USS Los Alamos Tour 1989
Просмотров 8 тыс.8 лет назад
A narrated 14 minute video tour of the USS Los Alamos in Holy Loch Scotland, produced by Frank Gosselin in 1989. The video points out the changes that were made to the Dry Dock's engineering spaces during a major shipyard overhaul that year.
Daddy, Commander Gunn, was QA officer on the Lake in '66 to '68 at Holy Loch. I spent many a Friday and Saturday night onboard as a 12 and 13 year old tweenager.
From the football fixtures on the radio, this was actually 13th December 1986. Hearts bear Hamilton Accies 7-0 that day, in one of the matches being previewed.
Nothing has changed much… The Bay Hotel is gone and it’s nice to see Gourock is still largely unchanged!
We loved the folks, hated the weapons on the ships and subs. But the British navy was just around the corner, and equally armed to the teeth. Jeff Sheffield, Mark Parley, big Ron Murdoch...where are ye? :-)
74 to 78 submarine duty. Fish and Chips were great.
Was on the Slimey Lake in Kings Bay. Great Crew!!!
Someone commented that it was a great time. Not sure about that one. Ha! That was 1967-1969. Was on the 600 boat and we hit a miss charted underwater mountain! Not too fun. The people in Danoon were nice. Drank my dolphins there. That was fun. The girls in Glasgow were…..well that was fun too.
My old stomping grounds, I will definitely be returning sometime
My old stomping grounds, I will definitely be returning sometime
Bring back memories,I was there in 84-86 great times
I check in onboard in April of 1983! It looked like that when I arrived!
Jerry Lambertson was on the Dock part of 62, all of 63 and part of 64, ran the boat shop charlie section port side and helped rebuild one of the diesel generators down below, some good times🫶 aboard and in town. Remember some really bad weather we had in the Loch, force 8 winds coming down from the north, wow, thanks for the memories.
shithole..
I tried to drink the place dry every trip but never succeeded
I was in Boat Operations driving the liberty boats and work boats from 1985 to 1988 would love to have someone post some video of the barge !
Was stationed there 86,90
Wow! I was there. USS Hunley. We had arrived in January. Good times…
I came onboard Hunley at the Charleston weapons station in late 81 and was mess cranking on the trip to Scotland. Afterwards, I worked in the Rubber and Plastics Shop, 57B I think…. I wonder if anyone remembers the night we had 140mph winds? One of the subs jumped over the bumper things and caused some flooding.
The front of Gourock hasn’t really changed that much. Most of the buildings are still there today.
Frank are you an American per chance? Did you go to St Ninians school? Or have a son that went to St Ninians?
My son went to St Ninians
@@frankgosselin6075 I remember him well. He was in my young brothers class. They were good friends if I remember rightly. You have a daughter too if I remember rightly? Which I often don’t.😂 I don’t want to mention her full name but started with Ch right? Your son must be around 43ish and daughter 45ish? I remember cuz my brother was friends with Frankie and I was a year above.
Yes, that is correct. My son lives in Ohio and my daughter lives in Oregon. You can see more of my videos at rumble.com using my name in the search. I will let Frankie know about your brother.@@BeneathTheGold
What a Jem
The US Navy were very sadly missed when they eventually pulled out of the Holy Loch, I’ve heard nothing but positive experiences by those who visited or were stationed there. Glad to say the US Navy are regularly visitors to HMNB Clyde and are always welcomed in Scotland. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸
Early 70s maybe late 60s uss wasp visited the river Clyde just off Gourock Scotland I was lucky enough to get a guided tour of the wasp which the US navy gave to local people but I can't remember the date ? Anyone know the wasp was a massive aircraft carrier
Good days and good days look what we have now crap we had a boat and would have a party go down there now you have a chance to get shot or robbed or both
What happened to the Box Ls? I'd would have taken one home, but it wouldn't fit in my sea bag.
Was here twice. Rained sideways both times
The absolutely best era in the Flats. The new "junk" will never compare. The Wolsteins ruined it with their money and vanilla results.
a reminder of one of the great places I had the opportunity to go in 1987.
Wow. I was on the Simon Lake arriving that day. I was in the Radio Shack/comm center RM3
Health and safety were obviously just random words that had never even been in the same sentence before when this was filmed. I miss this type of thing, just take your chances in the back of a Bedford TK and hold on 😂
Just passed my test in 1987, I don’t remember how quiet the roads were. Mostly British built cars then - Ford and BL, or Austin Rover or whatever they were calling themselves at the time.
I remember, back in the 60s, when the first Polaris sub turned up in the Holy Loch. Fun times.
I served on the Simon Lake starting in July 1987 as a storekeeper. This video brings back memories.
Any one know if it's possible to find competition results from 1982/1983?
Docked in her aboard 620G in 88. Hard sledding back then, but it was a good dock.
620G from 86 to 89. I still remember those beat up Aggreko diesels for shore power alongside the drydock. There's a $97K FRV tender supply dropped in the lock for us if anybody thinks they can find it.
Thank you Frank for sharing this video, it sure brings back old memories mostly good lol.
I was on board the Dry Dock in 74, I was HT and also operated the cranes, Wesley Owensbee was my signalman. Leroy Holcomb, David Gadsden, Wally Walrath, Sam ?, Rico, Speedy Gonzales. Many many others we all had the time of our lives. The births were always covered in blasting dust and grit until they changed to water blasting or hydro blasting in late 74.
I went aboard the AFDB-7 May 1974 had an absolute blast. I operated the crane with "RICO" and "Speedy Gonzalez" I was not an EM I was an HT, Wesley Owensby was my signalman he was a deck ape BM. David Gadsden, Leroy Holcomb, Wally Walrath, Sam ?, and many many more Gershen, and Skid Box. Phillips EM Crane Operator came from the DD-881 USS Bordelon that I went to in 1975.
My first two refits on Lewis & Clark ("M" Division!) were at Holy Loch in '78. USS Los Alamos was an impressive sight. I see in the Wiki page that it had its own crew of about 150? What was its total installed electrical generation capacity?
Great video and memories. I was stationed on Tug Saugus from Feb 85-Aug 87. Seeing the tug in dry dock brings back memories when we were in there, probably 86, man, climbing the scaffolding after a night in town was tough. I loved it over there, still keep in touch with a few of my Shipmates. I even miss the horizontal rain.
A lot of changes in only a few years after I left. The change to electric heat and removing the boilers was something I never knew until just now. I was onboard April 83 to November 85. Worked in all 4 engine rooms at one time or another. Thanks for the memories!
I just published a book about the HUNLEY AS-31 in Holy Loch Scotland 1963 My book is called Sobriety Castle the fall and Rise of Stuart Macpherson alcoholism is a lonely DEMON. The U.S.S HUNLEY AS-31 is on my book cover. Google it. It just came out a month ago.
Will Gerhart, was stationed there 1972/73. Anyone seen him?
A wonderful duty station I reported on board in 1962 five days after I finished high school and spent two years as a crane operator. When I left the Navy I became an airline pilot and flew many trips from ORD to GLA and London. Flying over Argyle and Dunoon was great and gives a much different View then from the Holy Loch. Operating the cranes was much like flying without ever leaving the dry dock. The people were wonderful the scenery fantastic and Blacks of Dunoon bakery was the best. I have gone back many times on vacation and find the lack of the car ferry directly into Dunoon sad. The dock was scrapped after it was towed home. This video is a great memory and it is amazing how the dock was upgraded after I left.
Not scrapped. Supposedly still operating as a drydock in Brownsville, Texas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Alamos_(AFDB-7)
@@valdiviacchi it's true. Of all the boomers and tenders the only thing that remains is the Dock!
Not Marlene Brown, her Husband Carl j Brown I Was assigned to AFDB-7 1963 to 65 Deck Department, my first duty station out of Bootcamp I ran Boats and operated Gantry Cranes Retired Master Chief Boatswain.
I was on the Los Alamos from 1974 to 1976. I worked in Dog E/R (we never called it Delta back then) except on duty days when I operated the Starboard Crane. Lots of changes from then to 1989.
God that was so much fun and so many people out partying. I did go to the flats clubing in the 90's and it was fun but i think back in the 80's was even more fun.
I was assigned to the dry dock September 77 for 2 years , my 1st command of which I enjoyed immensely and will never forget. My rating was boiler technician. My question ; what happened to the four 125 psi auxiliary fire tube boilers, of which my responsibility laid , that provided hotel services to the dry dock?
The Dry Dock was upgraded in the late 1980's to 550KW Generators to handle electric heat throughout the dock. The boilers and steam systems were eliminated.
@@frankgosselin6075 Thanks Frank , Steven Franklin here in Chicago. Thanks for the info on the once on-board boilers , they were my puppies. And thanks for great efforts you put into that footage of the dry dock virtual reality tour. It brought back such rich vivid memories of the comradery that I had with my shipmates at my 1st command. Thanks Frank.. .
Spent a little time in AFDB-7 while getting our battery changed out aboard Ethan Allen, SSBN-608, in the late '60s. Never got to saw the interior of the dry dock except for an MG set room. Great tour!
