What a beautiful organ piece and SO nicely played as well. I suppose one could say this piece is uniquely esoteric -- but OH How Lovely to be able to apreciate these haunting melodic strains and medieval harmonies ! What could be more Christmas like? Thank you !!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed George's writing. This comes from a collection by him that is based on pieces from various countries, so it is a bit like traveling around for Christmas. I've recorded several others that you might also enjoy. Yes, a bit esoteric for many listeners, given this is not nearly as common a melody as others, but that's something I try to feature on my channel - not to many of "the standards" but more of the things that get overlooked for no good reason. I find these pieces welcome around this time of year when we've been subjected to "the usual suspects" so many times. Something fresh is just what is needed. Erik
Nice piece. This is one of the pieces I am played at our AGO concert recently.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed this recording. A fine choice for recitals. John writes interesting music with consistent quality. I've done recordings of many pieces from him for new publications and I've liked them all.
Wonderful composition! Wonderful interpretation! The best organ piece I've heard in a long time! Greetings from Sweden!
Many thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have been meaning to record this since it was written, but somehow other things kept coming up. I'm glad to have had the time this season to push through. Erik (with a "k")
“Machine, turn back now” -Gabriel
Ja. Alles Gute. Ortwin Benninhoff
Ja, bitte bleiben Sie in Kontakt.
Erik
A nice piece and recording. I enjoyed listening.
I'm glad you liked it. The score can be found in Barenreiter BA8427 if you'd like to play it yourself.
@ErikSimmonsOrgan Thanks. There is so much nice music I would like to play but I can't because of the limitations of my four small completely different organs I play regularly - the "biggest" one with 14 ranks. Or for example Christmas Eve on my smallest one, 2 manuals, Flute 8' Principal 4' Waldflöte 2' Scharff, second manual Flute 8' Flute 4' Principal 1', Subbass, "restored" in the eighties from a romantic disposition to neobaroque - I have no idea what to play ...
@@intermezzo-musikalischestr2987 Here are a couple of quick suggestions for that organ if I were to have to play at Christmas: Little Partita for Christmas, James Woodman: ruclips.net/video/a95m71YFSzY/видео.html (Both books of partitas for the liturgical year are quite useful on organs of any size) Little Fantasia on "In dulci jubilo", Carson Cooman: ruclips.net/video/7qR1Qp1sJgs/видео.html (and some of the other tracks from that CD can work well on a small organ) Some things from Lothar Graap would work well: ruclips.net/video/WzfulNIzU48/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Y-_Q7EM7-yA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/IcR8PCN-Jw0/видео.html (registered big in this recording, but playable small) ruclips.net/video/aUPAKoQIBy0/видео.html (Also playable small) And this Buttstädt is manuals only and not difficult. Johann Michael Bach chorales are mostly manuals only, optional pedal. I'm sure there are more...
@@ErikSimmonsOrganMany thanks.
This has a large organ sound to it, very nice.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the music and sound. Erik
@@ErikSimmonsOrgan Stop by....?
Lovely soothing piece and nicely played as always.
Glad you enjoyed it. The score is on IMSLP if you'd like to play it yourself.
This sounds very beautiful. There's so much nice music, unfortunately, it's impossible to play all of it ...
Indeed, I have a sizeable stack of music that I very much want to record. It's a nice problem to have.
Lovely performance of a lovely piece.
Thanks. It is indeed beautiful writing - a classic.
Hello Erik. I just discovered and subscribed to your channel. It's impressive, with almost 1,200 videos! I'm friends with Carson Cooman, who just did me the immense honor of performing one of my pieces (STAY). When you have some time, could you give me your opinion on my Church Organ playlist? Thank you in advance. Yours faithfully JM.
Hi Erik. Is it possible to purchase the sheet music for this chorale prelude? Thanks.
Yes, it is in print from Zimbel Press via Subito Music: www.subitomusic.com/product/gibbs-complete-organ-music/ Lots to discover beyond her fine setting of Quem pastores, too. Erik
@@ErikSimmonsOrgan Thanks Erik. I've found it and ordered it :)
That's a very nice calm piece. Nicely played. Thanks.
Thanks. This is a particularly nice carol with a fascinating history.
A really fabulous performance, Erik! Thanks for playing.
My great pleasure. Thanks for the nifty writing.
BTW, I'm playing Broken Shimmers, Tragic Night on Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral for the annual PipeScreams fundraiser. It's suitably spooky music.
@@ErikSimmonsOrganThanks so much, Erik. Hope it is perfectly Spooky! Need to write some more like these.
When you start with a drone of the Devil's Interval, spooky is almost preordained. Yes, please - I'm particularly fond of these pieces that venture into complex harmonic spaces, even (especially) the 12-tone things you've done.
Brilliantly performed, thank you Erik.
You are most welcome.
Beautifully played, thank you Erik.
And thank you for the lovely writing as well.
I quite liked that one. Very nicely done.
Thanks. It's a nice, evocative setting - and not at all difficult.
That's so beautiful music and very well played. Music I love.
Thanks. This is a fine collection in Stevens's "home" style. It's lovely, effective music. He's a very talented composer; my personal favorites are his 12-tone pieces, such as the Shadow Suite I've recorded on this channel. They're wonderful, but a world away from this sound.
Happy feast of tabernacles
Thanks, Fred.
A brilliant work and performance, thank you Erik
Thanks, Bernard. It is lovely writing - something fresh for a familiar (and beloved) tune.
A very nice meditation about this well-known melody. Oh yes, Christmas is coming soon ...
Indeed, right around the corner. These are a bit "early" in one sense, but I know organists are shopping for new Advent and Christmas music now - and my channel stats certainly support that conclusion starting about a week ago.
@@ErikSimmonsOrgan Unfortunately, I have to disappoint you, you are not the earliest - 😉 Our shops have been Christmas cookies and sweet for weeks ... (It's not a joke.)
In that case, it's nearly as bad as "pumpkin spice season" in arriving so early. August - really?? 🙄
I adore Six Pieces for Organ by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins, this piece being the last entry in the collection. It's a pity that these pieces by Jenkins aren't better known. There are some real gems in here, any of which would work for a worship service or for a performance. Nicely played, Erik Simmons!
I totally agree. These pieces should be far better known. I've wanted to get back to record the rest, but somehow other music keeps popping up to record. Glad you enjoyed it. Erik
Thank you!
Always my pleasure. This particular work really embodies the Nordic aesthetic. Cold as ice in spots but oh-so-beautiful.
That's a fantastic piece and recording!
Thanks. It's on one of my favorite tunes.
Very nice!
Thanks! It's a nice collection of pieces.
Wow love it! Gonna order the sheet music - fantastic playing!
Thanks. I enjoyed playing this one quite a bit, which based on your comment seems to come through in the music. I'll be posting a few more from the book shortly.
very good!
Glad you liked it. Erik
Where can i buy the sheet music PDF? Thanks.
Much of his music is now available on IMSLP: imslp.org/wiki/Category:Benaut,_Josse-Fran%C3%A7ois-Joseph. My renditions come from the older printed edition by Barbara Harbach, which is still available if you prefer. Erik
Beautiful, I love the picture and the music is so harmonious and divine!
Please keep documenthing Siefert's work! It's amazing!!!
Yes, I should do the rest of the fantasias. He really does write well.
@@ErikSimmonsOrgan 🥰
Not a bad idea on the 3rd Verset, each hand on a different keyboard, Cornet and Cromorne, and Pedal with different stop too (Flûte, or Montre/Diapason).
Thanks. I think it works well. I've heard it this way before, so I can't take any credit for the approach. There are other spots in his writing where the same thing works too, so it's probably not a one-off accident here.
@@ErikSimmonsOrgan I agree, we are not yet in 'baroque style', but there is no reason to not play this Verset like a real Trio, especially when we have a disposable multi-keyboard instrument. I am working this Veni Creator, and after I listened to you I decided to play this Verset like a Trio too (roughly same stops as you, but I use the 'Voix Humaine' at the left hand, not the french Cromorne maybe a bit too loud for this piece on my organ). Greetings from France 🙂.
Lovely! 👍
Thanks. :-)
Brilliant!
Thanks. I'm happy you enjoyed it. I particularly like playing music from this fantastic, creative period.
@@ErikSimmonsOrgan And I love listening to it! Thanks again!!!
Оrgan is so beautiful 😍
Thank you. I'm happy you enjoyed it.
Thanks for this rendition of Ich ruf zu dir. It is perhaps the most similar to the version found in Solaris.
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely, somewhat forlorn piece, especially with that registration. I like that kind of ambiance. Nicely done. Thanks.
He writes very distinctive music. I've enjoyed all the pieces I've played from him (there's a playlist...).
A very lovely and quiet piece. I quite liked that. Thanks.
Thanks. It is quite nice, very evocative. If you like this, you might explore Carson's Eclougues. They come from the same general place musically.
@@ErikSimmonsOrgan Yes, I've heard a few of those and agree they are quite nice.
Beautiful harmonies!
Indeed, they are lovely. And I enjoy the limpid nature of the writing, as though one is lying in a meadow looking up at the sky on a perfect summer day.
Quelle beauté....
Oui, c'est vrai... Merci beaucoup!
Beautifully composed music, exquisitely played and recorded.
David has written many marvelous pieces. I hope you enjoy the entire playlist of his music on my channel as well. Thanks for commenting. Erik
Beautiful piece.
Indeed it is. It's always been a favorite.
Which Speakers can play this at the best?
It's uploaded in 16-bit wave format, so any good full-spectrum sound system should render it well. Typical PC speakers will lose the bottom frequencies, but good headphones or a stereo system should do fine. There is nothing below 32Hz in this piece, but many PC speakers lose frequencies below 100Hz. And of course we are at the mercy of RUclips and the speed of your connection to the internet for overall quality as well.
An excellent piece with its ostinato motif in the pedal.
Yes, indeed. Chauvet writes good music that should be heard far more often (especially with the Dubois "improvements" via editing).

Thanks for posting this. I bought a Heinrich scheidemann organ book a couple of years ago and I'm learning the songs in it. This sounds really good.
You are most welcome. Scheidemann writes very fine music, both chorale preludes and free works. I've posted several things on my channel, along with pieces from his friends H. and J. Praetorius, Weckmann, and Scheidt. It was a glorious time for organ music.
Love those big loud chords. Very interesting music. Thanks.
Thanks. Nifty writing from Carson, as always. This melody, along with two others, is used in Carson's Easter Soundings from 2019. There's a recording here on my channel, and here's a link to a live rendition by me at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral last year: ruclips.net/user/liveu2XoAsbwWo8?feature=share&t=4886
@@ErikSimmonsOrgan Thanks! I'll check that out.

Dear Erik. Thank you so much for your superb and virtuosic performance of my Organ Symphony No. 23.
It's my great pleasure. There is a lot of terrific music in this piece. The harmonies you conjure are exceptional.
