    My theory backed up by some science is the more diverse nutrients the animals consume, the more nutrient rich meat they produce. always great information and with the data to back it up, thank you for all of your knowledge you’re sharing with us! For the haylage, how long is that able to be stored in those blue barrels? I thought it needed to be wrapped in plastic but that’s an awesome idea, I want to try this

      @@mark3r442 Shelf life of at least a year if you can keep it airtight. Let it sit for at least 30 days to ferment before feeding though. @ thank you! the person I was buying the sheep from told me to be careful with fermented foods, is that actually a problem, or are you just doing this for the cows? Also, I was completely off on the lambing timing haha, expecting lambs to start at the end of this month already 😬 still super nervous but thank you for your encouragement and praying everything goes smoothly!

    • @birchfieldfarming
      @birchfieldfarming 3 дня назад

      @ Listeriosis is a bacterial infection that can affect sheep. There is a risk if feed is contaminated - meaning sucking up dust/dirt/soil with the grass, not packing tight enough, spoilage, etc. I’ve never had a problem here feeding our haylage to both sheep and cattle, but we practice common sense - if it doesn’t look or smell good, then toss it to compost instead of feeding. Most of the time, animals will avoid it anyway. If you can weigh your sample after packing, you should have at least 12 lbs of dry matter per cubic foot of material. I’m merely standing on and stomping down material as we pack, and this seems to be a tight enough pack to give us a good ferment without any additives. If it’s a concern beyond that, make it up and send in a few samples the first year to get a good feel. As always, there are risks to everything. Best wishes with lambing and reach out if I can help.

    Good info Jason. My worries about the St Croix is that the carcass is so thin that butchering them myself they may not be worth the extra work. I raise meat chickens but when putting my layers in the freezer they're so bony it's hardly worth the trouble of cleaning them. So, St Croix allows more per acre but for butchering and the size of the cuts how much extra work do you have to do to put the same amount as a Dorper into the freezer? In the end the carcass has to be usable. I know there are no free rides. God bless.

    Domesticated ruminant livestock animal input requirements that range from virtually none at all to extremely low seems to this old fart non-farmer to be what should be the primary overriding goal for every single regenerative agriculture practioner to be focused upon. Especially as far as meat hair sheep are concerned. The ongoing heated argument regarding the live weight at the time of sale and the slaughtered carcass weights of usable culinary grade meat as far as the Dorper breed of hair sheep versus all other breeds of meat/hair sheep; seems to overshadow whether farmers/ranchers raising Dorpers in environments that *ARE NOT* suited to this dry land/desert breed can continue to afford the extremely high input costs in time, labor, medications, hormones, supplements, feed stocks, hoof trimming, tail docking, the regular loss of baby lambs because of difficulties in birthing, and the regular loss of juvenile and adult sheep as a result of parisitic infections.

    Jason I really appreciate how you share God on your videos! My wife and I are starting a ranch/farm called Good Works Ranch. Proverbs says to seek wisdom from many, so that’s what I’m doing. We want to use sectional grazing and know little about it. I would like to share our plans with you and get some advise if your willing. I could email our plans to you. We are doing the ranch to provide food for the hungry. Mathew 25:42 is the heart behind what we are doing.

      It’s changed over the years. Started with moving every 3 days several years ago and now move daily within 5 acres. 13 paddocks at 1/4 acre but we have several other areas we move them thru within the 5 acres.

      Red Devon USA website is all I can recommend to start. Mine are more cold hardy than heat tolerant, so you may be better off with South Poll down that far south. Find a breeder relatively close and pick their brain. If anybody’s reading this in Florida with Devons, help us out!🤠

    It has been said that graziers spend 80% of their costs on winter feed for ruminants. I share these thoughts. Food is composted of proteins, carbs, and fats. Food is energy. Energy is the bottom line. Energy is life. With that in mind Energy [E] is measured in heat units called calories. Carbs and proteins contain about 3-4 kcals per gram. Fats contain 3 times the E at 9 kcals/gram. So, if you add a 3% source of fat to your feed, you can increase your E by a 9% vs 3% with a protein or carb equivalent. Most of the fats in grasses are contained within the seeds. That is how the plant stores the E for the next generation. What about trying an experiment: Grow some oil sunflowers along the sides of buildings, edges wherever you have full sun. Try several different types that people and birds can also eat. Think of it as a multi-species cover crop/ potential income diversification. If you add about 2% fat to your ration, you would be adding about 6-8% to the total E of your ration. Growing sunflowers could be used in several ways. If it does not work for the ruminants, you could hang the heads to dry[ inside a paper bag ] then put them in the chicken tractors as winter treats for the chickens or make your own sunflower seed snacks or make homemade seed oil for personal consumption. Voila’ PS: Over the last two summers, black soldier flies have started to lay eggs in the poop trays I built below my roosts in my chicken tractor. The black soldier fly larvae recycled the chicken poop and my birds ate the larvae and dined like queens. 8-) This year I hope to make a BSL bin that will self harvest the grubs so I can save them for this time of year when the birds need that extra E and protein.

      @@SkippingCalvesFarms-je2cb Appreciate this info! The best approach in our small farm context is going to be stockpiled grazing. I grew sunflowers specifically for this purpose after hearing one of the “gurus” talk about them in a stockpile mix. Big disappointment, as there’s just nothing left of them but a dead stalk when it comes time to winter graze. Harvesting by hand is not a feasible option for 12K lbs of live weight animal. Honestly, I just keep coming back to fescue - I just can’t find anything better from a practical standpoint.

    Have you ever heard of EM1 solution? You can make it from easily acquired (and inexpensive) materials and it's all natural. If you spray that solution on manure area (even chicken coops) it will get rid of the flies and the smell that attracts them. EM stands for Effective Microorganisms and the process to make it was invented by Dr. Yongghi Cho (a Korean) which he details in his book "Korean Natural Farming". Dr. Cho's book methods came to the attention of the Chinese military. At the time, the Chinese military took their pigs (they raised for food) with them where ever they went which caused problems with the locals because of the smell and flies. Long story short, Dr. Cho was hired to help them and all the flies and smell went away. That's the incident that made Dr. Cho famous. Before that, hardly anyone would listen or pay attention even in Korea though he had a PhD. (People don't like change.) After the success with the Chinese military, everyone wanted to hear about his methods. His book details how to make the solution. It's called "Korean Natural Farming". His son (who also has a PhD) has updated his father's methods to be less expensive yet. But I think his father's EM1 solution is miraculous. You should try it for your flies.
