Buying a LEGO haul in China - WHAT to expect
Great job!
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback 🙏
What are the pots called that you use to sort?
No specific name sorry - these were donated by a friend. I have tried to find similar and the best is just food containers from bulk stores or the smaller plastic ones from IKEA
Print quality on the tees looks great - where did you get them done? Looking to get some new one for Bricktober!
Just through Vistaprint. I used a high quality Canva file that had lots of pixels and it came out very well!
The more you let people's online an in the Lego community. Know you saling Lego parts. Carnt go Rong. 😊
True that!
I will say, the drawrs you have are not making the most of the space you have, I use some craftsman drawers from amazon and they work fantastic because they lock into themselves and have very little wasted space. Also, when you get reject minifigure torsos, you should be pulling any good condition hands or arms, they sell for a decent ammount. They can take a while to sell, but it's worth it when they do! Another thing to thin about is that you don't need stuff to sell right away, It's good to have a large catalog of thing for buyers because then you will show up on their wanted lists.
Yes this is a very temporary measure - another job on the to do list! Do you have a link to the craftsman drawers?
Closed my store for a month to catch up on my backlog we have already have 300000 ready to upload in our files
Yes definitely one option - I prefer to always be open for customers as you never know who is looking :D
@@kiwibrickexchangeI agree but the backlog has overflowed the store space after I bought a store that was closing and the integration is a bit difficult with the current systems we have in place
That would be an easier way if you are trying to integrate a second store. Exciting stuff!
Great video - have subscribed and look forward to seeing you progress!
Thanks! Much appreciated
I forgot to send my question.... we need to build a full community from NZ!
🙌🏽🙌🏽
Will you be at Wellington Brick Show?
We will be attending but not selling/showcasing this year, might be something for next year
@kiwibrickexchange I'm exhibiting - and might need a last minute order to complete some things. Always great to have local sellers!
Let me know what your display is and we will come and say hi! Happy to help out with parts if they are in stock or in our bulk.
@@kiwibrickexchange I'm calling it "The Village of Evergreen Falls." ☺️
Will come and say hi 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Purchased from you before and going to return. In fact I'm going to check your store now after finishing watching this video.
Thanks for all your orders 🙌🏽🙌🏽 much appreciated
Integrating social media and your store was a stroke of genius. First question whenever you buy something online is "can I trust this company not to rip me off?", so sticking your face on the internet and being totally transparent as you are makes the question a hell of a lot easier to answer. I haven't had a need to buy from Bricklink myself yet, but yours will be the first store I check out when I do.
Thanks! Much appreciated. As I said - we are providing a service and hopefully it works for people :) the vlogs show the hard work that goes into it as well
You always say we or us but we never see anyone else do you do this with your wife or partner or something?
My daughter :) she is a bit too young to jump on the camera and videos to talk about processes but you will see clips from time to time :)
I think the small population of Australia and Aotearoa/NZ is better, in a way. It's almost a captive audience, in that we prefer to source locally rather than deal with shipping from Europe or America, so please provide as many local sources for specialised items as you can! There is an ideal equilibrium, though, so a good ratio needs to be maintained between buyers and sellers.
This is true! Very good thoughts thanks
Never underestimate the amount of AFOLs in NZ 😎💥 Great Q&A mate!
100%
Keep up the great work! 🙌
Thanks 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Awesome video! Interesting questions and great answers! Keep up the content.
Thanks for the feedback!
Great video! Enjoyed that.
Glad you enjoyed it
Kudos and best wishes on your Lego journey!
Thanks you 🙏🙏
Question. I have a new BL store but I haven’t seen very many orders. I don’t want to give up but I’m struggling with getting parts in. I have 28000 parts with how saturated the US LEGO market is it worth even trying to continue?
Happy to answer that in the Q & A video too
I purchased 2 imperial stormtroopers last week, I love imperial stormtroopers. Very happy, great communication, quick service. 😀
Thanks for your order 🙌🏽🙌🏽 glad we could help
no offense at all, but is having a BL store in New Zealand a really smart idea? isnt there a lot of shipping cost being on the end of the earth? also i cant imagine their being a lot of AFOLs in NZ/AUS
Funnily enough we have an extremely active AFOL community and many stores - but we have only opened shipping to Australia and New Zealand as shipping costs are high - so that can affect orders. However we are averaging 80 orders a month so definitely a strange week
I try to store my minifigs with the legs off the torsos. I've had buyers complain about cracked torso... so I don't take chances anymore and store them in parts.
I haven’t had any issues with that and I always check the torso of a fig when picking so hopefully that takes care of it. All our new figs are split into parts though
@@kiwibrickexchange it "seems" to happen in shipping!?!? Sales are slooooow here also.
Yeah I don’t see how that can happen unless US post is as bad as the horror stories. I have had no complaints in over 350 orders for broken parts and we just use a bubble mailer for most 🤷🏻♂️ I’d check and photograph before sending if you are worried too, or on anything that is higher value
@@kiwibrickexchange I triple check on figs over 10$... but I suspect buyers check if they are cracked by twisting them.... :-/
@@bwetdude Yeah that must be frustrating. How often is it happening?
problem is how many other stores are parting out the same set everytime, im astonished for someone as big as Ralph's bricks to not pull an order in 3 days... but then again not too surprised. I think stores need to dip into used alot more, spend a lot less and get more in return. Just my opinion
The time taken to sort used can be a long haul…it just seems to be the nature of Bricklink!
Rare/New colours or moulds start off expensive and then drop over time as supply expands. If you look at the Used sales the recent ones will also be lower than the average. The average takes time to update to the latest price.
Yes it was more the fact that the Used average was higher than the new average - which you would expect to also decrease in price at the same time. Not always the case though
What is your least favourite colour to part out. I always find I leave the Black, Grey's and White till last, Kind of avoid them till the end :P
Thanks for the question 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Add your questions to this comment! They will be answered in next week's VLOG.
I've just recently come across your channel and find it fascinating seeing the ins and outs of running a Bricklink store. My question is: how many hours on average do you spend running your store each week, and if you were to calculate an effectively hourly wage, is it reasonable considering the time spent tracking down deals on used parts, parting out etc? I always wonder if small owner-operated stores like these are able to provide a liveable income, especially considering the generally high supply costs in NZ.
@@traceysnaps Great questions thanks! Will add this to the list :D I definitely have a strong opinion on this
Kia ora, I came across your vlog while searching for Lego storage ideas to house my kids growing collection. It’s great to get some NZ content featuring products and shops that I can actually buy from. The Spotlight craft storage looks excellent. Bricklink seems like a great way to replace broken and missing pieces for our sets. My question is…Do you remove the stickers from used lego or leave them on?
@@CrafterNZ78 I'm glad that it helps! I'll add this on to the list for next week
List your instructions They are extra lots People have them on their wanted lists - they bring customers to the store Collectors wants instructions Bulk lot restorers who sell sets on eBay want instructions I’ve sold 220 so far this year
Yeah I think I just needed to hear this a few more times :) another weekend job it is! Any rule of thumb? Do you list small sets too?
@@kiwibrickexchange I list everything but if space is a concern, I'd start with any licensed instructions or vintage ones. Also don't rely on brickstore sales averages, put in the effort and research what an item can actually sell for in your region by grouping by currency and going off the highest sales data versus trying to be the cheapest. This goes for everything - not just instructions. Store by theme in numbered order to make picking more efficient. For City or Creator manuals maybe just set a minimum price like $0.50 for the smaller sets. Take a look at my store and pull up the Instructions category to see how I do it if you like.
Nice, thanks for the tips
This will help me a lot 😊
Thanks for the feedback
I run a store in Aus and I used to keep all the instructions but switched to only keeping them from expensive set. Because there's no easy way (as far as I know) to store them and find the particular one someone buys. It takes me way too much time to pick an instructions for how low they sell for.
What’s your rule of thumb for “expensive”?
@@kiwibrickexchange ..Oh, about $250aud and up ㄟ( ▔, ▔ )ㄏ..I've parted out over 1000 sets in two years and sold maybe 20 instructions. So it would be worth it if they get you more sales of other parts but in reality they take up (in my case about 3m x 1m of room) plus are difficult to pick. Maybe they would be worth something in 10 years but I doubt it since there might be VR instructions by then:)
That sounds more reasonable. I think that’s my thinking behind not keeping them too haha. Maybe some older ones but the rest just take up space and take a while to sell. That’s one thing that is very limiting for us - space!
Thank you for the insight! It's great to know what to look for but the how is always a hard question to answer for us beginners. Great video!
Thanks mate. Marketplace + Yard Sales - best place for beginners. Best tip as well was to know that you are going to make mistakes with it. I had a shocking buy of some discoloured Lego that I knew was discoloured and had to discard most of it - that helped me be more careful with condition. Good luck with the hunt 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Brickstore NZ is pretty good.
Yeah always shipped quickly and competitive prices. Decent packaging too
1: How accurate is your brick freedom data? it says I have 2 more orders this month than I do... 2: I would not put away the instructions, I would list them, and they may not sell will when you would list them if you put them in the rainy day box! I do list instructions in my bricklink store, and I've sold a couple! Specificly Dimensions charactor packs for some reason. 3: I don't really agree that it's worth your time to upload bulk. Personally I go through bulk and pull out any parts worth like $0.20 USD or more, or uneique pars or minifigure accesories. Then I sell the rest as bulk for about as much as I paid for it per pound. 4: When I buy used lots I actually look for stuff from non collectors, because they usually they don't really know what they have.
Some good thoughts here and thanks for the comment. 1) Accurate as long as I’ve picked through there, I do get extras saying I need to post but I ignore that line. That can be a bit messy I guess. I find it easier than keeping track of it through Bricklink. 2) Fair points 3) I hear you on that but as I’ve previously said in vlogs - some pieces are worth more than you think. 3 red plates that only appeared in one set were $20 of upload value. Definitely not my priority in terms of time and you could just sell the bulk off again after listing figures. I have thought about doing that for one of the tubs. 4) That’s been hit and miss for me. My best haul was actually from someone who was a collector, but clearing bulk.
Time to secure those drawers for those shakes!!!! I certainly don't miss them.
Barely moved at all and to be fair they are actually under the lip of the shelves so shouldn’t fall out 😂
Great vlog mate!! Despite the shoplifting issues. 😅
It’s the price we have to pay 😂😂
Great video.
Thanks for the feedback 🙌🏽🙌🏽
The What The Fig site is really cool and useful! Thanks for sharing! 🙌🏼
Yes it is! I’m hoping for a few improvements as well but definitely great for building collections too
Great video! You touched on it in this video but I would like to know what you look for in LEGO sets to add to your store. There are only so many new pieces released each year, so what else weighs up your decisions?
Sounds like a good topic! Will add in some thoughts through the week - I’ll cover it in depth in our buying guide video but it is going to be a month or two before I have the time to really do it justice
@@kiwibrickexchange That's great thanks, I'll be sure to stick around for sure!
Great content. Keep it up!
Hey! Super inspired by you and others in the community to start a bricklink store and currently in the process of sorting Lego into inventory, and was wondering if I should scrub the stickers off of pieces or not? I think removing them seems to be the better option as the pieces themselves are likely more in demand than with the specific sticker.
Thanks for the awesome feedback. Pieces are more likely to sell without a sticker and any stickered pieces I add to the store need to be nicely centred (that’s just my standard though haha). Some stickered pieces like Star Wars may be worth putting in, but scrubbing off stickers I don’t think is worth the effort. If it doesn’t come off with a quick peek then it goes in my discard pile.
@@kiwibrickexchange Ah, ok! That makes sense. I’d figured that be the answer.
But if you have the patience, some stickered parts can be worth more 👍🏼👍🏼
QR code no longer work
Yeah I’m getting a permanent one soon instead :) was just a free trial but definitely worked
Gotta get the Gollum live from Wellywood!!!

Congratulations 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Great update. Vanish bath for the horse and whites will be the ticket!!
I ended up putting them in a bulk lot on TradeMe. Worked a treat :)
This is probably the best and most helpful video i've seen. Thanks man.
Thanks for the feedback! Glad it is helpful for you :)
Thanks for the content! One question I do have. If I hae the same item, lets take 3001 in blue in two different conditions, used but "like new" and used but "heavy playware". So I put the two conditions in remarks. Now, if I add more parts, etc and at some point want to consolidate items, those two are always thrown together, even though they differ in remarks and condition. How can I avoid that, so they remain as two seperate items?
It’s a great question and one that can be tricky with Brickstore when combining lots. My recommendation would be having two separate lots and not consolidating as the lots are in such different condition. As I mention in most of my videos I don’t list heavy playwear unless it’s a more expensive or rare part. It would also be an issue where you copy remarks when adding and hence why I would not add the heavy playwear. Also make sure if you do add any information it’s in the “comment” line. The remarks line is where you add your store code/location. Let me know if you have any questions or if you want to have a longer discussion there is a link in the description.
Thanks for the reply. „Heavy used“ was just an example, more likely it’s going to be rare parts where to put comments. So no way this can be done? Because when consolidating, you also can’t like skip the particular part. Quite annoying that this is not working…
If you are wanting it then I would copy that line to a separate Brickstore file and do a separate upload. There is no individual option per line on Brickstore that I have seen to consolidate or not - it generally is the box you tick on Bricklink
Great video thank you . really helpful & useful information
Thanks for the feedback, glad it helped!
I also like to pack my orders like lego does. Why do it better then the master himself? Your doing a great job!
Thanks for the feedback. I don’t see how I could find time to individually pack bags! 😅
@@kiwibrickexchange me neither, why should we waste more plastic then needed?
That’s my plan, but I still want to find a good balance between protecting an order and waste. I do like that my postage bags are recyclable
Thank you for another great video! Brick Freedom seems really useful showing how many pieces should remain. For sorting my brother got me one of those wooden sifters and that really helps break bulk into different sizes quickly, then I have a similar technique to your cups before filling my drawers.
Thanks for the feedback again. Yes, use whatever categories work for you - I just find breaking it into those help to get it easier to part out into actual lots. The serving trays I bought this week should help as well, I’ve also seen some cool wooden tables but that will be when I have a bit more space
