5 reasons gaming was better in my day! #retrogaming #retrogamer
I want to talk about 5 reasons why I think gaming was better in my day. When I say my day, I am a child of the 90s which hopefully helps you think about the era of retro gaming I am talking most fondly of.
Do you agree or disagree with me? Let me know in the comments, but be kind, it's just a bit of fun and I am genuinely interested in your stories and opinions.

    Also, I miss when DLC was actually good and not content withheld from the main game strictly for the purpose of selling it later. Don’t get me started on battle passes. We are officially the elder gamers yelling at clouds, reminiscing the days of yore when gaming was so pure. 😂

    • @jaygrice
      @jaygrice День назад

      Agree with you on DLC. Games used to be measured on the quality of the additions the DLC made, now it seems accepted that no game is sold complete and that DLC is a path to getting more money from the consumer.

    Yes, I know Millennials and Gen Z kids probably groan every time they hear the old cliche that "things were so much better back in the day" but the truth is that in many ways it was and in others not so much, which I feel you've managed to convey very well in your video. Buying games was definitely more of a gamble in the early days of gaming. You could either wait for your favourite games magazine to review the games you're interested in or take a chance before the reviews come out and hopefully pick a sizzler, not a stinker. The first official "patch" I can remember was for Jet Set Willy and it was a couple of lines of code, published in Your Sinclair magazine that you had to type in to fix a game breaking bug which funny enough was also the way you input a lot of cheat codes, before Action Replay and Game Shark cheat carts were a thing. No one can truly understand the level of fun that can be had with couch co-op until they've played 4 Player Goldeneye & Mario Kart 64 #Priceless. I started playing games in the late 70s/Early 80s primarily on Arcade Machines where you had fairly short but enjoyable gaming experiences and I now find myself gravitating back to these simpler early arcade games for a quick fix of gaming, typically not lasting much more than half an hour. Yes, modern gaming has it's benefits and I enjoy playing the more cinematic AAA games when I have time but as we all know, time is at a premium and usually a quick game of Burger Time on my Evercade wins out :-) Great video Jay and keep up the awesome work!

    • @jaygrice
      @jaygrice 5 дней назад

      Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation. Completely agree with you, especially re short experiences when time poor. There is a lot to like about the modern gaming landscape, but there is something special about the classics. We are old, we are allowed to be nostalgic. Haha

    Im 56 and everything ! was better in our day. If you want to experience really painful load times you could always sit in front of a Commodore 64 the load times were chronic. Sometimes 15 minutes or more. And then the tape cassette would just stop because it was faulty, then it was back to the shop with it and they often wouldn’t replace it unless you could prove it was faulty, usually by trying to load it up on a machine in the store. But when all said and done it was part of the fun. We were pioneers.

    • @jaygrice
      @jaygrice 5 дней назад

      It definitely feels like we grew up as gaming grew up. The leaps from 8 bit to 16 bit to 32 and then 64 just felt so huge. It feels more incremental these days. Evolution not revolution. Although games are so incredibly complex these days in terms of how they are built.

    I was a big fan of Argonaut Games back in the mid to late 80s with the awesome Starglider & Starglider 2 on the Atari ST and Amiga. The story of how this small team from Blighty showed Nintendo how to do 3D back in the early 90s with Starfox was fantastic at the time. I'm afraid it all went a bit wrong for me when they moved onto console game development and more kid friendly games. With me being in my late 20s when I owned the N64, these games just passed me by. Great video though and keep up the awesome work!

    Great video and thanks for the shout out! Buck is a perfectly serviceable game worthy of a rental back in the day. I never made it to those later game levels, which look sweet. Never knew the developers were also behind Star Fox. Kind of like how Body Harvest was a precursor to GTA, developed by DMA. That is a rough play through but worth it for historical purposes.

    Great pickups and there's about a lifetime of gameplay in all those games :-) I do most of my collecting digitally nowadays, trawling the eShops for great discounts. I just don't need any more "Really Useful" boxes filled with physical games, lol. I still poke my nose into CEX occasionally and get the odd physical pickup which is still fun but as they say in the gambling sphere, "When the fun stops, stop" :-) Great video and keep up the awesome work!

      @jaygrice Месяц назад

      You make a good point. I know a lot of these games will probably only get a few hours of gameplay from me but I’m ok with that. I get the point re digital, I think the draw for me in the physical is being able to see them, pick them up, admire the artwork etc and just know I have them. Eventually I want a better way to display my collection but that will require more space too which I can’t do at the moment. Thanks for commenting as always!

    No need for it. If you already own a PS5 you’re better off just carrying your controller with you and using remote play on a tablet or laptop. The whole idea is to play away from the console which remote play already does, this just seems like a step backwards.

      You should pick up Wipeout Omega and dive in to a more polished and refined version. Wipeout is genuinely a great series and the music etc is worth it alone. I have never played Beetle Adventure racing or San Francisco Rush. Although I hear a lot of US RUclipsrs talk about the latter.

      I remember the first Wipeout quite well. It was one of the first games to have terrible “pop up” Then developers started to get a bit more from the hardware or design courses that got round the pop up issue. Although even today on modern consoles pop up is still a thing !

      I wonder if Apple through the Vision Pro may play a bigger part in this. As the devices come in more variants and price ranges in the future. The Quest 3 is a competent headset but the software strategy seems all over the place.

    Man. I played through this game so many times. I remember how sweaty my hands were by the time I got to machine gun Willy for the first time.

      The NES controllers were not that comfy in hand either so I imagine a few sores along the way.

    Nice video. I never played this game. As a kid, my brother and I had Double Dragon II and played the heck out of it. I don't think we ever beat it back in the 80's/90's. Had to use a game genie (or cheat codes...I forget) to skip to the last level and beat it as an adult. FWIW, TMNT III The Manhattan Project is probably my favorite beat em ups on the console...have you played that one?

      I had a TMNT on the NES but it wasn’t the Manhattan Project. Although one of my favourite games is the TMNT Arcade and Turtles in Time on the SNES. I have the Arcade 1UP TMTN cabinet too.

    Love Double Dragon and funny enough I decided to sell my Evercade Technos Collection 1 this weekend, which includes Double Dragon. For some strange reason this cart can fetch up to £90 and I was happy to accept £63 trade in at CEX. There's already plenty of other places to play the NES version including the brilliant Double Dragon & Kunio-Kun Retro Brawler Bundle. Great video and keep up the awesome work!

      Thanks for watching and commenting! How strange that you sold that bundle the same weekend that I covered one of the games.
