Teen Wolf Too has earned a reputation as one of the worst sequels of the 1980s - and even one of the worst movies of the decade in general. But is the criticism justified? And how did the first Teen Wolf, powered by Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox, evolve from a simple teen comedy into a major box office hit?
In the latest episode of Sequelpalooza, we explore the rise of Teen Wolf in 80s pop culture, the impact of Michael J. Fox’s stardom, and why Jason Bateman’s Teen Wolf Too failed to cast the same spell on audiences upon release in 1987.

Teen Wolf Too is a guilty pleasure for me I actually enjoy it. Is it good? No. Is it terrible? No. It's biggest flaw is it's a carbon copy of the original plus, Bateman doesn't have the same kind of charisma as Fox. But no matter how bad TW TOO is I will gladly take it over the MTV "Twilight" Teen Wolf show.
My wife loves Teen Witch and watches it every October.
Teen witch is perfect. Thats all.
all of these movies just got major, if not HUGE, re-releases. Lost??
Love the only lasted 2 seasons ...... doesn't mention that was 65 episodes .... that a huge amount of tv exposure
Hey... Her head dont come off!! CHILLY DOWN WITH THA 🔥 GANG!!! 😜😂🤟🥃
At least Jason Bateman would have better success playing a furry 30 years later---HEYO!
I get that for the 2nd one, the kid's were too old. But, then they hire kids older than the kids from the 1st film were when they made the movie.
Very true!
My top five underrated movie from the 80’s!!! 5- SpaceCamp 4- The Last Starfighter 3- Iron Eagle 2- Lucas 1- Moving Violations
A really great list - Lucas is a brilliant film that nobody seems to ever talk about and deserved to be a much bigger hit! Thanks for commenting and hope you enjoyed the video 😎
What? We’re not gonna talk about the completely unconnected movie Teen Vamp from ‘89?
A true classic! Have you seen My Best Friend is a Vampire too?
Did anyone else not find the Bill Murray's role in Caddyshack funny? The dull-witted, mugging, cross-eyed moron archetype just falls flat for me
Totally understand your point, for me it's the fact that the lines themselves and interplay with other characters are good, and knowing that so much of it was essentially improvised off-the-cuff. But I completely appreciate that it might not work for everyone. Thanks for the comment and hope you enjoyed the video.
The Last Starfighter had an immense impact on me as a child. A poor boy dreaming and being passionate about one thing. Then one day it all pays out and he saves the galaxy. I watched it back then but forgot about it. Until 10 years ago I couldn’t remember the name. I too was gaming like crazy on the C64 and Amiga. Everybody told me to grow up and stop fantasizing. Go do construction work. Let’s just say they were very wrong. Never stop dreaming and give the middlefinger to the nay sayers. No matter who that is. You have one life. Don’t let anyone hold you up.
Very well said! Follow your dreams no matter what 😎 Thanks for commenting and sharing 👍🏻
Thankfully, labyrinth has a bunch of spinoffs, including a manga prequel!
Yes indeed!
MotU was the first time my young mind noticed how budgets affected a movie's storyline and plot. I wondered why we were only in Eternia for something like 5 minutes before the 'action' made its way to an empty high school gym and a music store and realised it's because it's cheaper
Very true 😂 It was so strange as a kid that barely any of the film actually took place on Eternia!
All of these are brilliant however I must admit I didn't watch all at cinema at time. But all are ace.
Completely agree - great films and a wonderful time for cinema! Thanks for watching and commenting 😎
Cannon Films was the world's greatest Ponzi scheme masquerading as a movie studio and I love them for it.
Oh definitely, the company was dodgy as anything but it wouldn’t have been the same without it. I was thinking about a deep dive video in to the history of Cannon, there must be some incredible stories behind the scenes.
I’ve always liked both movies
Wat aloser
23:35 rip Stewart
I just find it odd that this first movie and the third back to the future had crotch picking shots in them.
Fantastic vid as always from CS. Gotta give a hand to the scripts, as beyond being extremely well researched, they are very funny and narration is also excellent. Jason Bateman is well stacked in famous family connections with his dad being a Hollywood producer and his father in law being the singer Paul Anka who wrote the song 'My Way' made famous by Frank Sinatra. I agree Jason has proven to be a versatile actor and heading into this franchise was an early misstep. Enjoyed the montage - v generous CS! And also the look back at Rod Daniel's career and the fact he directed Like Father Like Son was part of a strange 1980s film trend: the body swap movie (Vice Versa, Big, 18 Again, Dream a little Dream) looking forward to CS's next video in time for the Christmas holidays. Please people like and subscribe and good to see the numbers getting high for the last videos. Hopefully when CS hits 10k subs we can vote on a video for him to do.
Thanks so much for the comment John, very kind of you! Really glad you enjoyed the video. 😎 Chuffed to get over the 2k subs hurdle, just need to keep on releasing videos and see where the algorithm decides to take the channel. There will be the Christmas ep and one more video before the end of the year. If the channel does get to 10k, I’ll definitely look to do something to celebrate. 👍🏻 You’re right, the body swap comedy was an interesting 80s movie trend - I remember loving Vice Versa as a kid but no idea whether it would hold up that well today. Maybe an idea for a future video in there somewhere? Thanks again for all the support!
Thanks for the reply - much appreciated CS. I hope you hit 10k and beyond as your vids are terrific. The lost blockbuster is doing well numbers wise, so you successfully hit a nostalgic nerve for some people. So can only wish you success and nothing less as you move forward. Thanks 😊
@@johnlad2198 Thank you so much John!
10:23 nu-uh he's not 38 years old. I'm 38 years old
I know...crazy right? 38 year olds apparently looked very different in the 80s!
Say what you want about this movie that’s fine but you can’t deny Jason Bateman is awesome in anything he does
Saw them all on HBO when i was a kid lol
Jason bateman was only part of the sequel because his dad was part of the crew of the movie. Jason’s sister Justine bateman worked with Michael j fox on family ties.
Yes indeed - he seemed to quickly realise it was a mistake too!
I'm sure if I watched Teen Wolf now, I'd think it would be terrible. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. However, I saw Teen Wolf Too when we rented it from the video store, and I knew it was terrible at the time. The original Teen Wolf seemed to be in constant rotation on our local Fox station as the weekend movie. Teen Wolf Too never was. Well done video. Your editing is on point, and the script is informative. I've subscribed.
Oh you’re right for sure, there is definitely some nostalgia involved in my assessment of the original film. It’s not really a great film or anything, but it’s fun, and Michael J Fox is a brilliant movie star. As you say though, there is no level of nostalgia that could make that movie enjoyable sadly. Thank you for the comment, sub and kind words Michael, it is really appreciated! Lots more to come from the channel soon 😎
Are university boxing teams even a thing in America? Kind of a weird choice of sport
It's the least believable thing in the movie.
I did think that too - looked in to it a bit and there is a legacy of unis in America having boxing clubs, and in the 80s some did even offer sporting scholarships for it…no idea if that is still the case nowadays though!
@@CultureSlice In my understanding, wrestling is much more popular as a university sport than boxing, though I guess maybe having a guy in a werewolf costume down on the ground grappling around with another wrestler was deemed insufficiently cinematic. Boxing isn't officially sanctioned as a sport by the NCAA, which administers collegiate sports in the U.S., but apparently there are a handful of schools that have boxing programs outside of the NCAA. I think a better direction would have been to make the second teen wolf a surfer or something, to give it a different feel from the first movie
@@sacvideo1998 Great info, thank you! A surfing werewolf would have been a cool twist for sure...
Harvard University have had a boxing team since 1874 and former US presidents like Theodore Roosevelt and John F Kennedy were part of those teams when they attended the University. I think using boxing with the knockout punch holds more dramatic value akin to the buzzer beater in Basketball. The Miyagi crane in Karate kid, Pele's overhead kick in Escape to Victory, Abrahams crossing the finish line in slow motion in Chariots of Fire: all 1980s sport films needed that magic sporting moment I guess.
Michael J Fox really has a charisma that can't be matched, Bateman does not fit that kind of character
Yep, Bateman was destined to fail from the beginning…Michael J Fox was just a brilliant movie star, one of the best.
If you can replace an actor in a movie so late into shooting and turn it absolutely around. You can make a movie with a ridiculous premise like Teen Wolf work. ❤
Nice
Fantastic video on Teen Wolf and its sequel. I'm embarrassed to admit i've never seen the Michael J Fox original movie or the sequel. I have seen the MTV 'reboot' tv series, which i personally liked alot. lol
Thank you so much for the kind comment! 😎 I would definitely recommend checking out the original film, it’s not a game changer or anything but it’s a fun movie. Don’t recommend the sequel too much though… 😂
Have you ever noticed how much of a massive rip off Mark Safin's Win in the End is of the Alpha vile track Big In Japan? It's so similar.
I had never connected the two but there are definitely similarities! Not a bad song to be influenced by I guess...
Another Spooktacular video from Culture Slice! 👏 Loved it and who doesn’t love a movie montage! 🎥 🍿 🍕👻🎃🎉 😎 Thanks for all your hard work! 👌Cant wait to see more from your channel very soon xx

Enemy Mine feels strangely like an adaptation/copy of the movie with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. Hell on Pacific.
I wished the Last Starfighter became a franchise.
Oh definitely, that ending set up a sequel so well too!
@@CultureSliceSequel yes; franchise, no. Look how many franchises have become dead horses and gone on to become total duds. I don't see how it could have been successfully expanded, I love this movie, especially Robert Preston!
@@ghw7192 Yeah that’s a fair warning - but either way would love to have seen a sequel!
Labyrinth is just 2 hours of David Bowie crotch shots.
A lot of 80s movies flopped when they came out but went on to be seen as classics and masterpieces of cinema. Especially when compared with all the wokeness and DEI in modern movies.
It is pretty mad to look at the 80s film that flopped in cinemas, across pretty much all genres - the competition was so tough and classics were being released seemingly every week!
i remember feeling like cinema simply couldn't replicate and harness the power of the sci-fi juggernaut if police academy was the best we could do. But DIE HARD changed everything
My god, Gene siskel had the ability to make the skin on your body melt away with just a few key strokes. others shout and use profanity to the point they cease to carry their value. he wasn't out to insult. he carried the tools to shatter dreams and he was especially insulted when wannabe's toured mt Olympus without making their mark. imitation got his attention quick and boy would he hunt these offenders down like they were the worst criminal imaginable. he didn't care if they were someone's son. they owed him a good time damn it and they didn't even try,
Beautifully put!
How insane is that top 10 from December 1985 at 33:12? I think Enemy Mine is the only movie on that list I don't remember.
It’s pretty crazy right? Feels like you could have gone to the cinema almost every weekend in the 80s and had a selection of future classics to choose from.
Masters of the Universe , is a guilty pleasure of mine….Mostly due to Frank Langella as Skeletor and Meg Foster as Evil-Lyn 😍😍😍
100% my friend - I ended up watching the full film quite a few times when I was editing this video largely for these very reasons 😂
I am a longtime fan of Caddyshack and I watched the sequel online to see if it was as bad as everyone says it is and the answer is yes.
Oh for sure - in fact I think it might even be even worse?! A total disaster 😂 Thanks for commenting 👍🏻
You're welcome!
I'm in my 50's and grew up with these films remembering the reports back then of them doing terrible in the Box Office, but love them anyway and have them on DVD, never getting rid of them.
Absolutely agree - physical media to keep forever. Thanks for watching the video and commenting! 😎
Once again, Rotten sh!sser and Dung Syscukold proved themselves scvms of the universe
I think what the people who made the He-Man movie forgot about was this: Star Wars was a hit movie, then it was toys. He-Man was hit toys, then it was a movie. That is not a formula conducive to success.
Maybe the cartoon version of Masters of the Universe is better, do not think we need a reboot !!!
Masters of the Universe, think its a cult film now, but Cannon made some bad choices regarding what they made, what others rejected Cannon funded, why? what did they see in it? Maybe it came out too early, look at the success of Transformers!!!
Regarding the last starfighter, why not felay the release , Crazy for a small film!!!
Video was far too long and why you think we need to know everything about the whys it happened is beyond me, could of been 25- 27, and i wanna know why?
Thanks for your comment, appreciate you watching and writing a reply 👍🏻
Labyrinth must have made money by now with all of the cable and then streaming plus all of the toy licensing that still seems to be going strong today.
Oh for sure - it’s difficult to get solid data on video/DVD sales but the second life it had in home media must have been considerable. Just a shame it was seen as such a box office bomb when it was released in cinemas initially.
Last Starfighter is so good. The idea of being so good at video games that you get recruited for a secret purpose is an idea still used in stories
Totally agree, The Last Starfighter is awesome. It’s such a simple but genius premise. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Gran Turismo did & was based on a true story. Though I am sure the idea probably came from viewing "The Last Starfighter".
Isn’t that also the plot to Enders game?
