Given that only few seconds are allowed for an answer, there is no way anyone would figure this out within that little time provided. Had to come here to say this is a bad question. You cannot "reasonably assume" the gray is transparently placed on the pattern. The logic of option a having the gray completely overlay is consistent with every other piece. For C to be only correct you'd have to have another transparant overlay in row 1 or 2
