Mamiya Six Automat - Seikosha shutter disassembly and cleaning
Mamiya 6 Automat is a nice folding medium format camera that can be easily obtained from Japan online. Most models suffer from glass imperfections due to the island's climate, but even if the glass is great, it is almost certain that the shutter speeds will be off.
Here, I show you the basic steps of shutter disassembly and reassembly.
I am using 100% isopropanol and acetone as solvents. You can use isopropanol and naphtha. If you use acetone, you WILL need to lubricate all the critical surfaces, because it is much stronger than naphtha and will remove any finish.
For lubrication, I use high molybdenum grease, although there are better products.

Stereo slide film processing: scanning and mounting
Просмотров 370Год назад
I show here how I scan my stereo slide film from Wollensak Model 10 camera. Then I show how to cut and mount the slides into masks for stereo viewing. I use EMDE aluminum masks, which are about $0.50 each if bought in bulk. Then I use cardboard foldover to stiffen the aluminum mask. The cardboard is taped on the top. such slide is ready for viewing in a dedicated stereo slide viewer, such as Ko...
Wollensak Stereo Camera - film loading to prevent overlapping frames
Просмотров 242Год назад
This is an important technique that was covere in a book about Revere 33, the cheaper version of Wollensak camera. Cutting a long leader will prevent overlapping frames in the beginning of your film. You should still get around 29 stereo shots. Soon I will show how to process the developed film into stereograms and stereo slides. Check my other videos on Wollensak stereo camera.
Mamiya Press & Super 23 - Rangefinder adjustment with comparison

Comparison of the rangefinder systems of Mamiya Press 6x9 and two different Mamiya Super 23 models (similar to Mamiya Universal Press). You can see how to open the top cover and adjust the rangefinder on each Mamiya. Hope it's helpful.
Wollensak Stereo Film Camera Repair - cleaning the rangefinder (top plate disassembly)
Просмотров 2092 года назад
In this shorter video I show how to disassemble the top plate on Model 10 Wollensak stereo camera. Then I show cleaning of the optical elements, as well as the old grease of friction points and lubrication. This is something you should do on top of the CLA of the shutter. The special tools in this videos are Bristol spline wrenches. You need only two, 0.076 inch 4-spline and 0.048 inch 4-spline...
Wollensak Model 10 Stereo 3D Camera Repair step by step - Shutter CLA
Просмотров 3312 года назад
After searching in vain for any info on this particular camera, Wollensak Stereo (deemed to be the best stereo camera out there), I have obtained Jess Powell's video tape, many thanks to David C. Glick. Jess used to charge about $80 for his tape. He talks a lot about rangefinder and film counter, which is useful. Alas, he completely dismissed shutter repair and provided bad advice regarding tha...
Well explained, thank you! Very useful video.
Hi great video. I'm just abut to start work on a Mamiya Six automat so your video will certainly come in handy. How can I get the free service manual you mentioned. Tks.
Great repair video! Very thorough. I was hoping to see what you were going to use to reglue the leather at the end of the job. Can you explain or suggest what would be the appropriate type of glue to use for that purpose on these cameras? Also, I have done some minor repairs on Stereo Realists, which I love and are much easier to work on, and have used electrical contact cleaner to clean shutter mechanisms. I have worked on several Realists that had sticky or slow shutters and have corrected the problem on all of them. Is this something that might work on the Wollensak timing mechanism? I'm about to start working on a Wollensak with a non working shutter after watching your video. Its clean on the outside, but curious to see how dirty it might be on the inside. Thanks for the great video!
Appreciate you doing this ! Always been a dyi type & into stereo photography for years (TDC, Realist, Wollensak, Revere but haven't done much in years, after I moved & packed all my darkroom gear (did color and B&W neg, E6 reversal, b&w, color plus Cibachrome printing) then digital started takin' over, never thought it could be as good as film in the day. The Bristol wrench looks similar to tork L wrenches today but assume it's a different spline type. Gotta check your other videos out, thanks for what you do !
I found that useful. Thank You.
Bonjour quel est la marque de votre scanner diapositives
Bonjour vous êtes français avec un pseudonyme comme le votre?
Would you be able to share the Jess Powell repair video? The frame counter on my Wollensak 10 consistently jams at the end of the roll, and I can't quite tell what exactly it is causing it.
Many thanks for the video. I've got a mamiya super 23 with 100 mm f3.5 sekor. When I focus at some very distant object and turn the lens focus ring I get infinity right - I need to turn all the way left and the infinity mark lines up exactly with the red mark. Regrettably, the closer objects do not focus properly. I've wasted a few films trying to get it right. When I focus across my room I get a camera viewfinder reading 5 m while a laser viewfinder shows 3.7 m. For an even closer object camera viewfinder shows 2.7 m while laser reads only 2 m. How to fix this, please?
Is your lens the collapsible one ?
Yes, it is
Hello! I’m from new york and I recently purchased a mamiya 6 folding with this shutter. I figured it is impossible to repair the shutters on these things, but turns out I am extremely wrong. Your work is magnificent, and these videos are very enjoyable. I want you to know that providing this information to just a single person on the other side of the globe is extremely valuable. Otherwise, there would never be a video record of the shutter repair, and this would be impossible in 20 or 40 years. Thank you for your hard work. Your video is dearly appreciated!
I like your cleanliness and neatness! Do more repairs of photographic equipment and shoot on video, it's interesting!
Wouldn’t be easier to use RBT stereo mounts? They are better than any vintage mounts and cost is similar.
Not exactly. On RBT mounts you still need to set the stereo window, while here it's "preset" more or less. RBT are much more expensive these days, as well. It would have been faster, yes. The alternative is to 3D print RBT mounts.
@@vaisonla-romaine8304 they cost $1 per piece. I wish they were cheaper but the cardboard mounts and masks cost about the same. Setting up the window is easy, no extra equipment is needed. You can’t adjust the window in these masks, so if you don’t cut the film perfectly the window will be off permanently. What’s THE MOST IMPORTANT in my opinion is the fact that stereo mounts are still being produced and we need to support the company that makes them. It’s for our own benefit. If the sales are poor they will cease the production and the cost of supplies will skyrocket. This is exactly what happened with STEREO WORLD medium format stereo mounts and viewers. The mounts went up 3x in price and their excellent lighted viewers that cost $80 brand new went to $500 for the used one (sold on ebay couple years ago, I haven’t seen one for sale since then). So if anyone is trying to save a dime now by buying those old dusty cardboard mounts will have pay a premium for them in the future if RBT goes out of business.
I have hard time to believe that you're not a trained technician or very experienced amateur. It's pretty difficult to reassemble shutter like this one in proper order without loosing any tiny parts. Do you have a background in mechanics?
Thank you. I don't have a background in mechanics. I also have found it improbable to fix it myself a few years ago, but nowadays, when you move parts one at a time with some dexterity and take a lot of pictures in between, it's doable. It's also good to review diagrams of the shutter you are working on, before starting the job. It will give you confidence. Sometimes even if you have your pictures, you can't really see where a certain spring latches etc.
Very useful video. Probably time to shoot some slide film and give this a try.
What a thorough job of disassembly! I've collected six of this model and have been able to bring the shutter speeds into spec by cleaning except for sometimes the 300 sec. Every Wollensak 10 that I've bought had slow shutters at 100 sec and higher, with 50 and slower being more or less in spec. (2 seconds is always about 2.7.) Early on I tried winding stronger torsion springs. This made the slower speeds too fast while not sufficiently correcting the 100, 200 and 300. If you make them really strong they cause the mechanism to flex too much when you cock the shutter and it will jam. The problem was always dirty shutter leaf blades. Dirty blades affect the fast speeds more than the slow speeds because proportionally less time is spent fully open and more time with the blades in contact with each other and moving. I've also cleaned the shutter and upon reassembly found the problem had returned because lubricant migrated back to the shutter blades. I wouldn't lubricate any moving parts anywhere at all near the blades. I think it's especially risky with this particular shutter design. You need to have the fast speeds available so you can open the aperture up to the mid settings which is where the lenses are sharpest. As far as I know the slowest slide film that you can get is ASA 50, which means in full daylight you need 200 sec to be able to open to f8.
Good job on the cleaning! As you mentioned it yourself, old lubricant is almost always an issue with any mechanical shutter, so cleaning just the blades is not enough, because more will migrate. Same with using incorrect lubricants, or too much of them. As with any shutter, lubrication is still necessary, especially with it being so old. I agree that the design is not the greatest ;) The camera is very sharp at f/8 and f/11, which is suggested to be used along with the hyperfocal method of focusing in the old Revere stereo guide. I have used it at f/8-16 almost exclusively and focusing set "a priori" to the hyperfocal distance, I did not miss focus on a single shot :) I shot on box speed of E100, that is ISO 100. The low sensitivity of slide film unfortunately limited its use in the afternoons and evenings. I am actually selling my camera now, with a few accessories. I shot two rolls and it's time to pass it along.
Thanks for this video!! I've just got a Mamiya Universal!
Would this work for a 600se??
Yes
why is your voice so low? its impossible to understand
Do you use rubber cement to glue back the leather?
Pliobond 25
Fantastic tutorial!! Thank you for uploading. Do you work on other stereo cameras?
Thank you. I haven't used any other 3D camera, so never tried. I did restore a few folding cameras and mechanical SLR shutters like Hasselblad or Mamiya.
You can peel off part of top leatherette and adjust rangefinder alignment via the holes where the screws for adjusting.
Yes, it is possible. Fortunately it was not necessary in my case. I try not to peel the leatherette when possible, because it is irreplaceable - no one makes the pattern. It is also worth noting that rangefinder should be adjusted to properly aligned infinity focus on the film plane, which in this camera is not fun...it is stereo after all. I checked it after shutter CLA with a piece of invisible tape and a digital SLR.
Which screw adjusts the horizontal alignment?
Thanks for the video!!!! I have the same camera. I've cla'd the upper viewfinder & rangefinder section of this camera but have not done the shutter assembly yet. This video will be helpful. Many thanks!!!
Thank you, it is nice knowing that someone benefited from this video. I have found out that this camera requires diligent film loading to prevent overlapping frames. I will make a video about it in a bit.
@@vaisonla-romaine8304 I just got done overhauling the shutter on my camera thanks to your video here. It works flawlessly now. Many thanks. You should do other videos for various vintage cameras too. Not many people can do this kind of repair stuff.
