Thank you, this is a good video for people coming to the UK. I was an immigrant in another country. I learned their language, I went to their events, I learned their culture and I hung out with their people. I work with a lot of Africans in a major uk city. The African staff refuse to speak to the British staff. When they do speak to us, it is to make a snidey comment or say something aggressively at us. The African staff don’t do anything on shift. They just stand there. And so the African staff are told to patrol the outside of the building in the rain and snow whereas the British staff and any African staff who have made the effort to learn English get to work inside the building out of the snow and rain. The African and Asian staff make no effort at all to learn our culture and learn about the work we are doing. And so they cannot join in with the British staff nor any of the events nor relate to customers in any way. Recently, we hosted a famous musical. All the British staff were laughing, dancing and singing the songs from the musical around the corridors, dancing with each other, and it was a lot of fun. The African staff just stood there. None asked what the musical was or what it was about. I worked at our Bonfire celebrations last year and this year. Again, none of the Asian or African staff had researched Bonfire Night, so when I asked them if they knew what the event was all about, they said no. Not one Asian or African member of staff had researched our cultural event of Bonfire Night. And we see this. We see the lack of effort to learn English, the lack of effort to be nice to us, the lack of effort to involve themselves in our culture and our way of life. And the fact that African staff just stand there and we are working our butts off to make up for the staff who do no work is building resentment among the British staff. We also find African people rude. You say we are sarcastic and rough. We find African staff rude, snidey and aggressive. Our ways of joking are actually fun. If you understand them. They often are a way of saying we admire and like each other and we care for each other but without sounding over emotional and soppy. So we will say, by eck, you’re an ugly bastard. We mean the opposite. We mean wow, you are so good looking. When you understand this, you will understand the jokes. They are not offensive, they are comments of admiration for each other. We smile when we don’t mean it because we are being polite and we don’t want to upset the other person. All the under handed ways you read into us are actually us caring for the other person, being polite, being kind. Reading negativity into our well meaning actions is just going to make us dislike you. Whereas African staff snap at us, they physically push us out of the way so they can walk past us, they demand we give them our things so that they can do tasks because they have forgotten to bring their equipment into work so demand we give them ours. African staff using chairs in the break room as tables or places to put their bags when elderly British staff are standing including British staff who are disabled. African staff keep using chairs as tables until an older British woman tells them to share the chairs and she points to the elderly staff and disabled staff who are having to stand. This behaviour fosters a lot of resentment among British staff. We would be happy if African staff said hi to us. That would be a start. And then if African staff showed an interest in the work we do and learn English and communicate with workers and customers. If African staff do some work while they are on shift. And if African staff show an interest in our country and culture. Ask questions. We will answer them. We will jump to help any African who behaves well towards us because we don’t want to be racist. We want to get on well with people from other countries. We want African staff to change and include themselves. Ask questions. We want to help.
