Well, a disgrace is too harsh, but it wasn't good enough, for sure. One thing I'm hoping to see us do is use the high press more, which should win us possession more higher up the pitch and also to deal with other team's high press, since we'll be practicing more. You defend more intelligently if you know the attack strategy yourself. But Paqueta has been poor with giving the ball away. If he's not with us, hopefully we have a player that can handle the pressure and provide the creativity.

@@iancarvell9926 it's not a yes or no answer - of course footballers can pass, the question is can they do it under pressure and enough to create opportunities to score. And the point is, 80% possession is useless if all you're doing is passing the ball around the back without being pressured because WH weren't playing the high press. The only game that really had me worried this season was Leverkusen first leg, where we were defending almost exclusively in our third for most of the game. It nearly worked, mind, but it was hard to watch. I think the key issue is whether the possession you have is the same as controlling a game. You can concede possession and still control a game. Ironically, that's a modern tactical concept and yet Moyes was called a dinosaur for implementing it. It's also a useful tactic when you know your opponent can hurt you if given space, so conceding possession is the same as taking that space away from the opponent to nullify their strengths, i.e. it's a good defensive tactic for 'smaller'teams to try to compete against 'bigger' teams. Absorb pressure and hit on the break and try to create dead-ball situations, where things even up between the teams.

@@512Squared it was a disgrace. Some of the stats I saw were beyond shocking. Least entries into final third, least pressing, most entries into our own box etc. It was awful. Luckily we had quality players that could drag us through.

@@adamnichols26 both of those stats you mention reflect a reluctance to engage in the high press, which also translates as a tactic to try to control the space. Yes, if you win possession higher up the field from engaging in the press, those stats go up, but not necessarily goals scored, because at that point, opposition are usually playing a low- to mid-block. You secede space when you engage in the high press and if it isn't successful you give the better teams too much space and they'll punish you. So, it's swings and roundabouts - don't think that any stat on its own tells the whole picture.

Let's hope he doesn't 70 plus goals conceded in a single season. I hope he can be better than that.

2024 Moyes delivered relegation form 16 points in 17 games was tough to take. Despite his achievements he won’t be snapped up by Chelsea or Man U or Brighton. He could maybe get a job at a Prem League club who needs saving from the drop or at a championship club who needs stability in my opinion that is his level and he couldn’t take West Ham into the top 6 regularly even though our team has top players. Thank you Mr Moyes for the Cup. Good luck but it’s time for a change.

Yep - it sure was. Allardyce couldn't understand why we booed during and after the 2-1win against Hull too. If JLo can get us out of our own penalty area next season, that will be progress.
