    I live in Massachusetts zone: 6a and today I want to try for the first time this method (since I only started gardening in 2022 and I totally fell in love with it) but after spending hundreds of $ in nurseries 😁 (obviously, worth every penny 😁) I ordered native seeds and I have already in November, sowed some on the ground. I had no idea about winter sowing like that! Thanks to yt for suggesting videos so I found out! Can I use compost that I have here (bumper crop) is the brand instead of going and buying potting mix? Please help🙏🏽 Thanks for this video.

    • @Joyfulfarmer
      @Joyfulfarmer 8 часов назад

      @@K414nn4love that you have fallen in love with gardening - it is truly the best! I have never used straight compost, but have used it to “stretch” potting mix before when I was running low. I might try mixing it with coco coir or perlite to make sure it is light enough for the seedlings to get air to their roots and grow. Also, here is an answer I found from Trudi on using compost in general…hope it helps! 💚🌱 “I am leaning on towards it might be too rich, not for germination, but may foster faster growth that weather would normally control and that weak growth could die off. However, I think mixing it with ground in a draining bucket, dowsing it with a kettle boiling water to kill seeds and bacteria or virus; then you can use it. Compost is a great additive to soils, you can also put it down now and dig in to the beds you plan for your WS seedlings. You can use it mixed in with some soil but otherwise it's great for the ground where you will put your transplants.”

    I‘m wondering if this also works in Germany with our sometimes harder frosty winters without freezing to death after sprouting 🤔

    • @Joyfulfarmer
      @Joyfulfarmer День назад

      @@DaraRich great question! True winter sowing is done in winter in vented containers and seeds will not sprout until conditions are right for them outside. You would sow at the same time we do, but your seeds will hold off sprouting until it warms up in the spring, a little later than ours here in the southern US. In areas with shorter growing seasons (last frost date in spring to first frost date in the fall) seed selection is going to be key in being successful with winter sowing. It works especially well for seeds native to your area and plants that are perennial to your climate, but any temperate seeds can be sown that are not tropical. How long is your growing season?

    • @DaraRich
      @DaraRich День назад

      @ Our growing season is pretty long (5b), but as you say in the video there‘s issues in the spring with changing temperature patterns. My challenge differs from freezing to burning of the plants in containers. The same in our little unheated greenhouse. But I guess winter sowing could help me cope with limited space for indoor propagation for my large outdoor field. Every year there’s a little struggle with planting out in April and babying the cold sensitive seedlings at the same time. I know what procrastination and dying of baby plants is like🫣😉 Maybe a try in temperate varietys like lavender, parsley, kohlrabi, lettuce(…) would work here. Thank you for the video and also for taking time for your nice answer☺️. I appreciate it

    • @Joyfulfarmer
      @Joyfulfarmer День назад

      @@DaraRich sounds like you have some of the same issues with fluctuating temperatures that I do. We have the occasional polar air that reaches us here in 8a and it can reach the negative teens Celsius. I don’t like losing plants…I do cheat and modify this method for certain plants by bringing some inside or giving them extra cover, and I talk about that in Part 2 which should post this weekend. This will be the first year I experiment with putting some of my winter sowing containers in our tunnel to see how that goes. I hope the experimenting will work out for you and wish you the best growing season in 2025! Thank you for watching!💚🌱

    It’s amusing how these gardening content creators videos never mention what zones in the country / overseas that these techniques is successful in! That’s very important! What about zone areas like Canada, New York, Chicago, Colorado ect in the winter months?!! Better yet demonstrate in real-time how this so called “winter sowing” is successfully achieved in colder zones! Stop advertising false information that doesn’t work for every state / country! Most of these gardening content creators live in the South, Southwest or California! 🤦🏽‍♀️

    • @Joyfulfarmer
      @Joyfulfarmer День назад

      @@vetgirl71 that may be the one piece on information I didn’t emphasize well in the video. Classic winter sowing works for any zone and any location because it works with the climate and natural rhythms of your area. It is especially useful for native plants and plants that are perennial to your zone, but can be used for all but tropical plants. The only exception is when you are growing annual veggies you may have to choose shorter days to maturity varieties if your growing season (last frost date to first frost date) is on the short side. Trudi created the method in the 70s and it is well proven to work in any zone. Hope that helps! Happy growing. 💚🌱

    Very good tutorial, thank you for sharing it. Question: After the seeds are planted in a container, is it necessary to keep that container outdoors or can the container be stored inside an unheated garage or barn for the winter? My thought is that until the seeds germinate and need sunlight there's really no need for them to be outdoors. As long as the soil stays damp and cold then the stratification requirements should be met. Once the seeds begin to germinate they can then be moved outdoors to get sunlight and moisture. Does this sound correct? Thank you.

    • @Joyfulfarmer
      @Joyfulfarmer 2 дня назад

      Sure! That should work out just fine. I would just check the moisture levels now and then. And depending on your last frost date, I’d make sure they are outside as it gets closer and as the days get longer right before spring. Happy growing and thanks for watching! 💚🌱

      You show many containers to use but from my experience and observation of others they may not be the best for every area. I’m Z5a and our last 2 winters were extremely warm. What happens is the seeds germinate too soon and freeze and with all the rain some rotted. This year I set them on the east side of house and they did well. Some used large tubs with individual small pots with little success. The trick is to have a good balance of soil to air so they have enough moisture and remain frozen until it’s time. Many dried out. The weather changes are making garden tricky. I wonder if just using an old fashioned cold frame would be the same, but would need to monitor lid on hot days.

    I just love the name of your channel & that you keep your videos as succinct as possible but informative and positive. We are a couple hours north of you near OKC, and I am so excited to have found your channel for tips and tricks!!! I have found that Baker Creek has the most chance of having something other than the variety I want in the packet. I have had paste tomatoes and some sweet peppers not be the same shape and flavor described. Totally agree that they've got more choices & I love that they have really odd stuff. Johnny's organic tomatoes have been a bit of a flop for me. I won't order organic seeds anymore. ;-)

      @ “speckled roman” organic is the one that I can remember tonight. They were a really wimpy variety compared to the non organic other varieties I have. The plants barely even made it through the seedling stage. Have to baby them a lot. The tomatoes are AMAZING, but not near as productive as other varieties.
