As a change from working at Hardknott Forest, this week we started removing tree tubes from a woodland creation scheme on a neighbouring farm.

Restoring Hardknott Forest: Red stags fighting

The red deer at Hardknott Forest were surprisingly active last month. Always great to see them in action, although we are very aware of their impact on tree regeneration. (The camera date is wrong, this was May 2024).

Our new thermal scope has been in action filming the bats at Hardknott Forest. Site Officer John Hincks has also added the sound caught on our bat detectors. We're running several bat walks this year, get in touch or sign up to the newsletter to find out more. Restoring Hardknott Forest: Roe deer on thermal scope

We've been trying our new thermal scope at Hardknott Forest. It'll come in useful for all sorts of mammal and bird monitoring work, but at the moment we're having fun getting used to it's features.

We are working with South Cumbria Pine Marten Recovery Project to return this missing species to South Cumbria. Once one of our most common mammals, habitat loss and persecution brought pine martens close to extinction. This video forms part of an evidential study of a potential donor population in the Highlands of Scotland. Bib markings from this type of footage helps identify the number of in...

Can pigs fly? (MUST watch to the end): Upper Duddon Landscape Recovery visit to Gowbarrow Farm
Просмотров 1779 месяцев назад
As part of the Upper Duddon Landscape Recovery project, some of the team visited Gowbarrow Farm near Ullswater to learn more about pig keeping. Sam and Claire Beaumont, who run the farm, have been switching from sheep to cattle and pigs, and trialling ideas such as allowing them to feed in woodland as well on pasture. This aligns well with nature friendly, low input farming and it's something t...
Among Stars, Starling and Star Jelly
Просмотров 1711 месяцев назад
After reading in our blog about the amazing natural phenomenon that is "star jelly" (see link below), local artist Nanette Maden invited us to her exhibition at the Wasdale Sawmill. We set up our stall and chatted about all things nature into the evening. Meanwhile Nanette's nature inspired artwork was on display, and we were treated to live music and delicious canapes. All in a days work for R...
Craig's Camera: Pine marten in front garden
Просмотров 402Год назад
For quite a few people living in rural Highland Scotland (and plenty of the rest of Scotland) the increasingly successful return of the pine marten means that sights like this are quite possible even in your own garden. Will we ever get to this point in Cumbria? Will we ever have a pine marten on a trail cam at Hardknott? We certainly hope so. Many thanks to our former staff member Craig, now b...

A quick clip of volunteers removing Sitka spruce to allow native trees to regenerate. We were finding plenty of willow and birch within the spruce thickets. Thanks to our volunteer Sarah for the video.
Back on our Map: Another contender for the world's rudest pine marten

This is a video taken during our pine marten monitoring visit to Scotland. Back On Our Map staff are now claiming they can train pine martens in where and when they can poo, to keep the forest from getting too messy. www.cumbria.ac.uk/business/projects/south-cumbria-species-restoration/

This is a technique which kills a non-native tree without felling it. It provides excellent habitat, as well as improving conditions for native tree regeneration. See also video description. Thanks for your question.
