If you’re relatively new to drawing graphite is a good place to start! in college classes i’ve taught I start with graphite contour (like the pomegranate video w/ pencil), then i teach cross contour, and then i introduce crosshatching and pen. that’s a good progression to try.

That’s a good point, I happened to make my lines pretty dark over all so that’s prob why. Try having your contour lines a bit lighter in the hand but keep them getting gradually darker as they recede into crevices, and around the hand. then add the hand lines and see if that works better for you 👍

If you make a dark outline all the way around an object it will flatten it (think like a cartoon outline that has no variation); instead what you want to try to do if you want it to be more realistic is to have variations in the weight/how dark your line is. Generally with an object like this if you darken the underside of the pomegranate it will look more realistic (kind of calls up the shadow that would be under the object)

I agree with you that there’s prob a better way for me to show an object and shading, and how to analyze the object. I’ll see how i can incorporate this into future videos!

I used a combination of measuring and eyeballing, and looking at stuff like relationships and negative space. For something like this, taking a couple of proportion measurements is helpful. Lmk if this is an unfamiliar concept and I will work it into one of my next tutorials. Thank you for watching.

Try looser and more fluid lines, this will make it more gestural. To make your drawing more 3d, try cross contour but if you want to go beyond cross contour you can add crosshatching and build up value/contrast (check out my crosshatching videos on this). for gestural hands - see this video ruclips.net/video/Kj3MvLHeyhc/видео.htmlsi=IgsMMH9aw-OpglFD on this video the 2nd point is how to make it more gestural. hope this helps 👍

@debkarpmanartist well yeah but how would you make it look less flat without additional hatching or cross contour, the hand in the video looks as if it lacks bone structure underneath

try making your angles a little sharper/more angular in your initial sketch

I think i like the right side more, but it's more about personal taste since the colors feel more vibrant with the touch of the secondary colors. But the left side look just as great, it was really a choice of preference. I also think the right side wouldn't look as good if you didn't do the work with primary colors before adding the secondary colors as a finalization. Great video! Learned a lot with it!
