Where I’m confused is how to guess the distance of 20 meters or the distance between your fingers to do the multiplying. Or the left eye/right eye distance that is multiplied but ten. I’m assuming the farther away-the closer your eye distance measurement gets smaller. How to know ??

The technique works only when your target is of known size. Same as rifle scope and binocular stadia. So, in this example, if you have no idea of the size of the tree you can't estimate the focal plane change distance. The method does work quite well for snipers (when a laser range finder is not usable) as it's pretty easy to gauge the size of an adult human target.

Parallax is also used to measure celestial distances to visible objects. Imagine the Earth at 180-degrees on the other side of its orbit around the Sun (ie measurements taken about 6 months apart) with a telescope. The shift due to the parallax effect is capable of being used to accurately calculate the distance.

I bet you don't know but the "rule of thumb" has an interisting origin. In ancient England it was legal for a man to beat his wife with a stick so long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb !!!. Fortunatly the law has been repealed.

  • @johncheetham4607

Never used rule of thumb, but interesting to find out where the saying came from. I use it measuring steel or anything. Use feet. X1 foot =12 inches. My feet are just over 11" so to measure and a rough measurement boot measurements. Yard is a stride.

@@yyyalbert I've been using a Bushnell Kilo 1220 for >3 years. I don't think it's made anymore. It has a range of up to 1600 yards (advertised) 4x20mm optics. Most are around $100-$200. They've come down in price since I bought mine. There are a few for less than $100 on Amazon that carry a 5-star review. Depends upon how much trust you put into the reviews. They are all about the same when you compare by range of target acquisition and optics. Can't compare a 600yd range scope with a 1600 range scope. There's a $500 / 600yd range finder and a $150 / 1000 yd range fineder. So you can't compare based upon prices. My guess is the optics of the $500 one is superior to others. Most are geared toward hunters; some are geared toward golfers. It really doesn't matter what you use it for.

If you want to get it exact you have to do a little measuring ( arm length and pupils to eachother ) and then you get the write multiplayer . ( x9,8 or x10,1) But I think x10 is a good Allrounder and easy to multiply so I would go with x10
