Sailing solo from Falmouth to the Isles of Scilly in a Rival 32 yacht with a Monitor Wind vane.
Solo sailing my 'classic' Rival 32 from Falmouth to The Isles of Scilly in June 2019. On the return journey I had 20-30 knots of wind from behind. Ideal sailing conditions . I also briefly demonstrate how I set up my Monitor Windvane.

Here are a few videos of various sails during 2017. I sail a 41 year old Rival 32 from Falmouth Cornwall. I mainly day sail but try to get a couple of trips to The Isles of Scilly every year.

I had a rival 34! Hi James not sure how I stumbled onto your video. Ps love U2. I’ll wave next time I pass you!

Nice video but clipping on to the guard rails will not stop you falling overboard where you will drown. Clip where if you slip your tether will keep you onboard and not in the sea. Sail safe.

Lovely to see Large again - sailing as beautifully as ever (can't believe those stick-on boat names have lasted 30 years!)

Small world! I was watcher keeper under training at NCI Nare Point on the day you came back from this Scillies trip and watched you come up from the Manacles, past Nare Point and across Falmouth Bay losing sight of you as you past Black Rock! It was a cold wet blustery day with virtually nothing on the water, so tracking you visually gave me something positive to practice on! A year later, I move to Feock, start sea kayaking from Loe Beach and often pass Largo on her mooring !

Hi Max. It’s great to hear someone was keeping an eye on me out there. It gets a bit lonely out on the water out of season. Especially the other side of the Lizard. I have great respect for the NCI. Next time I’ll radio you or your colleagues and say hello. Cheers James.

@@JamesDavis-te6rc morning James! Due to time constraints caused by family commitments swiftly followed by lock down I was unable to continue with NCI, however whenever I’m passing in a kayak or my new boat I will always hail them! They are a very valuable and respected resource! Hope your season is going well! When you getting a passing wave from a Griffon named SETARA that will be me! I’m on a mooring at Loe Beach!

Which electric autohelm is that? I don't recognise the circular (apparently) shape.

    • @JamesDavis-te6rc

Autohelm ST 4000. Very old. Works well but gobbles up the battery.

@@JamesDavis-te6rc Thanks. I'd only seen the 1000 and 2000 before, but all three seem to get a lot of flak on forums. Nice to see an exception.

Yes. I purchased her from John 26 years ago. What a legend he is. John passed her on in great condition but since then I’ve got new sails, new engine, new standing and running rigging, I’ve rewired her and replaced some instruments. But there is still a lot of John Passmore left in Largo.

Such sturdy, fast and reliable boats. I crewed briefly on a Rival 41 in summer of '85. Southampton down the east coast there. Portsmouth, Weymouth, Falmouth, Devon, Salcombe. That Rival went on to cruise all the way to Thailand and back via Alaska to Annapolus, MD before she was sold.

Just subscribed so I’ll be waiting for more Rival videos please! Love the rival and would love the 32 or 34 but for now I’ll just have to make do with my Trapper 500!

Nice trip and well done on sailing solo. 👍. Just a few observations to help you be safe. I noticed that in wearing your life jacket the crotch strap wasn’t fitted correctly. For this to work correctly the strap needs to pass between your legs (eg under the crotch). If you don’t do this and your in the water, when activated the jacket would end up rising and not give you the correct support in the water. As someone else noted you shouldn’t just clip on to the life line when in the cockpit but rather a secure d ring properly mounted ideally in the cockpit and always clip on two points. Your harness should have a short line and a long one, hence when moving around the boat you are always clipped on and can move the other around. Hope that makes sense. If you only have one long clip on line and especially if it’s attached to the life line and you go over, while you will be attached to the boat you more than likely won’t be able to get back on board and could drown. Hope that helps.

Sailing well with some good breeze behind her and a windvane to take over. Scilly a handy destination for you, lovely place. I still have my Rival project, also about 25yrs now, progress still slow, I find something ready to sail every year. I blame it on the internet.

Lovely video, certainly brought back happy memories for me. I had a MacGregor 26M trailer sailer for nearly three years moored at Trevissome between Penryn and Flushing, just opposite the Premier Marina. My one trip to the Scillies was shortly before I had to sell her but it was delightful; I was able to run her up on the sand bar between St Agnes and Gju. I didn’t do any video but did a write up for the Owner’s Association for anyone interested - drive.google.com/open?id=192EeScE3qwiyv5zQW301zO6gbDKkgEFZ Thanks again for a super video, would love to have seen it while I was planning my trip.

That's a great write-up - lots of helpful, practical details but at the same time evocative of the appeal of the trip. I'll re-read it if I ever get to visit the Scillies in the Dragonfly - I plan to beach her somewhere, much as you did.
