      @@Leviajohnson long wheel base and the way the steering is setup. Its like having a 1.5ft long stem that u can move around at different angles called tiller steering. Also you can adjust the caster angle a little bit if u want it to pull to one side or the other.

      @ how do you feel about tiller vs tank steering? Having never ridden one my guess is that I’d prefer tank but idk

    • @Skisproductions
      @Skisproductions 5 дней назад

      @@Leviajohnson The only reason to choose one over the other is really just down to storage space and what position you would feel more comfortable in. Tank steering takes up space along the sides that you could otherwise use to store gear. I personally have only used tiller steering in my velomobiles however I would assume tank steering would feel very similar to indirect steering found on most high end trikes. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be more comfortable than tiller steering it would def be a more relaxed position. I choose tiller because I use the space behind my wheel wells to put stuff. Also when descending at high speeds it just feels right having my arms tucked in tight with the tiller. Here's my thoughts of the pros and cons when I was debating on whether or not to get tank steering. Tiller: Pros: 1. Sits on your chest so your hands stay warmer in winter time 2. Can operate all controls 1 handed with either hand turn signals, horn, brakes for both wheels, etc. 3. You can run a gps on the bars like you normally would on a regular bike. 4. Gives you more storage room along the sides 5. Can be operated 1 handed at different angles. Cons: 1. it's narrow so it tends to make ur chest feel compressed and tight however you can always set 1 hand off to the side if you feel this way and lean the tiller one direction or the other but you are limited to keeping it between your legs. 2. The tiller is in the way when getting in and out, sure you can stow it, but on the bulk the hood can get blown shut and the tiller can bend the hood in half, the tiller also doesn't stay up very well on the bulk, other models like my quest XS the tiller tucks away under the coaming so it's not in the way. 3. sometimes you get the tiller rubbing on your inner thighs, or have cables or zip ties grinding against sensitive areas. 4. on the bulk the hood can hit the tiller but on my quest XS the tiller tucks away and the hood can't touch the tiller. Tank steering: Pros: 1. Natural open chest, arms off to the side position 2. Gives you the option to have independent braking more comfortably meaning you can have each side brake independently of each other. this can help you make tighter turns. You can do this on the tiller but it takes up room on the already narrow bars. you can cut the stock lever in half down the middle but then you tend to not have enough leverage and your brake lights will only work if you press the right lever. 3. Offers a bar that you can put actual recumbent trike grips on, not just slip on grips. 4. You don't have anything between your legs. 5. Nothing to get in the way when entering/exiting Cons: 1. Takes up more space that you could use to store stuff. 2. Can't mount your Garmin to the control sticks with the mount that Garmin provides. 3. Can't access all controls using 1 hand. 4. Air down at your wheel wells tends to get cold in the winter time, and so your hands won't be as warm as tiller sitting on your chest.

      @Skisproductions oh, two front tires? I thought there was only one. Two front ties are totally inefficient. Any time they aren't exactly level, there is drag. You must notice that when you're riding on the roadside.

    • @Skisproductions
      @Skisproductions 28 дней назад

      @donbolin3450 u are leaning yes, inside my body leans to the left slightly. There is a certain amount of flex in the design to allow for some twist in the rear swing arm and u have suspension on all 3 wheels but no i dont notice drag because of it on smooth paved roads. All 3 wheels are sittng at the same angle so ur not riding on the shoulder of ur tires like u would on a road bike and each wheel wears evenly because the way weight is distributed. On a road bike usually ur rear tire wears out pretty quick cuz most of ur weight is over 1 wheel and u have to rotate the front and rear tires. In a velomobike u weight is further forward but u have 2 wheels sharing the weight so usually all 3 tires wear evenly. If they are not wearing even that usually means u need to do an alignment. I have the alignment tool and check it like once per year. The alignment tool mostly checks for toe. If u want to check camber and caster u need laser measuring tapes. Usually u want them in slight negative camber for added cornering stability u can check the camber with a laser level and tape measurer as long as ur on a flat level surface. You can adjust the alignment of the wheels in the front just like u can on a car u can adjust ur toe and caster/camber. They do have more drag that a 2 wheeled bike when riding on loose surfaces like gravel that i can tell u for sure because u are making 3 seperate paths thru the gravel and snow instead of 1. Same with mud. But on roads no. The aerodynamics are better than a regular bike so usually theres a lot less drag. Normal upright bikes when u get going faster u kind of platau where u cant go any faster even putting down like 250 watts. In a velomobile its like u can just keep going faster and faster. Ive beaten road bike koms just coasting down a slight gradient like -3%. Thats also why strava had to put in a seperate velomobile ride mode so velomobiles have their own segments seperate from road bike segments i screen shotted the strava kom i did 37.4mph doing 0 watts for 1 minute and 44 seconds. Cuz by default it does regular ride mode. But heres the link to that starva activity where i beat the kom of the road bikes in my area and i have some high speed clips on there as well one i was going like 56mph (its a 55mph zone). So no the 3rd wheel doesnt create more rolking resistance than what u gain in aerodynamics its also why the wheels are within the aerodynamic protection of the shell. They obviously have more rolling resistance but it really matters what tires u run cuz u are x3 rolling resistance not just x2. My current tires really create more rolling resistance wen temps are below 50f but it makes it so im stronger come spring time air is also a lot more dense when its cold out. 4 wheeled velos are probably the borderline where the extra rolling resistance starts reducing ur aero advantage. strava.app.link/KZr2QRLO4Pb

U do still need the side mount because in the location that u are supposed to run it it puts the transducer right over the motor and it picks up turbulence from the motor and when u spot lock the front end of the motor ends up under the transducer when it spins around to reverse. Also with the switchblade transducer mount if u have to do beach landings u can pull ur transducer up out of the water and also if u have more than 1 kayak u can just swap everything between the 2 just undoing the rail mount screws. Not sure if I missed it, but when you took the temp outside the visor, were you moving or stationary? If you were stationary, I could imagine the temp would be even colder while moving on an open bike due to wind chill.

    • @Skisproductions
      @Skisproductions Месяц назад

      @@danchaluejr i was moving while holding it out the visor. The temp doesnt change due to wind. Just like when the wind is blowing and its hot out, now ur body will feel colder because of the sweat it has on it and the cold air hitting moisture will feel a lot colder than it is. So the real feel would probably be a lot more different than the actual temp difference. I have never ridden an open bike in temps this cold. Ive ridden in temps just below freezing and what happens on an open bike is that the moisture in ur clothing freezes causing ice to form on the outter layers of ur clothing which eventually starts making the inner layers colder because it like forms a layer sealing in the moisture like wearing a plastic trash bag. I think i only did a 1hr ride b4 in below freezing temps and i wore a merino wool buff and my buff got frozen except right where my mouth was. Also its worth noting i felt so warm inside my velomobile i took my gloves off after i warmed up thats why u see my bare hands holding the thermometer later in the video. But i couldnt stop the visor from freezing inside from my condensation i will have to redo the weather stripping i did to block the air flow under the visor for these cold temps. Cuz the visor shrank so it no longer seals when i close it in these extremely cold temps. So i ended up riding with the visor partially open so i could see. Also i didnt even wear toe warmers on this ride. But if i was going for a ride any longer than 30 mins id def wear toe warmers on the top side of my socks over my toes in my shoes. I actually did that last night did an hr and 7 mins ride in power zone 2 it was approx 28f out last night with 20mph winds and gusts up to 40mph. I wanted to do a conparison in wind the bülk vs the quest xs. But the camera really doesnt show it well. Its more about how it feels than how it looks i guess.

I did try sealskinz overshoes which is what i wore b4 i got the sidi zero gore 2 shoes, and trust me u dont wanna sit there and struggle with overshoes every time also the overshoes are not as warm as real winter cycling shoes because regular weather shoes have vented soles and i tried using aluminum foil to block the air and inaulate and it worked a little bit but nowhere near as well as actual insulation. I know Alve Henricson told me he got a pair of cycling sandles to wear really thick socks like so thick they wont fit in shoes i forget exactly what he said he wore i think it was multiple layers of socks and a boot insulator. Just whatever u do dont buy the electric heated socks. The only drawbacks I see to something like a Velomobile, is the limitations of where one can go with it and snow. I can't imagine that they're very good on dirt pack that isn't smooth and I can't see them going through that much snow. If I were sticking to roads and went touring, I'd absolutely find one better to have than a standard bicycle.

    • @Skisproductions
      @Skisproductions Месяц назад

      Limitations of where you can go with it? If you mean like carrying it up stairs or taking it on trains/buses. Then I can see your point. They are not really too heavy they are more big an awkward to lift and carry but u can lift and carry them. But as for every day use like commuting they are allowed anywhere regular bikes can go and mine is narrower than my mountain bike handle bars so you can fit through or even under trail gates no issue. I mean you are not going to be riding double black diamond mountain bike tracks with them the rock gardens and jumps would probably destroy the body but idk I haven't tried but I have taken my other one on rocky fire roads which they actually redid so the game wardens can drive through easier.. But I have taken mine on light single track, gravel, and even through flooded out roads u just gotta watch the currents because the side has a lot of surface area. So I can assure you that it does fine on rough surfaces in fact here's me riding on a rough gravel trail and on a different ride I actually rode this trail all the way through which is a total of 60 mi fully loaded with camping gear. ruclips.net/video/rIUHMFLlJFQ/видео.htmlsi=ZQ01mSGPtiXwrzr6. But if you are looking to go off-roading or ride in slushy conditions then I would probably use my quest XS because I can put a 26x2.35 mtb tire on the rear as long as your drive tire has traction and you are not high centered you can keep going. I'd say it can probably ride up to 3" of snow pretty easily around 6" is the limit because it can't get traction and you will have to get out and push (speaking from experience) Usually I run slicks all year round even during this video with snow on the ground I'm running a 700cx28. It starts to slip if you put too much torque onto it. But you will not have to worry about slipping and falling over like you would on a standard bicycle. Actually it's quite fun to take it to a frozen parking lot and slide around. Also they make a model called the quattrevelo and a velonaut called Alve Hendrickson toured in the deep snow with it. Basically it has 2 rear drive wheels. Here's a short clip from his journey touring in snow ruclips.net/video/vMx7VBQuaFw/видео.htmlsi=62Y5SYAJzc9AZQJW So yes I can assure you velomobiles are good for winter cycling. Maybe not in really deep snow (cuz ground clearance) but to ride in that you'd need a mountain bike anyways and you'd be wasting too much energy trying to ride through snow that deep no matter what bike you are riding unless it's an ebike I guess. But you also can't ride a standard bicycle in 16F temps because your toes would get too cold. I personally use toe warmers when riding my velomobile. Just cuz the feet are the hardest part to keep warm while riding a velomobile. Once I was warmed up after about 10 mins of riding I was able to take off my gloves comfortably inside my velomobile no cold hands cuz they sit on my belly on the tiller steering and I can even operate it 1 handed braking and shifting with either hand and warm hands in my arm pits if I wanted to.

      Obviously, single tracks are not the preferred surface for velomobiles. An inch of snow works but my Quest eventually starts shoveling snow through the footholes. This is not an issue with velomobiles without footholes. Besides that, a velomobile is pretty much a roadbike regarding surfaces. The smoother, the better but a short stretch of gravel only slows you down, it does not stop you. The comfort and weather protection is always there.

    • @Skisproductions
      @Skisproductions Месяц назад

      @@christophvaneickels6660 Obviously a velomobile's home is clear dry pavements is where they excel at speed wise. But they can do the other stuff too just slower than they would on the road and I have done way more than short stretches of gravel talking 60 miles of gravel and others up to 15-20 mi through rough stuff some times even more with steep gradients I have the mountain drive on my quest XS so it makes steep climbing off road possible without it I would be spinning my rear wheel up the steep gravel trails. As for the snow shoveling into the footholes issue I use tub liner and tape it to the outside of my footholes on my quest XS. Unfortunately I could only buy it by the roll but it's 20mil thick. And you only need a small piece. That allowed me to glide over snow and also prevents the cold air from getting in and also prevents water from spraying in when you go through deep water. But removing them is a pita in the spring because all the tape residue. Usually like an hour out there scrubbing with goo gone.

      @swayback7375 velomobiles are primarily owned by older people, im probably one of the youngest owners of a velomobile last i heard i was the 2nd youngest owner lol. Most people just have a garage or a trailer so they dont have to lift them getting them in and out of storage. I use a trailer that way i have a mobile storage solution for traveling while having all my shop tools in the trailer. But idk ur medical issues or weight restrictions so i cant say for sure if ud be able to lift it but ive let random people lift mine to feel the weight when they ask and most people can lift it. But if u dont have back issues and can lift a small child then a velomobile should be liftable for u. Also its probably about as heavy as an ebike. However it is big and awkward u really gotta be mindful cuz if it hits something when spinning it around ur probably gonna scratch the paint or crack the carbon. If ud like i can probably do a video lifting it up 1 handed, but id advise against lifting up the entire velomobile 1 handed just cuz u wont have proper control over it especially if u get a gust of wind. But if u have a garage or trailer theres really no time where u would have to lift it under normal riding situations. When i ride my road bike, very rarely is there a time that id have to lift my road bike. Ive had to lift and cary my velomobile while out riding to walk it over downed trees on the trail but thats probably the only time. To turn around i got a handle on the back of both of mine and u just pick up the back end with 1 finger and turn it around walking around in a circle. And also u can pull it around by the rear handle so theres no need to lift it to move it around. Heck u dont even have to touch it just to move it around just give it a push and make sure it dont crash into anything. But i would also empty the velomobile b4 picking it up because that way u dont have stuff rolling around inside. But for the most part if i wanna go somewhere with my velomobile i just ride it there from my house. But i have picked it up and put it on the roof of my car

      @@A1-Odyssey the new one is holding up good. But ive been being extra careful with it. But they really do need to make it so thst u can disassemble and clean it that will be a permanent killer of this tripod. It didnt even occur to me when i 1st got it til it started getting hung up then im like well i guess i gotta clean it. Then realized u cant. I didnt try a pressure washer. But i reached out to small rig about how to maintain it and they basically just replaced it and never answered the question. It has no manual with it, thats probably the other down side. But i know they do intend on improving future models this is like their 1st gen. But im not sure how they will make it so u can disassmeble it. Unless the hydraulic hoses will have quick disconnects between the upper and lower parts of the legs. But the way they are made they designed to never come apart. I though they wouodve thought it through a little more than that. But at the end of the day as long as u keep it clean and away from dirty or sandy conditions u should be fine. Like dont deploy it in the mud, dont bring it to the beach or put it in the waves at the beach, etc. Still fastest setup tripod. But it womt last because theres no way to maintain it, so the whole thing is basically replace wen it starts getting rough. There originally was never any speed limits on bike paths til ebikes became popular like 10 years ago. Its because of them that there are speed limits on trails now. When u pass somebody going slow on the freeway do u slow down when it's clear to pass? No, you dont. U keep ur speed and pass. That being said i abide by the rules and laws of the trails. • @Skisproductions
      @Skisproductions Месяц назад

      @@Zoey_the_Rat they weigh about 50-65 lbs. So not really heavy more awkward to carry due to its bulky nature. Most people with velomobiles dont take them in and out of their house or apartments they usually have a shed or garage or u can rent a storage unit. There is a person that does take theirs in and out of their hous and they built a vertical storage stand attached to a hand truck for theirs to store it inside and easiky mive it in and out. I store mine in an enclosed trailer thats basically a mobile bike shop. U could just throw it on ur roof of ur car but if ur staying at hotels or camping at a campground and dont want somebody to mess with it then an enclosed trailer is the way to go. And impossible to commute on? Most people that buy velomobiles use them as car replacements and u dont have to insure or register them, unless ur local laws require u to register ur bicycles. So people do commute on them and i use mine for commuting too usually grocery stores are roughly 15 mi away from me and ive used my velomobiles plenty of times to get groceries. I even have a yeti cooler for when uts hot out to keep my food cold and i tow it in a trailer behind my bülk velomobile using a bicycle carho trailer. Now if ure talking about intermodal commuting where u commute via bus, taxi, train, or plane. Best bike for that is a brompton. As for price i specifically stated vs a brand new high end road bike especially carbon fiber ones. A new brompton c line runs around 3k, I cant guess what bike u have if its 13x the price of a velomobile u probably have some sort of walmart bike to be paying less than 1k for a new bike. Even walmart bikes prices are starting to get up around the 300-500 dollar range. Also how much do u think these velos cost? I paid 11kusd with shipping for the one in this video. I ordered a new one 2 years ago and got the most expensive options and it ran me around 14kusd shipped by air freight direct to a port in maryland from the manufacturer in romania. Now theres a dealer that imports them by the container full in mineapolis so u can save on shipping and import costs now. Plus theres more economy models available like the bülk 4 more which is heavier but cheaper cuz its made of fiberglass instead of carbon fiber i believe usually they run around 10k usd new. But im not 100% sure on the price as the dealer determines that unless u order direct from manufacturer.

The sales video suggesting this is something light, portable and mobile that you can use on 'adventures' it's simply not true. The fluid head has a great smooth action, but... its the only thing that is smooth! The gravity drop on the legs drop line stones, and because the clutch takes time to recover to the 'lock' position after you drop the legs, which means you need to press and then hold all that weight in position before it locks - it also makes making small corrections quite hard. I will give me a little more time... but first reation is... not great! I have decided... this is really just a gimic! I will keep it, but honestly... But yea uts a bit larger than i expected was suprised to see how tall it actually got. But my camera isnt all that heavy im using a canon r6m2 with rf 24-105 f4 lens, so probably 3lbs. I had my 1st 1 replaced because a leg cracked and i didnt even know it it just started sticking next thing u know it just breaks while moving it. But luckily it was still able to support weight and complete the shot. But they were gonna replace it when the legs started sticking. This is still a 1st production, small rig assured me they would be making improvements to the future models and they really want feedback from people who use the tripod so they know what they can improve upon.
