Good advice in general...but know your limits. I'm a woman, will be 60 on the 14th of November. When I was young, I did a massive amount of heavy work, and did things like hiking up mountains... I live in Idaho, so hunting, camping, and fishing at mountain lakes was my entertainment. I had to bust wood with a heavy maul both for my home, and for the family store where I worked. Of course, prior to that, I had to help unload wood and stack it. I helped unload freight trucks on a daily basis, heavy pieces of furniture, like solid oak trestle tables, appliances, like chest freezers, other furniture items, like king size mattresses. And Flooring. Boxes of ceramic, laminate, vinyl and wood tiles and planks. Twelve foot rolls of vinyl and carpet...some with 175 feet on the roll...and HEAVY. It was a chore to get them off the truck. And I helped the installers get their cuts and load those rolls onto their pick up trucks. I'm 5 foot 3 inches tall. Most of the installers were closer to 6 feet tall. So, guess where all the weight goes when I had a heavy piece of 12 foot goods up on my shoulder and at the other end is someone much taller than me. Anyway... my back was destroyed by the time I was in my mid 30s. I pushed my body Too Much. I wish I knew then what I know now. 1. If you are a petite woman...get a man to do the heavy lifting for you. 2. Just because you can...doesn't mean you should. I've had one back surgery, and fourteen years later the disc above it went...plus it seized up my right calf so hard, it shredded my Achilles tendon. I spent 4 months in a wheelchair and couldn't go back to work after that do to all the back pain and scaring inside my calf muscle from when the tendon let go and turned my calf muscle into hamburger, even tearing it from the bone. I Did Push myself when I was younger...but was too young and dumb to know the difference between my limits and abusing my body. At age 60, I'm in pain most of the time and can barely get up the 2 steps into my home. A far cry from walking up and down steep deer tracks in the mountains. I use to be able to throw a 50 pound bag of dog food over my shoulder go up 5 steps and take it into the house to the utility room and not even grunt. I shake now, in trying to lift a gallon of milk...the motion goes straight to my back and causes pain. Again, do things to be strong, push your boundaries, but understand the consequences if you push too much.
