Handsome Lady Records Club - Malibu '66
Handsome Lady Records Club sings their song "Malibu '66" out of the back of a... 1966 Chevelle Malibu in Minneapolis, MN. Special thanks to Motorpsycho Dan Rodriguez and the original Hot Boys. This video features footage from the day we wrote the tune:
We sat outside with the guys, smoking and drinking beer, flanked by Texas’ van on the right and the Malibu ‘66 on the left. We were singing our songs for the bearded men, most of whom were musicians. Handsome Bill started picking out a little lick on this resonator guitar Dan had left in his apartment. It was like a piedmont blues, but, you know, white. English white. Bill started singing, “...driving in his Malibu…”

"The fire in the pot-bellied stove kept going out. The three of us were inexperienced coal fire-tenders and we kept smothering the flames. That was the impetus for Coalfire, our post-apocaplyptic love song to the entire human race." The Handsome Ladies had cloistered themselves in a small cottage they borrowed from an old couple on the Devonshire seaside in England. It was Channel cold: rainy, ...

Friend Zone? Really? Oh well, you still sound fantastic.
I'm glad you picked a great microphone (large condenser, Neumann maybe?) love it, because it sounds fantastic here on all McIntosh system. Love this voice of Danica, never stop.
This was one of the first songs and videos of y'all's that I saw and heard about 5 or 6 years ago.. 🎶😌🎶❣️👍
Tangled Up In Blue WRITTEN BY: BOB DYLAN Early one mornin’ the sun was shinin’ I was layin’ in bed Wond’rin’ if she’d changed at all If her hair was still red Her folks they said our lives together Sure was gonna be rough They never did like Mama’s homemade dress Papa’s bankbook wasn’t big enough And I was standin’ on the side of the road Rain fallin’ on my shoes Heading out for the East Coast Lord knows I’ve paid some dues gettin’ through Tangled up in blue She was married when we first met Soon to be divorced I helped her out of a jam, I guess But I used a little too much force We drove that car as far as we could Abandoned it out West Split up on a dark sad night Both agreeing it was best She turned around to look at me As I was walkin’ away I heard her say over my shoulder “We’ll meet again someday on the avenue” Tangled up in blue I had a job in the great north woods Working as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the ax just fell So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I happened to be employed Workin’ for a while on a fishin’ boat Right outside of Delacroix But all the while I was alone The past was close behind I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew Tangled up in blue She was workin’ in a topless place And I stopped in for a beer I just kept lookin’ at the side of her face In the spotlight so clear And later on as the crowd thinned out I’s just about to do the same She was standing there in back of my chair Said to me, “Don’t I know your name?” I muttered somethin’ underneath my breath She studied the lines on my face I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe Tangled up in blue She lit a burner on the stove And offered me a pipe “I thought you’d never say hello,” she said “You look like the silent type” Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me Written by an Italian poet From the thirteenth century And every one of them words rang true And glowed like burnin’ coal Pourin’ off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you Tangled up in blue I lived with them on Montague Street In a basement down the stairs There was music in the cafés at night And revolution in the air Then he started into dealing with slaves And something inside of him died She had to sell everything she owned And froze up inside And when finally the bottom fell out I became withdrawn The only thing I knew how to do Was to keep on keepin’ on like a bird that flew Tangled up in blue So now I’m goin’ back again I got to get to her somehow All the people we used to know They’re an illusion to me now Some are mathematicians Some are carpenters’ wives Don’t know how it all got started I don’t know what they’re doin’ with their lives But me, I’m still on the road Headin’ for another joint We always did feel the same We just saw it from a different point of view Tangled up in blue
this brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful.
Woke up with this song in my head out of nowhere
nice one warren...
Beautiful
Note to tourists and locals alike. If you wander down court street on a nice sunny day or a moonless night , keep a sharp ear and you just might here jake and deep creek playing in one of the local establishments.
I keep coming back to listen again and again. What a performance!
Love this so much!
Better than the original
How the hell am I the only comment in 10 years. This cover is amazing!
luverly.
Sublime. Beautiful. Perfection!
Outstanding
What beautiful duo. 💖
pity the voice arrangement beautiful
This man is so underrated it hurts
🤫
This song is simply beautiful. I first saw you two at Unity Temple several years ago and have been a fan ever since.
Inspired.
You’re the only artist who’s truly communicated the melancholy of this song - better than Dylan himself.
Cool cover. You’re good. I bought a guitar because of this version and the RTR version. I like playing both. I saw Dylan in 81 in New Orleans as a kid. I actually fish in Delacroix which is nearby. Oddly enough, he didn’t play this. I saw him there again this spring 41 years later. Still didn’t play it! LOL
How come I've never heard this masterpiece? `
Lov3thishow do I get h3 instrumental of thi# beautifull song .is it old or vey ne. M.p. Love it
Love it!! Like fresh spring water!
Love it, Martha!
Is this an original song? From what I gather it is. I absolutely love this, I just spent an hour figuring out how to play and sing along.
It is an original from the first Owen Beverly solo album, Shooting the Bull.
This is so good
Gorgeous! You two both sound absolutely wonderful! Owen Beverly's channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCdY-rRaW-Ycz0y2HyqJmfLQ Frances Cone's channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCeBAst7RoS5TfOk9yFQc5TQ
Jake Hill is Plymouth's version of Harlan Howard or Tom T Hall. The gravel in his voice feels like home, like walking barefoot to the old house or standing on the beach to remember.
That's wonderful. I like it when people make the effort and do a tasteful cover with a new arrangement. Very well done.
Ah, that means a lot, Paul. Thanks!
Very welcome. I did a cover of this myself some time ago, so I guess that's why it came up on my RUclips feed. Maybe check this out? ruclips.net/video/WKzpwQXNrhc/видео.html Thanks
Its a crime the amount of views this jaw dropping beautiful performance has. Hopefully it gets discovered by the masses so these guys can get the cred they deserve. Its kind of one of the best songs ever really. Fight me and F u Navi!
lyrics I know you think I look handsome in my hospital shirt I got this tube in my arm but I swear it don't hurt If they send me more flowers I'm 'a lose my cool I may be bone-rail skinny but I ain't no fool Well maybe love will never bring you what you wanted it to I keep on looking in the mirror for a clearer view I got a hand full of nothing that I'm throwing at the world And it's a Hail Mary pass, its the hardest I've hurled In a high speed chase I am a getaway car And like the Sundance Kid I always push it too far I'll turn the tables on these bastards in the blink of an eye I may be stuck in this bed but I'm a stand-up guy It don't get me down, stop your crying won't you mama 'Cause you know, I'm gonna be around And you know nothing's gonna happen to me 'Cause there's never been a sun that ever faded down on the streets of L.A. I'm not going to be the one, so so sick of this town anyway Well this medicine's a bitch, it ain't no walk in the park Hell, any more of this stuff I'll probably glow in the dark You better move that wheel chair, I'm walking down this hall If I have strength enough to stand, I have strength enough to fall Every nerve in my body feels pale and cold I used to fight to stay young, now I'm fighting to grow old And I know your heart is heavy, 'cause it's you that I'm needing I know, its hard to soldier though love when you're already bleeding I'm an ace in the pocket of this devilish game I'm the sound of the traffic and the nights full of pain And like a bruised-up welterweight fighting like hell I'm gonna take your best punches and be standing at the bell I know you think I look handsome in my hospital shirt.
Thanks!!!
