Are you listening, 2024 voters?
More proof that Burt Bacharach was the last songwriter capable of composing a "standard."
Great voice, genuine jazz vocalist, real talent for lyric and melodic improvisation; is there anyone better ?
I discovered his version a few years ago and probably listen to it more than any other song in my Spotify playlist. With all respect to the original, which still deserves love, this interpretation draws out an emotive feeling that gives it a richness most covers of any song don’t achieve. I find it deeply moving no matter how many times I listen to it. The vocal styling, tempo, arrangement and impeccable symbiotic relationship between the instruments and voice suit & enhances the lyrics. The message is (sadly) still so very relevant to today’s individual immigrant, no matter their country of origin or where their journey has taken them. For anyone with a heart, for the listener, this makes an immigrant’s experience personal; helping us stop judging, and labeling an entire group of humans as”dangerous,”“threatening,” “them,” or “others.” Elling is brilliant, always nearly flawless in his creative interpretations, vocal skills and musicianship. His is a true “gift.” So grateful (to whomever) that this version is available for anyone to hear. Thank you!
Thank you for this! Kurt fan
There is no way on God's earth that anyone can sing that anywhere near luther
This guy is one of the worst Jazz singers I've ever heard ! Mel Torme, where are you when we need you ?
This is freaking AWESOME AND THE BEST. 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Song feels like an incredible orgasm.
This is the best thing I've heard all day! The creativity on this arrangement is off the chart!
Exquisite.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️
Amazing voice
Laurence Hobgood, Kurt's longtime pianist, is the player here. Elling and Hobgood split in 2013.
😢Hobgood was a brilliant collaborator.
I love many of his and Laurence's arrangements, but not this one, terrible key for Kurt, . Really don't like what he does with this, but love John's guitar playing as always, what a great unsung player. This time they took a great song and butchered it in my opinion. Oh well. That said, these guys were fabulous in concert, saw them at Iron Horse in Northampton Mass, it was a near religious experience. Did stuff like House is Not a Home and Foolish Heart - magnificent.
Fantastisch!
Kurt Elling...I take my hat off to you..Fabulous rendition of Come Fly With Me..When I first heard that number it brought to mind Sinatra( the Late Frank Sinatra who aren't familiar) great backing..Thanks guys..Best Wishes from Robert of Adelaide in South Australia
You GET what they did, here. So much of what's going on in jazz is doing something new with standards and pop tunes. This is such an energized, creative version. If someone doesn't like it, they're expecting Sinatra's version.
have seen him several times at JALC and he never disappoints. Love his voice, his interpretations, the guy is magical.
Mister John Mc Lean, incredible
Brandon Lee, beautiful
Love that Voice.....very distinct. One of my very favorite
Every single I mean every single time ut will be different. Amazing isn’t it. It’s creating. It can nit be the same. Love Jazz. And I thank my ancestors for creating it. We own this. Hallelujah!
going to see him live for the 1st time next week in Toronto, Soooo excited 😄
Beautiful.
When he improvises, it sounds a lot like an rnb singer. I love it.
I would consider this performance a professional and musical force of excellence!
Something is off..surprised......the arrangement...and doesnt he sound a bit flat..least favorite on u tube...nature boy in Australia..that for me sets the bar..
Thank you, Kurt and Lawrence.
To see Mr. Kurt Elling live is on my bucket list. He is one of my all time favorites. He travels constantly, but I know I will hear him on some stage in the near future.
Bellissimo brano con uno stupendo solo del chitarrista..
Well, this is so heartfelt. I get it Kurt, simply beautiful, so playful with bending the notes. I love the 5/4 rhythm.
I love Kurt Elling's voice so much, could hear this song 24/7 !! I nearly play him every day....and I feel great !!! Hopefully he comes to Vienna/Austria 🇦🇹!!!!
Brilliant as always, love his voice and interpretation so much !!
I just saw him in Seattle on January 31st at the Triple Door. He does NOT disappoint. Great voice and also with Charlie Hunter! Such a great night for me...
Excellent!!👍👏💜
My favorite Elling tune.. amazing performance!!!
...
Silly to judge a jazz artist by a singular performance. Musicians, especially jazz/improvisational are effected by moods, physical energy, audience energy, room acoustics, band, etc…If the vibe is good you can experience an elevation in group energy and individual creative risk taking. You may even hear some “magic” as risk taking starts to inspire both the group and audience. But…it’s never the same and that’s the beauty of jazz and improvisational music. If you want perfect or the same performance every time, play a recording at home. Live jazz is (or should be) about taking risk. But, also consider when you take
OMG I’m in love with that voice.
Lt. Kaufee- thank you for in introducing me to this way back!
Love
Great Kurt Elling! And a great pianist ! Wonderful!
this is sending purists apoplectic! It's too far from the melody. Kurt, what were you thinking!
Ha ha!
Kurt Elling’s ability to deliver an amazing story via his voice & inflections is stellar….resulting in my intense respect for his presentation of this composition…An “American Tune.” BRAVO KURT…ANOTHER INCREDIBLE MUSICIAN & STRONGLY INFLUENCED BY CHICAGO’S JAZZ MASTERS. DOOMO ARIGATO GOZIAMATSU ‼️‼️
Incomparable!
Talented backing band for sure. All they need is a SINGER!!!! What was it open mike night.
You can't even spell.
<3
AMAZEING PIPES !~!!!!
What a beautiful and thoughtful rendition of that song! Kurt Elling is masterful with his vocal interpretation of this song and everything else he sings. He has complete command of his “instrument” and this just blew me away. The band members are all virtuosos in their own right.... just WOW !!!
MCLEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! soo good....
