Great video! It's sad that during recorder classes teachers don't listen to cds with beautiful recorder music with their students, it would help to improve the reputation of the recorder and could be an excellent moment during lessons to discover various style of musics.

Most instruments that require using your embouchure is a learned skill. As you play an instrument you become accustomed to listening and hearing but to determine if you are flat or sharp just takes practice . Today one can sit with a tuner to see and correct their pitch of the instrument . Training the ear is a delicate instrument itself .

I think what you said about intonation and tuning is very true. It is not just the pitch that can sound bad, but also the dynamics. I suspect that inexperienced players tend to blow harder for the high notes, which makes them not only sharp but also too loud and unbalanced? I play flute, rather than recorder, and although flute beginners can make the same mistake of blowing hard and sharp for high notes, it is easier to fix on the flute. That makes me wonder... How does a pro recorder player maintain pitch while playing at different dynamics? i.e. how to you play loud and soft at the same pitch? On the flute it can be achieved in two primary ways: 1) rolling out or in to alter tuning, 2) widening or narrowing the lips to change the amount of air without blowing "harder" or changing the speed of the air. But on a recorder you have a fixed mouthpiece, so that both the cross sectional area and the direction of the air hitting the fipple are pretty much fixed, yes? So how do you control the sound?
