you like the videos. 73 Ron
Good Morning. I have the talent cell on order for the MTR-4B but I wanted to ask you will the bioenno BLF-0910W work for the MT? I am not very smart when it comes to the voltage and amps issue but, I wanted to make sure this battery would work also. Thank You
Yes it will work. Your output will be lower because it’s only 9 volts but it will work and some ops like to use 9 volt batteries. Ron
@@ve3sif Thank you Ron. Thanks to you I am almost setup to listen and maybe try some of the SKCC Special Events. Thank You
Ron, the power poles that you attached to the leads, is that connecting to the power cord that came with the radio? I assume you will put power poles on that cord correct? What size are the power poles you used? The power cord that came with the MT is really small wire. Thank You
@@janiceemery2008 Hi Janice, I used what I had, which were these from Amazon: CESFONJER Powerpole Quick Connect Battery Connectors - 10 Pair Quick Disconnect 30A 600V Power Connector Battery Plug+terminals Red Black Note that when I attach powerpole connectors, I solder them, not just crimp them, 73 Ron
Hi! Just wanted to make sure; Is using my 12.2v supply dangerous for my qmx (with such small difference) if stated no to go above 12v? Thanks!
I don't think 12.2 v will be a problem. As for my SWR,. the indicator on my QMX has never functioned properly unfortunately even though it was factory built. 73 Ron
No lock ups and no band changes during transmit? Which version radio and firmware are you using?

I just got an MTR-4bv2.3 on the very last release last week. I am new to CW ops again after 40 years. Have not used it since I was a Novice when I was 12-13 years old. Hoping this can get me back at it. My copy speed is pretty slow but can send pretty good. I enjoy your videos, and @Utahforrest I enjoy yours's as well. Love the content! keep it coming. 73 de KA9MIC
@@Mr3bairs Hi Jeff, thank you. I’m really liking the MTR. Have you got a key, power, earbuds and antenna sorted out yet? I need to work on my copying, too. And sending. I found (and still find) the slower speed events helpful like the weekly K1USN slow speed test and the monthly SKCC weekend sprint. Lately I’ve been working through the CW Academy material on my own and I’m thinking of signing up for the September session if I can make it work with my schedule. Lots of resources on the internet to help with code. Not like the old days of practicing with a record 😀 Have fun with your new Mountain Topper! I’m looking forward to seeing you on the air for a cw qso. 73 Ron
@@ve3sif Thanks Ron, hope to get you in the logs soon. I do have the BamaKey TP-III already and have been using it. I also have the 3ah Talent Cell, and a pair of old Sony headphones. I will probably use the LEFS 40-10 that I already have for POTA. I live in an HOA so I have been putting up a 17' whip in the backyard with my FT-891 and that has done well. I am a member of LICW but have not been to many sessions yet. I hope to get out and do an activation soon. I have several state parks close by that have good areas to setup in. Once again thanks for the reply and look forward to more videos. 73 Jeff
I really enjoy your videos. I recently got an MTR4B and have been doing tent activations all summer. I’m a fairly new op and was out camping recently when I made a QRP DX QSO from my tent at 5am on 40m Utah to Australia. It’s the highlight of my POTA career! Haha. 73 de KI7QCF
@@Utahforrest thanks Forrest! Nice DX!! The next time I’m out I’ll give 40 meters a listen early in the morning for DX. I’m really liking the Mountain Topper. When I was making this video I was reminded of how quiet the receiver is. Hope to hear you on the air sometime. It would be great to work p2p, mtr to mtr. 73 Ron
Mine does the same thing in the message function…I saw another you Tube ham replace the internal battery and it solved the problem…Havnt tried that yet…How do I overwrite a previous message?
Hi, yes changing the battery solved the problem completely. If you want to change a stored message, go to message entry - enter your new message and then store it in the same memory button as the one you want to overwrite. It will save the new message. 73 Ron
I just made a QMX+ and have the same issue. 1.3 SWR, protection set to 3, and the QMX stop transmission. If I remove the protection, it work fine, and don't show SWR on the SWR indicator.
