    Do you believe the stated volume is fairly accurate? I purchased the Osprey Aether pro 70L and had one look inside it and realised there's no way I'd fit all my winter gear in there. I'm coming from an old Lowe Alpine Cerro Torre 65:85 which is huge inside, bit on the heavy side though @ 2.8kg.

    • @Outdoorswithnat
      @Outdoorswithnat Год назад

      Great question: In this case yes I think it is. Some brands (osprey) seem to calculate the volume by tallying up every pocket internal and external, waist etc.. but you can’t figure this out until you see it in person. Occasionally I have seen it as 60+5 or 70+10 indicating internal then extra pockets.

    Great video. I have a backpack with the flaky material and it's got this sticky residue inside. After scraping and heating, it still feels sticky. What is the next step? Do I wash the backpack in soapy water, sprinkle baby powder, or spray rubbing alcohol? Thanks

    • @Outdoorswithnat
      @Outdoorswithnat Год назад

      Hi @kat-zl1rc I’m not entirely sure but I think you are on the right track and I have had the same problem with different lining products. If you can live with the residue being sticky as it’s not flaking off. Otherwise Start with a wash, then if it’s still sticky try baby powder or just some dusty soil/dirt, leave in a sunny dry and well ventilated spot for a couple of weeks and it might get less sticky. Finally some products like silicone seams have a sticky feeling but nothing actually attaches to the surface which I think is due to the microscopic texture of the surface and the final hardness of the cured product causing more friction.

    • @Kat-zl1rc

      @@Outdoorswithnat Thanks! I did some of these steps backwards. I dusted the backpack interior with lots of baking soda, scrubbed the inside especially the corners, and then vacuumed out as much of the baking soda I could. I used hot water and dawn dish detergent to wash the bag and air dried in the hot sun. No sticky residue! I am so happy! Thanks again for your wonderful video and reply

    • @Outdoorswithnat
      @Outdoorswithnat Год назад

      Hi @tashbrooks it has done well so far… but I have also looked after it. I only use it with a tent, bivy bag, or ground sheet. I think it is quite resistant to abrasion and not very resistant to puncture or sharp objects. I.e if you are going to put a hole in your tent from the ground up then you will also put a hole in the mat if that is not a concern then it will be fine. It is quite cold to sleep on and I often use a chest to hip section of closed cell foam to make it warmer (also used as a sit pad).

    I didn't know you could "melt" the flaking layer back into the fabric. Is that for all waterproof linings? I have an old Gregory backpack that has a bit of the same issue. Thanks for your cool tutorial on restoring a nice bag!

    • @Outdoorswithnat
      @Outdoorswithnat Год назад

      Thanks for the support. The ‘waterproof’ liner is typically made of polyurethane. It is essentially plastic but spread very thin so it uses the fabric to hold it in a single continuous layer making the bag waterproof. By melting it back in you are stopping the flaking but also making it not waterproof, but if it was flaking it was not waterproof anymore anyway. So then you are not getting flakes of plastic everywhere.

    I've had mine for over ten years, having used it on cycling tours throughout the UK, Europe and Australia. It is an excellent tent overall though a bit on the heavy side (the older model is, anyway). The thing you do have to be careful of is to ensure all of the pole segments are thoroughly connected in their sleeves while threading the poles through. I had a pole sleeve sheer through in Orkney and had to remove it, impacting the height of the front of the tent. I had trouble getting a replacement part that would fit properly (apparently they're not all exactly the same) so purchased a whole new pole, which is going well. Just something to be aware of.

    • @Outdoorswithnat
      @Outdoorswithnat Год назад

      Thanks for the comment. Yes bees wax has a higher melting point than bees wax, but the molecular structure of bees wax allows it to bend and absorb shear forces. In this way it feels like it can be partially melted at a lower temperature even though it is technically a solid. The diagram linked shows the shear forces with different compositions of beeswax and paraffin wax. www.researchgate.net/figure/Composition-linked-to-mechanical-properties-of-beeswax-associated-with-orange-box-and_fig5_349597980
