Recorded 7/16/1993 169st & Hillside Ave Queens, NY A big DSNY Crane Carrier Integrated Rear Loader parked on lunch break in Queens. 6v71 Detroit Diesel pancake engine, it laid on its side under the middle part of the truck and was mounted on the left side frame rails. The engine was basically suspended above the ground.

NYC Sanitation doing a demo of a prototype Heil Split Tailgate Rear Load Collection Truck (Crane Carrier chassis). This was the start of the famous DSNY split body recycle trucks. In the video they take the truck on standard garbage collection, it was realized that the split body was not suited for regular trash collection but much more suited for dual stream recycling.

It’s faster and more efficient to use manual labor. Containers are good for keeping the garbage contained, but what happens when the container is blocked by snow, a vehicle, debris etc. and what happens when the manual loader breaks on the truck? now you have to resort to manual labor anyway and by the time one container is dumped into a truck the other truck with 3 guys on it is already halfway down the block.
The job is going to change immensely within three years because of containerization. Do you work for the department or are just a fan?
I’m just a fan but i have friends and family that work/worked for DSNY.

@NycHeavyIron I've seen some, you hit the nail.on the head there, their new design is hideous, I'm sorry to say.
@@medusafanatic if you check out my instagram (same as my youtube) i post pictures of the new trucks. They have a unicorn truck on staten island, its a CCC truck with a leach rear loader. It’s an impressive truck, it did its first collection on my street, still had the tags on it from the dealership.

I really miss the ccc trucks with the steps, I remember as a kid in the late 90's early 2000's how I use watch them pass by my house especially when I was on vacation from school. I can even remember asking one of the sanitation workers if I can come inside he shook his head no lol then I asked my dad why he wouldn't let me he said that's dangerous God forbid you got hurt, then we can legally sue sanitation, damn good ol days.
A much simpler time! Snow days were awesome, getting woken up to the sound of tire chains and plows scraping the street.
