Ask Jerry Tachoir Season 3 Ep 26 - Logistics
I don't even play marching band why am I watching this?
Good job, Roger! This method is virtually identical to how I always installed and tuned our drums. The main difference was just how high to take the top head and how much, if any, muffling. My preference was to end similar to where Roger did in this video and use as little muffling as possible. Lee and Frankie liked lower. Most other corps went higher. Not in this vid is gut tuning which is another entire video on its own. Kevin Namaky Glassmen 96-01 member Glassmen 01-02 staff Magic 03 staff

MY TECH AND INDOOR DIRECTOR PLAGS VIBES IN THIS😁
When tuning drums, I never hear the overtones and I'm not sure why 😭
What app is he using?
Tonal Energy
This sounds more BD 1995, not sure the boxy sound of bluecoats these days
Fingerblasters Drum and Bugle Crops
The signature pulling the hair behind the ears he used to do… just letting the mane hang forward. Haha. Go Roger go. “Jesus” still has his hair…
way too much being technical on the tuning to notes, works good for a drum kit but not for out door shows. just my opinion, your video is very very good!!! im just being picky...lol cheers!
Love his teaching style and how meticulous he is.
Checking my ears: no difference in pitch across the resonant head? Both heads at same pitch?
Agreed, that drum sounds fantastic. 🎉 Annnnddd holy smokes at the end 🤩🤯
One of the snares is my drum line tech and he was a alumni at my school
I want one of these... But $1500 is too much for my blood 😮. Just wondering what they do with the ones after each seson???
You can usually Google "Drum Corps Name used equipment / gear" by September and some will have a spreadsheet selling their stuff from the most recent season. Phantom Regiment and Bluecoats I can confirm do this (we've purchased stuff from them before!)
Sell them to schools
I pretty sure Sean Vega showed Rodger a thing or two about tenors. They march BD back in the day. So hes doing fine...😊
What specific Evans heads are being used? Great video.
Evans TCX. I believe he says it at 0:25 and that's what Bluecoats (Carter's corps) used this summer.
@@SilverBordered thank you
Just casually knocks vortex out like it’s nothing 😂 👌
I push on my heads because there is oil between the heads, so I want an even distribution of oil in the head. Specifically at 1:03 where he talks about pushing, I was taught and teach to push down gently to evenly distribute the oil within the head. If you don't evenly distribute the oil, the head could possibly not last as long or create a more lush sound, as the non-oiled parts of the head would restrict the sound coming from the head. Hope this helps to anyone who was confused by what he said.
There are no oil filled marching heads made by Remo or Evans. It’s a prismatic illusion created by the dual ply. Oil filled heads are called hydraulic.
TCX heads do not have oil in them
Oil is only found in the Evans hydraulic. Air pockets between the head plies can look like oil, so a lot of people have assumed they are oil over the years. A lot of silly wives tales in the marching community.
@@Rstoneburner100 My bad, I use EC2S which do have oil in them
Wait I'm slow
Always good to see and hear other people's approach and philosophies! 👏🏾👏🏾 Good stuff Tama & Roger!
Sounds good!
I wish he actually played them
The precrimping was done way back when heads were set in glue. It was meant to sort of flex the head to test its durability because 50% of heads would pull out of the glue. Now, all heads are "crimplocked" in metal and there's really no reason to do that. Wish you would have finger tightned the heads before you start with the key (not bad for a snare drummer lol). I'd really like to see a tenor tuning tutorial done by Rennick's SCV staff. They really know how to do it.
Just letting the key spin until it stops is the same as finger tight it’s just faster with the key
Quad and bass video next?
Nice Roge
I put new heads on our schools Yamaha SFZ 14 in drums and they sound pingy when played. Is this normal? Every video I watch has that nice sound like he is producing in this video. I got the guts level. Do I just need to keep cranking? We kept the bottom heads on it and they’re a year old. Just a little hesitant to crank those up. Suggestions?
Probably not high enough
Bring up the bottom to a c# like in the video evenly also bring the top up high
@@jeromieb038I’ll work on them next time we get the opportunity to tune. Is it normal for it to sound pingy? Right now some of them have a ring to them with the current tension I have on them.
@@codyappell24the bottom should ring, yeah. he’s in a pretty well treated room in the vid so it’s choked out, but if it doesn’t ring it doesn’t project ime
@@Rstoneburner100 alright I’ll call what I’ve got good then. It never sounds dry like all the videos I see when I get done it I g but maybe I just need to hear it from a distance.
It take me like 2 weeks to have ny bottom heads sounding good. I use Remo Falams 2. Im curious if Evans bottom heads are built differently to tune up faster without pulling?
imo the mx5 does tune into place a lot easier than the falams. pretty sure they have the same tech, but the evans seems like a different weave pattern that’s more forgiving to changes as it seats after you tune it
Remo makes much better heads for the bottom than Falams. Use a black or white max if you just want to use Remo. I haven't used Falam bottoms in almost 30 years. Evans has some synthetic heads that are great also. CHEERS Ondraus Cissell Former Drum Tech Phantom Regiment and Marty Hurley
It's much easier to bring up a newer drum
@@OndrausCissell black or white max as a bottom head?
"Pulling" is not a drum term bud.
Tama makes Freaking beautiful drums
I didn't realize marching snares had advanced this much since I marched. I learned my "diaper" techniques from Roger years ago but these have them built in
bass tuning guide please?
Most difficult part of bass drums is muffling the heads (I have a poorly-made video about it). Once they're muffled, tune the heads to themselves and to their counterparts on the same drums. After that, there are a few options for tuning between the drums: 1. Perfect 4th intervals between all drums. Nice crunchy sound on unisons and very clear spreads for splits. 2. Major triad between the top 3, then bass 4 a perfect 4th below, and bass 5 a perfect 5th below that. This is my favorite. Resonant, reinforced unisons with smooth splits. 3. Same as 2, but with a minor triad on top instead
Wish he did the snares. He didn't really go over that you should probably find a right tone with each snare strain.
This is a very educational video not only for concertist but also drummers who struggle getting the snare tension right! Thanks for sharing!
Now do the bass drums❤
No more lithium grease needed with these drums for longevity and ease of tuning later?
I would put some on just to be safe tbh
Yea, not sure why that wasn’t mentioned
@@jc_calhoun It's an oversight for sure, but I understand how it happened. Brand new drums usually come greased out of the box (in my experience with our equipment, Pearl).
Noone told you to mess with Lithium Grease. Longevity now that's a new term I haven't heard yet in use.
@@tripledeluxedday what??
They’re putting bottom heads on concert toms? Innovative! 😂
Will this work with heads that have been cranked already but you re tune them like starting from scratch again but not with new heads?
The heads that come with the drum are “stock heads” it will work to retune them, but they’re much worse/cheaper sounding. I’d recommend doing research to figure out which new heads to get for your drums, they usually sit around 15-20$. Especially the bottom head, you don’t want a plastic head for nowadays sound.
@@isaacbarton5432 yeah cause I have already changed my heads so I have evans rn so idk if it’ll work
Vortex as the cherry on top 🔥 🔥
Sure wish I had this video when I was marching tenors back in the late 80's! Especially the part towards the end with setting the tone spacing between drums. Thanks, Roger, you're a legend and I'm glad you're putting the same effort into teaching the next generation that you put into developing your own skill.
I spent a lot of time tuning my high school’s drums way back in the day, but I still learned new things about the snare side tuning in this video. Also, modern marching snare construction is SO MUCH better than back in the 1980’s, which was just lugs in shell. I love the dual-rim top and the bottom rim connecting up to the top (mid?) rim. I see Roger also did a tenor video-on to that next!
I thought you just cranked on em till it was like playing on a formica table top, no? For maximum speed and projection? Sounds great, btw. Tone for days.
Sometimes cranking heads immediately put a lot of stress on the heads causing them to stretch too much. If they start uncontrollable stretching it might lead to a damaged head
You don't want to tune to MAX PSI because you won't have tone where air is getting to the bottom head from the batter head to let the snares vibrate . CHEERS
@@OndrausCissellright, especially with the kevlar snare sides
