Rev Up Your Life: How Anyone 40+ Can Master Motorcycling & Never Quit!
How to start riding motorcycles in your 40s and not quit. I'm 2 seasons in after starting in my mid forties. Sadly, many new riders in our age group end up quitting and selling their bike. I think some of them could have been "Saved" if they managed their expectations and were prepared for the many challenges ahead. This video is an attempt at a little "eye opener" before you start riding.

So do you feel like you might have been able to learn faster and better on a smaller cc? Im buying my first bike too.
For travelling have a look at the kove 800, its like the tenere world raid but with 94 hp and much less weight (25kg)
The older Tracer 900 GT (2019) is pretty comfortable in comparison to the XSR/MT bikes
Maybe there is an option for a comfortable seat on the Tenere? Official or unofficial.
Yeah, a tall and wide comfort seat is just what I went for 👍
Have you considered the vmax. A cruiser will keep your legs in a more straight position, or maybe try a tmax good seat and good leg room. Hope you find your dream bike.
Never tried it, but it looks very comfy! 👍
😁💯teşekkürler
👍😁
@TalkTheRide Do you have instagram
Greetings from Scotland. Love your content and honesty. ❤
Thank you, David! 🙏👍😊 I'm really looking forward to next season, I love making these videos 👍🎉
I’m shouting at this video saying “change gear, change gear, CHANGE GEAR!” You’re holding onto the gears for too long at too high revs. I can’t believe you got so far down the road before realising your front wheel was back to front. Who did the PDI?
I like revving it a little, the throttle is so much more responsive in that higher power band 👍. It's a Yamaha, it can take it 😄
Great video, it's not a Hog, a Harley is a Hog.
@@jeffslade8621 thank you! Glad you liked it🙏👍 And duly noted 😁
@@TalkTheRide Hog means - Harley Owners Group.
Hey thomas how are you ?.. i know its not bike weather now but are you ok and keeping busy .. Id still like to hear a vid from you .. about you , your life etc .
@@davecrewe9074 hi Dave, thank you for checking in 🙏👍 I'm ok over here, planning for next season and trying to stay warm hehe. I tried doing some walk n talk videos last winter , but it didn't turn out so good hehe. I might try again !
@TalkTheRide ok as long as you are good.
🙏👍 hope you are well too!
Just checking in Thomas How are you ?.
I'm doing ok, thank you Dave 🙏👍 Better than last winter. It really helps having next season to look forward to 👍 Hope you are well too!
Hey Big Dawg, long time, no post… just checking up on you, Thomas. Let us know you’re doing ok.. praying that you are 😬
Hey buddy! Thank you for checking up on me! 🙏👍😊 I'm alive and kicking over here in winter Norway 🇸🇯❄️🥶 I'm planning for next season , will be back with more content in May 👍
@ that’s great to hear, maybe post some winter, Talk the Ride and show us what you’re doing to prepare for next season or just to get a look at that beauty of a Tenere, waiting for Papa to take her out for a ride.. stay up, and don’t let them winter time blues drag you down, I’m here for ya
I wish I could, but the underground garage I rent my space in... It has the Jeffrey Dahmer lighting scheme installed 😁 looks horrible on camera 📸 😌
@TalkTheRide bwahahah lets not go there, shall we 😅
I really liked this video! I currently own an z650 restricted to a2. And always thinking about an upgrade but i really dont know what i want in a bike, so this video really helps from someone with a normal perspective. And everyone saying get this or that.
Hey, glad you liked it! Yeah the best thing is to try as many bikes as you can. You may be surprised as to what you really like 👍🏍️🎉
@ Thank you for the great advice!!
this is what youtube should be, real people with real, honest advice and information, bigger channels just do marketing and ads with zero value for customers now... as a suggestion you should mention your height and dimensions in the clip, i found them in comments though so its all good.. great video, thank you!
Thank you for the kind words! 🙏😊👍 Yes, the height is very relevant to my findings. 💯 I should have mentioned it in the vid. 😌 (And yes, it bothers me too, when RUclipsrs become pure advertising outlets. I guess it pays the bills?)
I don't know if it's good or bad that I came across this video... I have a MT07 today and I'm going to get a new bike come spring. The MT07 is a bit too cramped for me. I'm 195cm. Before listening to you I was kinda set on testing a XSR900. But now you say the MT09 is cramped and you're a tall rider... Maybe I need to take a trip and test the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE, no dealers near by but I kind of fell in love with the looks of that bike. Or maybe play the safe card and get a Tenere 700... Oh the choices...
The best thing you can do is try as many of these bikes as you possibly can. I hadn't even considered the Tenere before that day. You might be surprised at what you end up liking 👍
Vstrom? Multistrada?
I'd love to try them out, if I get the chance! 👍

😁🙏🎉 I did make it
Love that Yamaha I bought mine in July. Norway looks beautiful. I would love to see it in person.
It really is a wonderful machine 👍🙏 Norway is lovely, esp May-August.
Great Country, Bike & Videos 👍😊
Thanks! 👍 Glad you liked it!
Greetings, As always another brilliant video production 🇺🇲🍾🎉🇺🇲 Thanks for sharing. Keep producing more videos with the T7.
Thank you for the kind words! 🙏😊👍 I have big dreams for next season, I love making these videos, more to come 👍
Is that the actual dash on your bike or your phone and an app.. ?
That's the dash 👍 very nice one on the newer models (although not much tech to display 😁)
Going through the same process now! :) Would you share how tall are you? I'm 200cm and most of bikes are too small :( considered xsr700, but my dealership sold them all ^^' mt-09 was fun, but not really my style. Tracer 7 boring, not that big. Triumph 1200XE was fun, but the most expensive and don't like the look. A bit lost here 😅 Would XSR700 work for 2 meters?
Step into my office, friend! 😁👍🏍️ I'm 186cm and a bit long in the legs. The xsr700 is too small for longer rides IMHO. The Tenere Extreme with a tall seat is your best bet, legroom, big pegs and a beefy suspension is worth the price difference 👍 Try one out, if you can!
Did you get snowed in yet? We just had our first frost here in the Ozarks last night. Time to get the winter gear out!
@@robbieandbeckie not yet, but it's getting cold ❄️🥶
Great video! I like your channel ... I want to ask you one question ... I am 6.5 (197cm) and I like xsr 700 so much, but I think its small for me and I like tenere also.;) I drove bikes (fazer, vtr, gsxr) 13 years ago ... before we have children and I want to ride again. Which one do you recommend ...xsr or tenere...?
Thank you! 🙏👍😊 For your height I would definitely go for the Tenere, especially if you plan on doing some longer trips. And if you can, try to compare the different versions of the Tenere. For me there is a big difference between how they feel. The Extreme was the clear winner, in my opinion. 👍 Good luck with your search!
hey man, I have a question. what is your height? I'm 193cm (6,3 ft) and i'm trying to find a good bike. I was looking at the XSR700/900 because I heard it's a decent choise for taller guys. Do you agree and why or why not? I believe you can also get a somewhat higher seat but it's less comfy.
Hello, I'm 186cm and out of shape (and old). I think the XSR plattform is uncomfortable in the knees. The distance between seat and foot peg is too small for me. I guess your tolerance for discomfort may be different based on your general fitness and health. But at 193cm? I say, get the Tenere Extreme and upgrade the seat 👍
@@TalkTheRide Thank you! I'm pretty fit, however I'd love to be unrestricted with the warmer weather and not feel my back after a few hours. I'll take your advice with me when making a final decision.
Good luck with your search! 🎉🏍️
Congrats for joining the tenere extreme club, you will enjoy it. 15 000 km on mine in 5 months ownership, i love it so much even if it is the less powerful bike i ever owned. The speedo staying at 0 is because these idiots puted the wheel in the wrong way (there is a side for the abs sensor). The cp2 engine can be used with very low rpm, i don’t know why you are always so high in rpm 😅 i understand you like to use the engine break but it’s a twin not a 4 cylinder, plus in the corners you will not turn smooth. I can definitely see a beginner rider, just practice it will come.
Thank you, I'm lovin' life on the Tenere 👍🙏😊🎉 I do like it higher up in the revs and I do sometimes get comments about it 😁🏍️♥️
Why are you staying in 5th gear at 130km/h on the highway ??? You can kick in the 6th even on 70km/h with the tenere
If I went 130 in 5th then that was a bit excessive, agreed 😁 Probably just too much going on at that moment
Nice Vid!! ♥
Thank you! 🙏👍😊🎉
I really enjoy your videos! Youre humble and just enjoying life on your motorcycle with a good portion of humor! Keep it up bro!
Glad you like them! More videos coming next year 👍🙏🎉
What a superbly constructed and informative video again Thomas.. brilliant and as always , your soothing voice presenting it with such command of English is inspiring. Every point you make is valid.. I'm 57 ridden for 40 years and had to change and adapt to my age, health and varying finances... Superb editing, filming and presenting.. much appreciation for your time and energy into producing it.
Thank you so much, Dave! 🙏👍😊 I love making these, big plans for next season🎉🏍️🏍️
well first you pick bike with your eyes... then want to accelerate fast but end with something comfy that don't wanna kill you or not provoking you. good choice, midweight 600-800cc ADV bikes very cool and can be used everywhere :) i think i will change to Triumph Tiger 800 (now on trident 660 :) .. ) ride and enjoy! definitely make longer trips!
💯 spot on! 😁 And I hear good things about the Tiger.
Lucky you have the choice of all the tenere models, in the usa we only get the basic model maybe one day yamaha will offer all models here.
Yes I've heard that. For some reason Yamaha is not going full force with the Tenere, in the USA. Maybe other regions too?
I’ll be the big 40 in November. I recently got back into riding last year and have a family now. My wife is amazing to give me the time to ride while she watches the kid. Planning a trip with some other riders soon to! Keep up the videos !
That's awesome 👍 it's a wonderful hobby! More videos next season, I have big plans!
For more leg room you could get a taller seat alongside some handlebar risers, and lowered footpegs. Would be a lot cheaper than a new bike!
That could help some, I agree. But I fear it wouldn't be enough, I went for maximum legroom and the Tenere Extreme 👍🏍️🎉
I like this channel, Norway looks beautiful with fantastic road, I to am not into specs so much although the are important but really the ride is what its all about. 👍
Thank you very much! Glad you like the videos 👍 I have big plans for next season 👍🙏🎉
I think a Honda NC700 might be a good first bike for many people. It sure is hard to find a good cheap helmet that fits, unless you gotta round head.
I haven't tried the Hondas yet, but I'm curious. They look so comfy! 😀👍
Started riding last year at 39 years old, got myself an NC700X and it’s an absolute joy and not intimidating for a beginner. Great for commuting as well. It won’t set anyone’s pants on fire but the confidence it gives you is fantastic and you can go pretty much anywhere (to the shops but also on a 1,000 mile tour).
great videos.
Glad you like them! 😀
You're awesome, I love this.
Thank you so much! 🙏👍😊 I love making these, big plans for next season 🏍️🎉
Thank you for sharing your journey. I imagine that you would just love the Great Lakes Region of Michigan. Lake Superior! I’ll keep watching!
Thank you, Joe! 🙏👍😊 Michigan would be awesome to see, America is def a dream destination.
is the gold wheels an option for this bike?
No, the wheels are standard. I don't think there are any kind of options actually. The whole bike is an "optioned out" version of the standard Tenere 👍
Oh Galore ! Haha , you said it 😊. Another good and honest video . Your ancestors did "reach out" to other Europeans 😅. The part of England where I was born used to be held by the Norsemen , there are many Viking placenames . And DNA ! Perhaps that's why I like riding in the wild and woolly north of Canada , which is very similar to Norway ( and lots of expat Norwegians live here too by the way ). You learn about motorcycle gear the hard way . But let me shorten the "learning curve " a little for you. Goretex - expensive but good . No need to pack and unpack rain gear . Ventilated is awesome . Electric heated jacket and gloves . Heated grips , Oxford are excellent . Waterproof boots , always . Comfort is everything and to be warm is to be safe ( quicker reflexes ). The coloured water is due to "glacial flour " , tiny rock particles suspended in the water which reflect light in various ways . As the water flow slows down , the particles sink and colour changes to a deeper green . It's very spectacular . Ride safe , ride far.
Thank you! That's a lot of good info 👍 Appreciate it! I hope to ride in Canada one day.
@@TalkTheRide. If you want to ride The Alaska Highway , I might be able to help .
" Every now and then I fall apart. Then I twist the throttle and I am whole again ." Very true . Good video .😊
Thank you, mate! 🙏😊👍
No need for a 700. Just went from a KTM 890 Duke R to a Triumph scrambler 400X. Lots of fun with the smaller bike, and more comfortable than the 890 for sure. I am 6.3"/190cm so a lot of bikes are way too small for me. Tried the new 990 Duke, it was terrible, felt smaller than the 890. Looks ok on the Motonomics simulator which I can recommend checking out before testriding a bunch of bikes that clearly wont fit 🤠
I like your style!
Thank you! Cheers!
Your right motorcycling doesn’t fix your life’s problems …just gives you a break from them…true insight. But also another thing it can also fixate you on the present moment , and the world you have constructed can disappear. That can be the most liberating benefit of motorcycling , if you lose that problematic life long enough , you find your true self in the present attached to nothing .
💯 well said! 👍🙏🏍️
Going to get my first bike for summer 2025 at age 57. It's time.
Go for it, Timo! 👍🎉🏍️🔥
Great video, Thomas. Many words of wisdom for new or potential riders. At 71 years old with 55 years of riding under my belt, I would add a couple of thoughts: 1. Get as much formal riding instruction as possible, not just when you're learning the basics, but throughout your riding years. Too many new riders feel that once they get the basics of shifting, turning and braking, they don't need additional training. However, there are always additional skill to learn. There are many riders who have logged lots of miles but have never practiced and mastered the skills to properly react to an emergency situation such as a car taking a left turn in front of you, avoiding target fixation, proper use of the front and rear brakes, etc. Take advanced riding courses and even trackdays to learn skills that will prepare you for an emergency. 2. If you start riding later in life, recognize that your balance, reactions, strength, vision, etc. are not what they were if you learned to ride at a much younger age. You are therefore at more risk than someone who learned as a kid. Staying away from heavily trafficked areas substantially reduces the risk of an accident. 3. Don't ride over your head to keep up with more experienced riders, or those who engage in risky riding. 4. Practice, practice, practice - Go to a parking lot to practice emergency braking, slow-speed skills, etc. Although I have many years of riding experience including dirt riding, sportbike riding, roadracing, and numerous trackdays, I still go to a nearby church parking lot to regularly practice these skills. Never stop learning!
Very wise words! I agree 💯, Mark 👍
Your style of videos is very refreshing and relates to us all, started my on-road riding early forties too 👍 xt660 then t7 for me too.
Glad you like the videos! I love making them 👍🎉
Ha ha ha. After 50 years without a bike I'm riding again at age 76.
That's amazing, David! What bike?
@@TalkTheRide Not so amazing. Perhaps stupid? I ride a 97 BMW 1100RT. It's great on the hwy, but I'm afraid to take it off road. I've clocked about 12,000 miles in the past year. I'm thinking about getting a Suzuki V Strom 650. There's too many forest service roads that I can't explorer on my Beemer. Cheers!!
Cool, lots of people mention the V Strom to me, I'm sure it's great (and not so heavy?).
@@TalkTheRide My RT weighs about 650 pounds wet. The V Strom 650 weighs about 450. Not sure if that's with a full tank.
Cool, I want to try a V Strom one day 👍
I'll be 46 in two months and have been riding Harley's half my life. But because of health issues with fibromyalgia i now ride a much smaller and lighter bike, a Honda CB500X 2022, and it felt like learning how to ride all over again. But i have to say it's so much fun! Thanks for another great video!
Thank you, Eva! Yeah from Harleys to a Honda CB500X is a transition, I bet. But I think it's a great bike! Good to hear you kept riding despite your health troubles 👍🏍️🎉🔥
