Making the soft-to-the-touch Finnish birch bark handle knife - puukko
From the harvesting of bark to the oil finish, it was a pleasure to craft this puukko.
all of the bark was from fallen trees. It was difficult to harvest bark from living trees during winter.
I went with a handle that is thicker than the traditional style.

Step stool - all wood joinery - fixing warped boards with dovetails
Просмотров 1826 месяцев назад
I made a step stool some years ago. But the dovetails weren't well connected. SO I made this updated version. I fixed the warping of the two sideboards by changing the type of dovetail on the front side of the boards. Tail to pin. no nails used. Some glue is used in the leg that I fixed. wedged half dovetail joint used in the lower crossbar. Chapters: 0:00 - intro 0:33 - marking and cutting dov...
Working with birch bark - axe sheaths

I've recently started working with birch bark and I can see its potential for crafting. I've made a simple sheath inspired from the design of the youtube channel Skäri - Living Heritage. Great channel with loads of historical information. I've added an additional feature to further help keep the sheath on the the axe. 1$ card scraper and burnisher - easy sharpening method
Просмотров 687 месяцев назад
Here is a simple card scraper from an old japanese saw blade. This method is not for very high quality scraping performance. It's a method to achieve adequate scraping easily and quickly. And it's inexpensive, if you have the opportunity to get a used nail punch and if you have a broken japanese saw blade laying around. The success comes in the hard material of the japanese saw. Most japanese s...
Broad axe straight handle - and scraping wood with glass!
Просмотров 5567 месяцев назад
My first axe handle shaping. What a pleasure it was. Shaping was done with hand tools. I found some dining table legs made of hard wood (someone suggested it's teak) I fit a small single beveled broad axe head to the straight handle. Since I am unsure of the wood's species I won't be doing too hard work with the axe. However, I do want to test its limits. I'll try some hewing with it. The strai...

Is this a Finnish traditional method?

historically, crafting with birch bark was common. It is known as the plastic of the past. People used it as a roofing material, baskets, backpacks, shoes, knife sheaths and more. I haven't found a historic example of a birch bark axe sheath, but one can probably assume it they were made.

I saw the title and I went "stanley 78? that sound like a weird name for a revolver", I was really confused when I saw the revolver and how weird it looked like, it was just after I read the name of the youtube channel I realized that it was not a revolver at all, side note stanley 78 really do sound like a name for a revolver

Ha! good to know. Almost all metal bodied handplanes have a number associated to them according to their design. For example, a common Stanley plane is the No. 5 Stanley plane
