SHOWTIME: Little Shop of Horrors interview with Joshua Balbin and Remi Schauder
Little Shop of Horrors is a delectable sci-fi horror musical featuring an electrifying 1960s pop/rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.
The story follows Seymour Krelborn, a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop, who discovers a strange plant he names "Audrey II" after his crush at the shop. Little does he know, this unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a potty mouth, and an unquenchable thirst for human blood.
As Audrey II grows bigger and meaner, the carnivorous plant promises Seymour limitless fame and fortune in exchange for a fresh supply of blood. Just when it’s too late, Seymour learns of Audrey II’s extraterrestrial origins and its true drive for world domina...

Disappointed to see you platforming a company and production that has whitewashed all the Black roles in Little Shop of Horrors.
Thank you for sharing your concerns Saskia. I understand the sensitivity around this issue. However, this production is run by a minority community who seem to me to have thoughtfully reimagined the show with the support of the original authors agents as well as the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. Having spoken with the group at length before deciding to support and promote their production I have been convinced that they genuinely value diversity and inclusion, from the unique perspective of their community’s experience of trauma and persecution.

Extremely disappointed in the show left after first act. It was to camped up and neither lead were suitable. Accents were a joke. Out of your league here boys.
The problem with community theatre speaking from many years of experience is that it tends to get cliquey and favortism is prevelant on certain groups they will often give priority in casting certain people in roles (main ones in particular). They often have a pecking order and single out people at the bottom. I have been in my fair share of groups like these. Another problem with community theatre is while there are some friendly groups, these ones tend to be of lower standard and the quality of their shows tend to be not as high. I am speaking this from experience

When did you list watch a live theatre show? What's the next show you are planning to see?
It's been a while since COVID started but we go every year around february to my aunts group!
December 2019. My wife and I got to see Elf the Musical and It's a Wonderful Life at two different local theaters: archives.cdctheatre.org/its-a-wonderful-life.html (yes, we're a 30-minute train ride from Broadway but we love the convenience, intimacy, and rich talent from local theater!)
This video was recorded before the February 2021 Stage 4 COVID restrictions in Melbourne & Regional Victoria. I close the video with the line "Hopefully I will see you in the theatre soon". Unfortunately that will not be quite as soon as I had hoped when I recorded the video, but hopefully it won't be too long. Stay safe!
