Hatch covers weren't dogged They had knocked a 20-ft hole in the bottom of the boat and it's last unload didn't welded up just throw the plate down and put on the taconite. Then got too close to six fathom shoals stabbed in the bottom of the boat from that minute on story was over. They found the Chadburn at the bottom of the lake of the Edmund Fitzgerald and its wide open full throttle

I am forced to confess that when I'm stressed, when my work exercising and training the saddle horses of the well-to do-no races this time of year-gets to be tiring, like a homing pigeon I come to listen to Jeff tell his tales of the ore freighters on the awesome Great Lakes. Looking at another video that’s come out in the last couple of weeks which contains testimony of a hullett operator who was at the last unloading before her final trip. On that occasion the hullett bit a 20ft chunk of plating out of the bottom of the hold which is also the tank top of the ballast tank. The dock supervisor offered to weld it back in place for McSorley but it would take about 4 hours. McSorley said no I gotta go, and he did with the plate placed back but unsecured meaning there was no watertight integrity between that ballast tank and the hold, it would be held down by the loaded taconite with the Fitzgerald due for dry docking at the end of the trip to be lengthened when presumably this defect would’ve been rectified as part of that work.

You get a "clean break" on cold, brittle steel, created using the bessimer process that left high sulfur content. Modern steel, like that used on the Fitz, would likely bend and shred. I think she was compromised and came apart on top, but didn't separate completely until hitting bottom.

No ship master can keep a boat afloat in a broken boat...the company knew the condition of The Bradley, the company risked the lives and lost the lives.

Boats don't stop working...that's why they go down..THEY SHOULD STOP WORKING, GET REPAIRED, KEEP WORKING.

You got rivets missing replaced by bolts and screws and YOU DON'T EXPECT THE SHIP TO BREAK UP IN A STORM????.... YOU HAVE TO BE STUPID TO ACTUALLY TAKE THE BOAT OUT IN A STORM...why do people continue to be surprised by deteriorating boats breaking up...I'm sorry but I'd just have to get FIRED because there's no way an INTELLIGENT MAN should put themselves in that position. Play stupid games win stupid prizes...what type of mentality do these men lack to KNOW A BOAT IS IN PATCHED TOGETHER CONDITION AND STILL GO OUT....I don't feel sorry for them...they seem kinda...DUMB.

JEFF THOMAS is my very favourite Great Lakes Shipwreck Storyteller. I like Ric Mixter ok...but IMO Jeff is much more personable...a Natural -Born Storyteller.

I would like to thank everyone involved in this presentation ending up on here, for just anyone to see. I appreciate all the history about the great lakes I can find. Spend a lot of time up around, and sometimes out on Lake Erie. I love the history of the area. For some reason, I am really interested in maritime history, even though Im not a sailor, nor have I ever been.

Why didn't Captain McSorley go to the downwind side of Caribou Island , drop anchor or beach it?

If the Fitz nose dived and hit the bottom in one piece; dont you think taconite pellets would have slid forward and would be scattered all over the front of the ship? She dumped her cargo before hitting bottom. The hull finally gave up from the hogging and sagging with all that water inside it. She only had 3 bulk heads, unlike every other ship with 5. The Fitz was fragile and a ticking time bomb.

Captain Mcleod was the first captain on the L.R. Doty and he went down with the Marquette & Bessimer no. 2. The LAST captain of the L.R. Doty, before it was scrapped... Ernest Mcsorley. The Doty was both captains first job as a captain. Kind of a crazy fact.

JEFF THOMAS must be a fascinating teacher. His wry, humorous delivery keeps listeners caught up in the moment. As a junior in high school, MY History teacher-who, coincidentally, WAS named Mr (Jeff) Thomas, sadly did not possess THIS Jeff Thomas' engaging form of delivery. Who am I kidding? Mr. Thomas, my high school teacher could send a glass eye to sleep!!!

It’s strange to me this is the only ship that’s not allowed to be dove on. If I was a family member I would want to know what happened so maybe it wouldn’t happen to somebody else’s loved ones Personally I think those ships were built too long for lakes and the storms they have there. Being so long looks to me like it would make them easier to break in the middle

The more I listen to the evidence, the more I think a couple of the theories played out. The boat began to break up. Captain knew it was going down. Propped the door open for a fast escape. Got caught by the 3 sisters that passed the Anderson, they hit the Fitz and caused it to dive. Hit the bottom and the already broken hull shattered from impact. That could explain why there was no ore in front of the cargo. It already partially spilled out while she was on top. Something with its different bulkhead design kept it attached on top and allowed it to dive. Captain never got a distress call out because, like the Morrel, she lost power from breaking on top. That's my theory anyway.

It's a shame the engineers weren't able to keep the stern half moving all the way to shore.

So when was the EPERB implemented? If this was 1966-67; I don't recall there being one on the Fitz...?

Its possible that the crew went back on deck to "fix" hatch covers at some point and left in a hurry, not re-securing all the locks. Why else would someone be trying to go on deck?

Doesnt sound like a whaleback ever sank because of the design. It was all bad decisions.

What about the Pere Marquette and Bessemer #2 ??? She was lost in Lake Erie in 1909 in a storm. Another Holy Grail ship that has never been found

The James Carruthers is the Holy Grail of Great Lakes ships gone missing. She was lost in the Great Whiteout of 1913. Why hasn't she been found???
