How To Play A Minor Inversions (Triads and Sevenths)
Learn how to play your A minor inversions as triads and seventh chords in blocks and arpeggios. These are the building blocks to all things singer songwriter producer on piano and will pave the way for more interesting songwriting moments, studio sessions, performances and overall joy and fulfillment on the piano.
Once you get them down in A minor, compare the sonic difference to C major. You should hear a big difference between major and minor key signatures. If you can get these concepts down in C and A minor, you are well on your way to being able to add sharps and flats and learning more advanced chord structures.
Have fun and good luck!

im a saxophone player that decided to start playing piano. And ur the best piano teacher ive seen on utube but i just wish u highlighted the keys.
Thank you! Is this because you still working on learning the white keys?
Adult learner here. I started playing keybaord two years ago while my trumpet was being cleaned and repaired. So far really love the few fun chord exercises you have taught through the videos. I also like that you want to bring something new to teaching rather then just a standard curriculum. While I appreciate all the amazing classical pieces, I much prefer pop and jazz. As an FYI, my progress is always very slow, the journey is great. Hoping to learn some other new cool excercies and tips that will help to just be a better player. Continuing to learn theory and reading music to keep my brain sharp in retirement
I love this and I’m happy to hear it! I learned recently through someone who studied neuroscience that music, art and dance are the only things that light up every part of our brain. Songs get stored in the cerebellum so people with dementia that cannot recall facts or memories can recall songs. Powerful stuff ✨
Congrats on hitting 1K subs, Keira! Loved the sneak peek at the end, I'm so excited for what's to come 😊♥ Now I'm off to practice 🎶
Thank you! 🥰 Glad you’re enjoying it so far 🎹✨
Hi I love your teaching style. Is it possible to play a little slow. I m begginner 😇❤🙏🏻
Hey love, this exercise is for people who already know their white keys and triads well. You might want to start with triads first: ruclips.net/video/zLYdxiyDdhs/видео.htmlsi=QMIdr0MM6vyf-olf
@@ModernPianistaFor sure. I will watch it once again. Actually I'm not stranger to piano. I can play a little. But I have difficulty using both hands. 😊. And other problem is it doesn't look well which keys you are pressing. If you can add some equipment it would be better. Thank you again for your effort for us. 🥰🙏🏻
I really appreciate the way you teach step by step it makes it easy to follow 🎶🎶😊
Thanks so much 😊
Really like your style of teaching in these videos. The 7th chord inversions with octave in bass is a cool exercise and challenge. I've been trying to use inversions more when I play songs (beginner so they are easy books but still opportunities!). I've been using the hop scotch exercise for warm up after I do a warm up on trumpet.
Thank you! I’m glad the exercises and warm ups are helping 🎹✨
Really appreciate your teaching style. And, apropos of nothing, you have lovely hands. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! btw If you do a series on the singer/songwriter method, sign me up!
Thank you so much! This channel is dedicated to helping singer songwriters and producers specifically so you’re in the right place! I’m in a soft launch as of right now, but I do plan on releasing courses in the future so stay tuned 🎹✨
Wow! 😮😊
Amazing! But what really are arpeggios?
Arpeggios are chords played one note at a time! Music terms are in Italian 🇮🇹 Arpeggios are really beautiful and it helps to learn them first if your fingers are getting acclimated to the piano.
These videos are amazing! I just started my journey to learn piano and was feeling completely lost on where to begin. Your approach is clear, practical, and exactly what I needed to make progress. Perfect timing-thank you for creating such helpful content!
Thank you! I'm happy to hear that it's helpful for you.
Nicely explained ..i am also preparing the same
The hop scotch and lullabye exercises are really fun.. 7th chords...another animal!! Thanks for the great videos.
@@MikeM91320 Glad you like it!
Me again, reviewing some theory for the algorithm ♥ I'm gonna build on my comment from the previous 7th chord video /* Review */ Diatonic 7th chords in C major: Cmaj7 - Dm7 - Em7 - Fmaj7 - G7 - Am7 - Bø7 (half-diminished) Chord degrees for the most common types of 7th chords: * maj7: 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 * 7: 1 - 3 - 5 - b7 * m7: 1 - b3 - 5 - b7 * ø7: 1 - b3 - b5 - b7 * o7: 1 - b3 - b5 - bb7 (fully diminished; the 7th here is double flat 7, i.e. scale degree 6) /* New */ Here's how the consecutive thirds add up to form a seventh chord (which always spans the musical interval of a 7th in close position) * maj7: M3 + m3 + M3 > P5 + M3 > M7 * 7: M3 + m3 + m3 > P5 + m3 > m7 * m7: m3 + M3 + m3 > P5 + m3 > m7 * ø7: m3 + m3 + M3 > d5 + M3 > m7 * o7: m3 + m3 + m3 > d5 + M3 > d7 M major m minor P perfect d diminished ✨Bonus: Shell chords Shell chords are formed by removing the 5th of a seventh chord, since it provides no information as to whether a chord is major or minor (the first third is what determines this quality of the sound). The resulting sound is more open and leaves more space for other instruments, including voice.

Just giving positive feedback. I'm now 3 mins in and you keep repeating the same point over and over. I've been waiting to hear what to do when perfectionism gets in your way and I haven't heard anything yet, just the story about your journey. Maybe write some things down so you're not just "winging it" when talking. Wish you all the best with your channel.
@@cali3168 What to do? Face it. Do it fearfully anyway. Allow people to see you throughout your imperfections and you will grow 👍🏽 which is what I’m doing. Yes, this channel will be about my journey.
Great video. I tried learning a song with the notes dropping down and did not care for that at all. Love the chord idea and I discovered ultimate guitar which has lots of songs with just chords. I also look for lead sheets which has been a great way to learn to play. Learning by ear is harder so I appreciate your example.
Thank you! Understanding chords and music theory would be the best approach to start with first if you're interested in learning modern styles of music. The notes dropping down do not teach you the language of music, which is why I do not recommend it.
Great info…keep it coming! 🔥

Hello, Im planning to buy my first piano and play to learn it as my first music instrument. This all look overwhelming to me but I am willing to learn it with baby steps style.
That’s amazing, I hope my tutorials can help you along your path! Make sure you watch this one: ruclips.net/video/BGxp3H0MH8Y/видео.htmlsi=SVNvbl94RrpKbkpo This one talks about the different ways of approaching songs on the piano. Many people aren’t aware of this and can get caught up taking the long route to their goal! Good luck ~
Thanks. God bless you. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and, thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 16:31
I'm a "self taught" individual (cant even call myself a pianist) that only really learned the basics of note reading (literally just what each note means), and what it goes to on the piano. As i've been trying to unlearn my bad fundamentals and get a more structured understanding of stuff, your content is answer my questions in just the way I need and is helping me understand so much I couldn't quite "get" in other books or even beginners piano books. Keep it up!
Hi have you tried the faber adult piano adventure books? Their pace is pretty good, all their songs provide fingerings and they go through most of the fundamentals. They are perfect for beginners

Thanks love! Looks like you know your stuff 🤓
Thank you 🎹👍
very methodical teacher! Loved it! Thank you
I'm an older person...I'm just starting piano (and clarinet too)...so far I've really been only seriously doing finger exercises, I do have an instructor but he's trying to teach like I'm 60 years younger (twinkle twinkle little star anyone?) I do want to have the left hand developing at the same time as the right so I'm pushing to learn chords. What order do you suggest I watch your videos? And how long should I stick with one before moving to the next? That exit noise is obnoxious imho.
@@timothytapio4252 Hi there! Starting out with all the exercises on this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLYzKjO1RDAF3kvM8cEs23ZXArNIok24px&si=720fnPvyLy7DM4Gp would be best to escape the ground up approach of nursery rhymes and sightreading that tends to be common in traditional lessons. All songs are rooted in scales and chords so start with triads and do one hand at a time if needed before putting them together. Haha sorry you don’t like the exit music. This is an older video. This channel however, is geared towards recording artists, singer songwriters and producers with a modern approach. I make beats so there will be a lot of that on this channel!
@@ModernPianista I'd like to see a playlist in order...hopscotch, lullaby, etc...the one listed starts with inversions but refers to hopscotch which is several videos later...
@@timothytapio4252 Great point. I rearranged the videos to be in the order you should start in. Start with Arpeggios because it is learning your Triad chords one note at a time. Then playing them in Blocks would be great as your fingers get stronger. Scales can be done anytime. Starting with C and A minor would be best. Learn RH first and then incorporate LH octaves. Hope that helps!
@@ModernPianista thank you very much!
Great video. Learning to read music from the start would turn a lot of people away.
Thank you so much! Absolutely agree. It definitely needs to be incorporated, but should not be the main focus imo unless you are specifically after classical pieces only.
super nice, I am brasilian and I have liked a lot your videos , however my english is not good to get it everthing, but it is helping me ...thanks
Obrigado! 🇧🇷 Sorry I don’t know much Portuguese hehe. Glad you can still find value!
Another great video, Keira! I don't know if this helps anyone, but in order to practice ear training/ relative pitch, I've found it useful to sing along to (or think of) the notes while playing: do - re - me - fa - so(l) - le - te - do 1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - b7 - 1. Some people prefer singing the scale degrees, but my preference goes to (moveable-do) chromatic solfège.
Singing definitely helps! Whether it’s scale degrees, solfège, finger numbers, rhythm or lyrics, I highly recommend singing while playing ❤️✨
Plus it’s a ton of fun 🤩
