I actually own a lap harp, or better known as a zither. I actually tuned it to many different keys, g included. With the lowest string being g. I guess if you tune your lowest string to a certain pitch, tune the rest of the strings according, you can have your lap harp tuned to any key you want. I also experimented with the key of d. With my low g-string turned into a low d string. I guess if you want, tune your lowest string to whatever you want it to be tuned, and then tune the rest of the strings according. I guess g is a suggested tuning. Not just the factory tuning on a tuning card. You could also tune your lowest string to g, and tune your other strings to other notes that have the relative tonality of g. Or if your lowest string is , d, you can tune to g major and have three lower notes to work with. That is exactly what I do. As of now, my lap harp is set in the key of d. One thing I like to think about, if a lap harp suggests tuning to the key of g major with the lowest string being g, the lowest tuning that it can hold well, is actually a perfect fourth lower than g. D. TuneIn a perfect fourth lower actually works better on lap harps that are made to be in the key of g. the interesting thing about it, you can still tune to g on a lap harp made in the key of g, but still have three lower notes from d to f sharp, and then your fourth string becomes g. If you're reading music off of a song card, but you want to play it in the key of d, just read the notes, and just transpose a perfect fourth lower. Then you can actually still play it on a key of g lap harp, but it is tuned a perfect fourth lower. Therefore, you are actually playing it in the key of d major. It actually sounds good either way. The other interesting thing is, the lower tuning actually sounds a lot more mellower than the standard g major tuning... .

Get a tuning wrench from an actual music store. They'll be better quality. The more you play, the better the harp should stay in tune

I would not completely agree with piano being all that easy. (This is just my view as a piano and keyboard player of 12 years) While I totally agree with the point of easily getting a good sound, training the right technique from the beginning is very important for playing fast and complex pieces later on. You should bear that in mind when choosing this as your starting instrument :)

I work at a thrift store and Id bought one we had for sale. I really want to know how to play, I just found the shape and sound interesting, watching the video, my harp is definitely a bit out of tune. I have the exact same the chords that are wrapped around each peg, id done violin for maybe 2 1/2 years in 4-7 grade then stopped completely. I’d love to know some insight ❤❤

Even though they're perfection pegs, they're designed to work like wood pegs in that pulling them out slightly loosens them, then pushing them back in tightens them. If you already know about that, then please disregard this bit of my post. lol

I actually have the same issue. In my case I need something like an allen or torx key. Been to the hardware store but couldn't find any size that fits the screws sockets. Soooo, now I'm ready to use your method !!! Cheers!

I bought mine today at goodwill for 8 bucks, just by chance I love instruments didn't what it was 😂😂❤❤I'm so happy it's missing the bottom bottom string ❤. Thank you, maybe this will be the one I master .

Thank you so much. I have one of these harps and also a corded Zither. I am studying with a lady outside of Munich Germany. I can’t find anyone in my region that plays the corded Zither. I did find an elderly German woman who plays the Alpine concert Zither, but that’s a completely different instrument.

I’m an older lady getting back to my music study in detail. It’s a wonderful to see all of these young people and all of the tools you have. I’m so thankful for people like you on RUclips. Let’s just say back in my day instructors were mean, mean, I developed somewhat of a terror of learning music, it’s a new day and I am beginning again. Thank you.

Hi I am looking for someone that can make easy videos to start play lap harp for my two young kids. can you help them please.

This is fantastic and was perfect in what I was looking for. Way back in ancient times 20 years ago I played cello in orchestra at school for four years but other than that was just a drummer. After deciding 35 is as good as time to start writing music bec the last three months just learning proper exercises and technique I can finally get something on sheet music, it’s very hard to articulate and I spent 20 years listening to the Stravinsky-Zappa-Bartok composer gamut so my mind is practically ruined for most people. I’m still developing proper relative pitch as I can essentially sing out melodies and harmonies for a lot from memory but I am having trouble finding the notes on the keyboard sometimes or finding the proper articulation and notation

You need a lip stick tube of, peg dope. Seriously, that will keep your pegs on place. Easy

My wife has the 4-string and 5-string versions. She is a music/orchestra teacher. You could definitely use either one as a cricket bat. Very durable. I thought that the 4-string sounded a bit dead, and it was noticeably heavier than my wooden instrument. She’s happy enough with them for the reasons you have pointed out. They’re great for the classroom environment with teens and preteens milling around.
