It's true that the Hyundai Sonata, particularly models with the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, has had some issues with engine reliability. Some owners have reported engine failure around the 100,000-mile mark. This is often linked to problems with the engine design and manufacturing, which can lead to excessive wear or even complete failure. Hyundai has acknowledged these issues in the past and has issued recalls and extended warranties to address them. However, it's always a good idea to have any used car thoroughly inspected by a mechanic before purchasing.

@@driveby_design A lot from transmission, cruise, air conditioner, gas gauge and much more. Normal according to Toyota when I brought up the lemon law. No one in the family wanted to drive it anymore after it slammed on the brakes on the highway for no reason. It almost got us rear ended a couple times.

@@OnlyMeee-ie3dw I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. It's important to feel safe and confident in your vehicle. Given your situation, it might be worth looking into a different manufacturer with a strong reputation for customer service and reliability. Before making your next purchase, consider checking reviews and speaking to other owners about their experiences. Additionally, always ensure you thoroughly test drive the vehicle under various conditions to catch any potential issues early. If you continue to face challenges, consulting with a consumer protection agency or legal expert about your rights under the lemon law might be beneficial.

@@driveby_design I replaced it with a 10 year old Ford. It hasn't given me one problem after three times the miles I put on the Toyota. Glad I didn't buy a Tacoma or Tundra! Never thought I'd like a Ford more than a Toyota. Of course, it's old and not a newer Ford.

I’m looking to purchase the XSE. The dependability has always been good, I like the design and the infotainment system is understandable. The downside is the head room in the back, especially if you’re tall at 6’. It handled like a sports car even though it puts out only 232 horsepower. However, the torque is great and it feels faster than the specs.

@@driveby_designyes! We went ahead and decided to purchase one. My wife wants this midnight blue color, which they did not have in stock, so the dealer is trying to get one from another location. One other aspect I thought was important with the XSE is AWD. We compared it to the Honda Accord and Mazda. Based on Toyota’s longevity in hybrid experience, we thought best to stick to Toyota. The price tag about floored us though. Expensive is understatement. If my daughter’s car hadn’t died, we wouldn’t have purchased a car period. However, one can save $5K per year in gas at or near 45mpg. What truly set it apart from the rest was its styling hand handling. You do feel the road, but I like that. My wife on the other hand prefers a smoother ride like her 2018 Avalon. Overall, I give Toyota credit for styling and dependability. The colors in the interior have a nice sporty design, but be prepared a whopping $45K for it after fees. Amazing that a 2.5 4cylinder hybrid could cost as much as some Cadillacs out there. Inflation for you

The styling and handling seem perfect for you, while your wife prefers the smoother ride of her Avalon. Hopefully, the dealer gets the exact model you want soon! Enjoy the new ride!

It sounds like you’ve done extensive research on this SUV, and it's great to hear that you’ve only come across one negative review since it hit the market. Regarding the interior color, it's true that some options might not be available in the US. It could be worth checking with the dealer for custom options or aftermarket solutions if you’re set on that specific color.

Auto manufactures couldn't be more out of touch with their customer. Imagine paying over 40k for a Turbo 4 cylinder. It just leaves a taste in your mouth that you can't get rid of. Did anybody ask for a smaller less reliable more expensive engine ? Just curious>?

    • @driveby_design

I understand your frustration. The shift towards smaller, turbocharged engines is often driven by manufacturers trying to meet fuel efficiency and emissions standards. However, this can sometimes feel out of step with consumer expectations, especially when reliability and cost are concerns. It's definitely a topic that sparks a lot of debate among car enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike. What kind of engine or features do you think auto manufacturers should focus on instead?
