I had to do this yesterday on my 78 Regal. I kept getting lifter taps on Cylinder 3 and couldn't quiet it when I tightened the nut. Then I noticed that the pressed in rocker arm stud became taller than the rest because it had pulled up as I tried to tighten the nut to stop the ticking. I tapped the hole and screwed in the threaded stud with red loctite. All is well now.
I also had to get longer push rods stock ones were to short
@@adifferentwaytodoit You tapped yours for threads or went back with the press in type studs like gm factory used? I got lucky then, my original push rod worked.

IDK what the diff is besides using heat or not. I did both. I mean even on a heat cycle that pin is gonna expand just like the rod. So if the rods cold and the pin is cold its the same. If the rod is hot and the pin is cold it gives a you a bit more clearance to make it easier but at the end of the day the pin is sized a bit smaller so it will go into the rod...I like these vids that never show up on the YT algy simply cause they are the truest sh%t.
Why?
Mostly for durability, a little for power. When paired with shot-peening it removes potential stress risers which is where the rod is most likely to fail. It also reduces both the physical weight and reciprocating weight(by allowing the rods to sling off excess oil) freeing up a bit of power at high RPM. We did it all the time to stock SBC rods before getting them resized and shot-peened back when we couldn't afford aftermarket pieces. Done right with upgraded rod bolts they end up significantly stronger than the legendary "pink" rods Chevy used in high performance engines from the muscle car era such as the DZ302 or LT1.

The big thing is to either get or make a support for the piston so it doesn’t pinch the wrist pin galley in the piston. GM supplied one, but not rocket science to make one.

That wrist pin is now too tight in the piston. Far too tight! You're going to have horrible piston slap at the very least, and increased piston skirt and cylinder wall wear! I personally don't use a torch, I use an old pizza oven with the rod cap and bolts removed. I mark everything first so there are no oopsies!

it's to tight because you crushed the piston with the press you can not press on the piston there is a tool that connects to the rod head and lets the piston dangle then you can use a press or heat on the rod head. I agree with you RUINED that one been doing this for 45 years my friend

I"m with you the machine shop presses the old ones off but doesn't press them on , to each their own I think it's just a little psychology going on to get your money just my 2 cents. Going to be putting one together soon and that's what I'll be doing.
