Restoring Hardknott Forest

Hardknott Forest is being restored to a native broadleaf forest of oak, birch, holly and rowan. In partnership with Forestry England we have a historic opportunity to create the largest area of semi-natural woodland in England as it links with the exisiting woodland in the Duddon Valley, Cumbria.
Using a combination of natural regeneration and tree planting, commercial conifer species are gradually being replaced by native trees. This improves the habitat and has huge benefits for wildlife.
We use remote trail cameras to film the wildlife in the forest without disturbing it, and we will share some of these, plus other footage from our activities on this project.

As a change from working at Hardknott Forest, this week we started removing tree tubes from a woodland creation scheme on a neighbouring farm.

The red deer at Hardknott Forest were surprisingly active last month. Always great to see them in action, although we are very aware of their impact on tree regeneration. (The camera date is wrong, this was May 2024).

What is the purpose of doing that?
This is a technique which kills a non-native tree without felling it. It provides excellent habitat, as well as improving conditions for native tree regeneration. See also video description. Thanks for your question.
