Nordic Sound #35 - Rúnahild Kvitbjarkan
patreon.com/nordicsoundchannel
Rúnahild returns to the Nordic Sound for the first time since 2022 to reflect on her journey as an artist from Wounded Healer, to her newest album Of Darkness and Light, in which she took a daring (yet successful) turn in her music style to stay true to herself.
"Rúnahild is a free spirited ethereal folk and folktronica project, hailing from an off-grid wooden cabin in the mountains of Norway. Inspired by her healing journey and spiritual connection to nature, her music aims to hold space for others to explore their own inner universe."

Midgardsblot 2024 - A Brief Retrospective for another Great Year

With a more eclectic lineup than previous years, it was hard to know what to expect going in to 2024. But, once you're on the grounds, you soon remember that Midgardsblot is so much more than just a music festival. And so it goes... Another year, another beautiful Midgardsblot festival by the Borre mounds, where the biggest drama was a guitarist not picking up his dinner plate ;) I look forward...

Hey man, Jan from Bærzerk here! As a smaller band we do really appreciate the fact we get so much support, and the chance we got to play at Midgardsblot at all. It was mind blowing when we got the news, we wanted to play there and we ended up doing that not even a year after first mentioning it (to me)! Felt absolutely unbelievable to play there. And I very dearly hope you liked our set if you saw us! This was only our 5th ever gig, so we still have quite a bit to go in terms of stage presence and such haha, but I try. Anyways great video, peace to you brother!

I grew up playing the fiddle in Potter County, PA. When i was a child, i remember my grandmother taking me to Ole Bull State Park. We climbed the hill to the ruins of his castle and I played my 1/2 size fiddle on the foundation of the castle as a tribute to Ole Bull and and my Norwegian influenced Pennsylvania fiddling roots and heritage.

54 minutes and half a bottle of wine later, I am loving what this is doing to my brain, especially with my brand of neuro spice. Classical music and soundtracks are a pretty big guilty pleasure of mine. Thank you for the recommendation. I have a couple favorites though. I love the weight that Region Smidur seems to put on your chest and how it just sits there and reverberates within it. But also, with Marie Louise. It is impossible not to listen to that one like a good story a friend is telling you after a long, tiring day.

As with any album review, I feel like I barely scratched the surface of all there is to love on this record, and will definitely continue to find more worth talking about with every listen. But at least for first impressions, what stands out to you about Keel Road? To me, I can't overstate how much the added vocal effects like the humming in Once a Shoemaker or the whistling in As I Walked Out make the album cozy and homely. Stood out at their concert here in Boulder too as a really unique thing for a string quartet to do \m/

  • @nordicsoundchannel

A few things I want to follow up on since the video was already long enough! 1. I love seeing all of the musicians support each other. I turned around during Lindy Fay's set to find so many of the other "house" musicians dancing to her music. That kind of thing happens all week long and it's so beautiful to see. 2. I want to make sure credit is given to some of the metal bands that really slayed - Inculter was straight up 1980s white sneaker thrash that was insane. Unleashed was one of (if not the) first "viking" death metal bands and they absolutely killed it, and Ereb Altor was the bathory-worship we all love. 3. I was really bummed that Gåte cancelled - you guys know I was probably most excited to see them out of anyone. That being said, Lumsk still filled in that folk rock niche VERY well. 4. It was amazing to see the potato stand got promoted to working up at the festival rather than in a tent by the campground. They deserve it and it made me so happy to see them brought back to the festival that way. All of the food is amazing but we all love that loaded baked potato ;) 5. And apparently there was a Norwegian/Americana band. I'm actually really bummed that Salig Syndere flew right past my radar, because that would have been RIGHT up my alley.
